  1. a dogs not stupid if it realises it can get away with this it will continue when the dog returns put it on the lead and give nhim a bit of a rag ie nip his ear ect let him know your the boss next time he goes off the same thing the dog eventually realises that when it runs off it will get into botherL WOODGA  be careful if you punish a dog when it comes back as far as the dog is concerned it is being punished for returning so will be even less likely to come back! patience and time spent away from game training will help, if you use treats then reduce the amount you feed by th
  2. is there any evidence to suggest that any of the supplements commonly available are an improvement on a balenced diet.
  3. thats the silly isles isn't mush? rabbiter if theres no one about to help with the training go to the library and borrow a gundog training book it sounds strange but the advice on retreiving etc will set you in good stead for when the pup is a little older. good luck.
  4. interesting article, shame it hasn't got more info on spaying adult dogs although the little that can be gleamed seems to suggest that later spaying is less harmful as growth would have stopped or very early spaying to equalise the increased bone length. thanks
  5. a border collie hybred should have the intelligence to make an all round rabbit dog, a 3/4 should have the speed for daytime rabbits and still be reasonablr easy to train to ferreting. having said that i persoally don't really like the cross so run a beddy/whippet x greyhound, harder to train but the temperament suits me better.
  6. it would depend on how safe the area is. but ideally you want the dog to come back to you. main thing is don't keep calling / whistling the dog if it knows where you are because that just enforces the knowledge that it can ignore you. keep working on the recall hopefully with a little experiance it will come together as the dog matures and gets used to live game.
  7. there's a difference between agression and guts in the field. most greyhounds have all the guts needed to work and thankfully not to much agression. the right cross should maintain that temperament, agressive dogs are a pain in the butt best left to those that don't know better.
  8. fast and slow twitch fibres: if a dog is born with lots of fast twitch through selective breeding as a greyhound or whippet should be than they use anorobic metabolism, without O2, which means that they produce waste products, such as lactic acid, faster than they can clear them from the muscles but for a short while they are quick. if they have a lot of slow twitch ie a collie then they use aorobic metabolism, with O2, produce less waste products and so can keep the muscles clear and working. a good lamping dog needs a proportion of both for a long nights lamping. the proportion would need to
  9. thats hell of a good looking bitch do her good nice holiday in devon.
  10. i will 2nd that request, would be intrested as although i have heard of the cross its not often seen which seems strange with all the beddy crosses there would seem to be a market for terrier crosses and in theory it sounds very good.
  11. at present i have two dogs an 18 month old 1/4 beddy 3/4greyhound bitch and a 10 month ? 1/8 bull, 1/8 saluki 3/4 greyhound. i started with lurchers got into racing dogs then back to lurchers. i have owned dogs that could course but must admit i prefer one that finds, catches and retrieves whatever is about.
  12. knew of a dog that took muntjak fairly regulary and got hold of a fallow buck once he was ok with sheep but he was exercised near them daily. maybe the daily exposure helps to seperate the two in a dogs mind.
