  1. Speaking from experience, slow down a bit. Get out and have a look at some guns, make a slow careful decision. You won't go far wrong with a Howa, but do you want the heavy barrel? Are you shooting targets too? Are you shooting more than about 5 rounds quickly at any point with it? If you're saying No to them, then get the light barrel version of whatever you need. You will have a forend-heavy rifle with a moderator on the front (get a T8-AR or P8 Compact, not the full size versions, you get much better balance). And the heavy barrel is very heavy. I know, I had a Howa with laminate th
  2. regarding batteries, I use 10ah normally and tbh it's not really enough for the Lightforce 170. I've been taking a 10 and a 7 with me, but I might get hold of a couple of those Li-Ion 10AH ones, combined they're lighter by about half than a single lead 10AH. Sounds like a plan, although I'd not previously heard of any problems with them.
  3. Can't remember the name of one of the solvents I use. The other is the bore foam, and that works well. You'd be surprised how much can be there when the barrel looks spotless so worth trying a different solvent, leave overnight too. Sako 75 should be shooting sub half inch with the ammo it likes, I had one in 22-250 and if I didn't get a one-hole group I was mighty miffed. Regarding the ammo, you can use 85gr Federal on deer, that's what they're designed for and they work well. Failing that, if you have to go really lightweight, I might be in the market for an accurate 243 fox rifl
  4. I ended up with mentoring on 243, but specifically for deer. The reason given was the processing of the shot deer. They're quite happy for me to use the same rifles to shoot foxes.
  5. I have had several opportunities for shots of that distance when I could see even with cheaper scopes, and some where all I needed was a more contrasty image, so the potential is definitely there for that range of shot. I think 500 is pushing it though as there's no spot where a 500 yard shot has background on any land I shoot on.
  6. Snap, you mentioned the Leupold. I've seen them on various sites which then say that Nightforce are that much better. They're also about £250 more money, if I got the non-IR Leupold. They're also over half a pound lighter. Now, if I was going to shoot thousand yard every day with a 50BMG there seems to be no contest. But I'm not, so from people who've used them, are they up to scratch? I like my VX-III but the eye relief is perhaps a bit long for all uses, takes quite a lot of setting up to get it vaguely right, and it's beaten very soundly by my Schmidt at night.
  7. They don't ship Falcons in from the States, they're English! The Yanks pay a fortune for 'em...
  8. The IOR range is definitely worth a look, Border Barrels' gunsmith is away until Jan but if I haven't spent money by then I will have a chat with him. I did call them though and they are out of stock of the 6-24x50
  9. Still mulling this one big style, but... Zeiss 6-24x56 vs a Nightforce 5.5-22x56. Thoughts? (1300 vs 1000)
  10. yes it would be nice to live somewhere other than here, whenever I go anywhere else, bar London, I end up seeing how much more countryside there is compared to here. Devon/Cornwall or Scotland would do nicely - somewhere where you can have a cannon and fire it pretty much wherever and whenever you like. That'd do nicely.
  11. Tricky one! The most memorable I think was the fox I shot with a 243 in absolutely miserable conditions. I didn't want to leave my shelter to go after him, and he didn't want to leave his bush to run away. I ended up head shooting him at 25 yards (farthest distance I could see more than eyes!), and the resultant mess (58gr vmax), combined with Deker trying find where the hell I was (such was the crappy weather) all added up to quite a memory.
  12. Good going lads I bet that 400 yard one was incredibly satisfying!!
  13. Scotch, thanks for the info. Not come across IOR before but a quick butcher's on Google suggests good things, and that price looks good too. Hmmmmm....
  14. S&B for foxes because of greater clarity, or choice of reticle?
  15. I am toying with the idea of spending a vast sum of money I don't have on a scope I don't need. It will be used to shoot foxes (night) at unfeasibly long ranges, and targets as far as the rifle (243, don't own it yet, I will be changing my rifle) and I can shoot accurately. I was thinking: Nightforce Schmidt Swaro Zeiss or possibly Meopta. If needs be I might be persuaded to spend £1300-odd, but I would like to do it for less because it makes the chances of actually buying the damn thing higher. Right now I don't know exactly what I want, so your experiences are welcome
  16. John that's good going mate Sounds like you had a good workout up and down those hills, especially with that brute of a rifle you've got! What ammo are you using at the mo?
  17. I've swapped my scopes round a bit as I wasn't getting on with the one on the 243, so my 8x56 is on there for now. Out tonight zeroing in my HMR scope, a cheap but effective JSR 6-24x50. Also took the 223 out with me, which has the Leupold 4.5-14x50 on it now. Zeroed in the HMR reasonably quickly, scope seemed mostly OK to zero, hope that continues! Had a quick mooch and saw a fox, which was unexpected - it was the same ground over which I shot 4 last week, and a total of 19 since about March. Foxy toddled off PDQ so I didn't get a shot, but it did make me decide that a wander with the
  18. I found my CZ511 trigger pretty awful really. The trigger on my 10/22 T is pretty good, for a Ruger, and certainly good enough for bunny bashing.
  19. Better than a stock 10/22 I will agree with, but good it ain't.
  20. which CZ have you shot? the trigger is f***ing awful!
  21. Agree on the 223... 243 ammo has gone up now, the expensive stuff starts at £1.20 each, goes up to about £1.50. A bit silly! That said, the 55gr is great on Charlie.
  22. Viper is a passable bit of kit. I'd spend the money on a Falcon 4.5-18x56 though, it's a lot better than my MTC!
  23. I don't know the Deben, but when I had the choice of a rockmount or a harris, gunshop folk said "Go on, tell the difference then". Took me about 5 seconds... My Harris bipods are great (have 3, two long-leg and one 9-13). They're pretty lightweight, reliable and sturdy.
  24. Whisky, please :-) (preferably Templeton Rye)
  25. Quick one, how is a 204 Ruger's muzzle report (moderated) vs say 223 and 243?
