one stillwater i fish for trout is home to a resident population of common carp and whilst the club concerned would have all the carp removed i find them excellent sport on a little five wt rod i have targeted them on and off for a few years now, usually when the trout are nowhere to be seen, and have found that the best method when the water is warm and they are feeding near to the surface is to use a pheasant tail nymph fished maybe a foot or so subsurface, they cannot resist this fly and whilst they seem to avoid all other nymphs and dries i put their way they will take this nymph when

you are fortunate indeed to have access to such a fine chalk stream as the Itchen, i am sure even the free stretches will yeild good fish an absolute boon to any fly fisher who is targeting fish is a good pair of polaroids, these should be viewed as an essential item of tackle i guess that you will not be casting far so a mid action fly rod would be fine some would say go up to a 5#wt but with small flies a 3#wt will be ideal for most rivers choice of flies will depend on what is actually hatching on the water you are fishing, the chalk streams create a rich enviroment for invertab

Maty j hi one quick word of advice concerning chesties from any manufacturer is always wear a wading belt regardless of the depth that you are fishing in sorry if i am stating the obvious here but i have heard of some serious incidents over the years if you trip and fall over then non belted waders will quickly fill with water and will make it a real struggle getting out of the river possibly too much of a strugle in the case of fast flowing water a wading belt will not make the waders totally waterproof from the top if you take a tumble but it will buy you time all the

A word of warning concerning the Lidl waders a mate of mine who's as tight as a Gnats chuff refused to spend a penny on waders and fished exclusivley from the bank when the cheap lidl waders came on offer last year for 12 quid he was in there like a ferret down a warren they lasted for 2 yep 2 trips, the seam went big style when he was mid stream and he took a proper soaking good job it was in the summer and not during the freezing cold winter months as for what was left of the waders Mike is talking of converting them into a pair of Thigh waders (did i mention he was tight

The gent in question is on the Angling Times Cover this week god what a fish if i caught one half that weight i would be a happy bunny the biggest pike i have had was less than a quarter of the weight of Johns fish mind you that was whilst fishing for Trout with a size 10 Gold Ribbed Hares Ear on a 5lb tippet

Allotments are a useful and often overlooked venue for the rat hunter your first port of call should be the alotment itself where you should find contact details for people requesting plots this will usually but not always be the local town council, when you phone them they will probably tell you that they have tried to remove the rats with poison, most will have tried this, but given the nature of the venue (crops etc, tennants bring their kids down) this has proved unpopular with plot holders so long as you can demonstrate that you are a responsible shooter with insurance and are

Mick hi daft question but do you thumb the spool when the lure hits the water setting the drag to any setting whatsoever will have no effect on casting or any subsequent birds nesting of line as the reel will be in free spool when casting, the drag being only effectual when the reel is in gear so long as you place your thumb on the spool when the lure hits the water to prevent the spool from continuing to rotate you should be fine i can think of no other reason for birds nesting than this, but appologise in advance if you think i am trying to teach granny to suck eggs i use

Robson Green caused uproar during the first series for the incredibly poor fish handling there must be many non-anglers out there who think that all anglers handle fish in such an irresponsible and unethical manner trust me this guys programmes (based on the first series at least) are just fuel for the antis fire i wouldnt bother with the second series, i am only surprised there is one if there are poor viewing figures then maybe with any luck it will be axed

Well said Auld Salmon, that pretty much sums it up, before a new angler buys any tackle i would suggest that you view any potential waters that you may be fishing / wish to fish and assess your tackle needs for those waters, buying tackle can be a minefield for a new angler and it can be very easy indeed to recieve conflicting advice and spend your hard earned on totally unsuitable tackle, do you have a friend who fishes the waters that you intend to fish ?, if so i would recommend that you pester him for a day out borrowing some of his tackle and seeing if the water in question is for you

Not true im afraid the rod licence that you buy from the post office for £25.00 covers you for Coarse fish and non migratory Trout only not Salmon you will need to buy the more expensive game rod licence if you wish to fish for either Salmon or Migratory Trout that said if you wish to take up fly fishing i would suggest that you think about the sort of water that you will fish before you commit to buying any tackle a rod suitable for fishing a team of flies on a reservior or large stillwater will be totally unsuitable for a small river or stillwater see if your local water com

True indeed, the somewhat draconian and totally ineffectual handgun legislation brought about 'post Dunblane' has had absolutley no effect on what the government percive as 'gun crime' which has only increased since this lame legislation was introduced, now think about that for a moment, you can no longer buy a handgun, anyone who owned a handgun legally pre ban was obliged to hand it into the authorities, and inspite of this crime with handguns has increased, how much money did the tax payer have to cough up to see this totally useless act passed which doubtless only served as a politicans vo

