Welsh is no more compulsory than French or German. If you want a good job in Wales you need to be bilingual. Welsh is not like Gaelic or Cornish where it is only used in some places. Welsh is spoken though out Wales and it is very much a living language. Through choice all of my grandchildren go to Welsh schools the eldest is 18 and she can see the advantage of being bilingual now as it gets her more work. TC Theres even a welsh speaking community in patagonia,always good for kids to be bi-lingual or tri-lingual because it opens up opportunities.

Theres a house maybe 3 miles away,passed it 1000's of times,it looks unusual from the road,made of carved ornate wood like the houseboats in kashmir except this house is on the thames,always wondered its history till today,its in todays Mail,theres an article on it,it was brought from switzerland in 1882 and has just gone on the market complete with parking for 20 cars and moorings for 25 boats at a tidy £13 million quid.

I think any language,however obscure benefits kids,speaking the language of their country has to be a plus surely,i know what you mean about forced education though as i dont believe RE should be compulsory,but languages are a totally different ball game.

I saw some of the supergran locations as a kid,it was filmed at beamish,tynemouth and whitley bay,i always kept an eye out for scunner campbell as a kid,and grannies flying on bikes.The local coppers used to look atbus walking around with our airguns out of the bags shooting starlings in the village for ferret food and just tell us to put them back in the sleeve,nowadays the media would descend upon us like a ton of bricks and make out as if it was a re-enactment of hungerford,times change and not always for the better.

My missus bought me a book last weekend,i just started reading it "The last english poachers" biography about a family from gloucestershire,the Toveys,two of the guys,bob and brian tovey were out with a .410 shooting roosting pheasant one night,they had a lamp with them and squeaked in a big black panther,anyone read the book or know the guys?

I have used taxi's in karachi whose drivers spoke better english than some taxi drivers in London,thats the truth.

Yesterdays daily mail carried a story on the 'Simba of st austell" sighting,a lion that was purportedly sighted in cornwall,un-named "experts" said its most likely a puma,who are these "experts" and what gives them legitimate credentials in the study of anomalous british big cats?Apparently it had bitten a deers head clean off?There was also a black panther spotted hunting deer on Wednesday near Ambleside in the lake district.