For the reserviors that i fish it will generally be a Black Pennell during the buzzer hatches or as the Sedges start to appear on the water a Mallard & Claret i have very little success with Dry Flies on Reserviors even when Sedges are being scooped off the top for the rivers and streams that i fish i will generally have more success with a dry fly and from the time that Large Dark Olives appear on the water right through Mayfly time i will either use a Dogsbody or some generic Maylfy immitation switching to Black Gnats near seasons end

Tamworth angler jailed for keeping air rifle
fin and fur replied to charlwood1005's topic in Airgun Hunting
more to the point, does anyone know exactly how powerful the rifle was in the Tamworth case ? if the weapon was described as letal to humans (and whilst i fully accept that a 12 ft/lbs rifle can be letal) i would assume that it wasn't 'over' the limit by just a few ft/lbs i guess its probably true that theres more to this case than we will ever know but such a lengthy jail term would suggest to me that the rifle was very powerful in the accepted sense cheers fin and fur -
never seen a black rabbit in the wild before, but i have seen white rabbits twice happily coexisting with browns

bugging for grayling
fin and fur replied to aaronpigeonplucker's topic in Fresh & Salt Water Fishing
Caught a couple last year and barbecued them bank side with a couple of 12inch browns and ive got to say the trout tasted far better Chess hi what time of year did you eat your grayling ? im guessing that if you ate them with brown trout then it must have been in the summer/autumn when the brownie season was still underway for the best condition grayling you will have to fish for them in winter, when the brown trout are no longer in season, as the grayling will be in their best physical condition at this time of year and will taste their best try one now, they also s -
bugging for grayling
fin and fur replied to aaronpigeonplucker's topic in Fresh & Salt Water Fishing
I also tend to Nymph fish for my Grayling, and have not so far tried the Czech Nymph method the reason for this is that most of the streams / rivers i fish are generally not flowing fast enough to use the Czech Nymph method when in condition and are usually well and truly in spate condition, and therefore unfishable, when the flow would have been fast enough many anglers are under the impression that the Czech Nymph method is only effectual in deep water regardless of flow, when it is the flow rate which is the defining factor for succesful Czech Nymphing, i know of a few anglers who succesf -
A valid point on bankside safety, i also think it is worthwhile making sure that at least one person knows where you are going, and whilst i fully appreciate that fishing for many is best enjoyed as a solitary pursuit please make sure you have your mobile phone with you it could save your life one day

i could well believe that, i think thats probably due to the fact that the pellets are pointed in profile instead of domed in my experience pointed pellets do nothing for accuracy does anyone know (or have any suggestions) why a manufacturer would want to copper coat a pellet ? does it offer some significant improvement in pellet performance ? lead on its own has good anti-frictional properties but is copper superior to lead in this respect ? or is it just a marketing gimmick all the best fin and fur

there are some very, very sick people in this world who need to be deprived of their liberty on a permanent basis i bet when they are caught (which hopefully they will be) they are given a nominal custodial sentance in a nice warm cosy jail somewhere as most of the posts on here have already said this is publicity that non of us need heres to a quick arrest

Sorry mate, Dieseling doesn't happen in the barrel it happens in the piston chamber, but your right about the lube in the empty tin first, that does work, lol, I only use lube on one of my rifles and that's the Gamo Shadow and the difference is quite a lot, Takes mine from 14.5 FPE to over 16.FPE, and has no adverse affects to my accuracy, so if your thinking of using any lube you best make sure you ain't going over to the dark side??? All the best, Rob. are you sure that dieseling cannot also occur in the barrel as well as the air chamber ?, in effect when the air passes in

Generally speaking the EA will readily grant a licence to anyone who shows a willingness to remove the American Signal Crayfish from waters over which it has jurisdiction (thats most waters in England and Walses) however you will have to apply for one and make sure that the crayfish you remove are signals and not the native crayfish which is a protected species and the removal of which is illegal signal crayfish taste great and you will be doing the enviroment a favour at the same time good luck or should that be bon apitit

if you do go down the pellet lube route then be careful not to get pools of the lube forming in the pellets skirt recess as this is when dieseling will occur, you will also find that this does nothing for pellet accuracy i too have used the napier pellet lube and used to drip the lube over the pellets in the tin and put the lid on giving them a good shake this was he cause of some lube getting into the pellets skirts it is best if using such lubes to driop the lube into an empty tin and then add the pellets

Seems an extreme solution to me, is the sole issue that the rifle will not fit in your existing gun bag ? if so then it would be far, far cheaper to get a longer gunbag than to start getting the rifle barrel shortened given all the issues that you may experience in terms of getting the job done correctly and finding that there may well be ballistic changes to the rifle when you get it back if you want it shortening for other purposes then there are many companies who have a raft of experiences regarding customising this very rifle i am thinking of v max etc, a post venom spin off i think t
