  1. If I were to be changing my 243 and potentially 223 as well, into one rifle to shoot foxes, from up close to far away (magical 400 yard mark), 22-250 and 204 spring to mind as calibres to do that job. 243 is a big loud for everyday use, and 223 a bit wind-affected that far out. 204 and 22-250 look similar for energy downrange, and people say very good things about both. I see the rifle selection for 204 is very limited, and I hear tales that anything other than 39/40 gr bullets are a bit doubtful for Charlie. But, I had a 22-250 before and it can only be described as f***ing loud,
  2. I'm just going down the reloading route, so not rich enough to keep up with 243 for bunnies! Tbh, I'd recently set the scope up, nice to check zero. I figure a rabbit's head at 100+ yards in a gusting crosswind will do That 90gr SP really did knock the deer over, I've not seen anything like it!
  3. Did that come from Wiltshire Rod and Gun by any chance? Looks very similar to the one I had a look at in there Looked in decent condition that one, did you beat Tony down some 1:12 twist IIRC as we had a good look down the bore when I was looking at getting it. Hope it's good fun.
  4. No, they made a big deal over the killing because they wanted to hammer home the point that these people were out there doing it themselves. As for the antis, yes, they are anti! But there were many pro- views as well, and that is why it was balanced. But as Deker says, it was primarily for good TV, and I think they achieved that well.
  5. It's a highland estate in Scotland of 7500 acres. You don't NEED a backstop then - if you can get a 270 bullet 7500 acres away, you're doing bloody well - the guy knows the land, he knows what's there, as it's all private property. if you took a shot on land no-one was alowed on and you killed a trespasser and you came out with that statement you would have a crimmial record for manslauter It's the Scottish Highlands, there is nothing bloody there, but whatever.

  7. Not following you really. It was a well balanced view, there were pro-shooting people from all walks of life, and antis too. Very good indeed.
  8. I would expect they would mentor you again for the deer, specifically for the deer. I have experience of 22CF for fox, so my ticket says 243 and 308 OK on my own for fox, but need a mentor currently for the deer. But with a bit of luck that will change soon, done my time, just need to get it cleared off.
  9. +1 for ASE, but Jet-Z rather than S5. S5 does come loose, at least mine did. Not had a Jet-Z but seen them and tried them for weight and they look a better package to me in every way.
  10. Gotta love League Against Cruel Sports woman - she was very quiet for an activist anti!! The people they had in the video voicing opinion were full of shite though
  11. You guys have seriously missed the point of inviting non-shooting, non-killing people to this programme. We complain often that media coverage is biased against us. The broad inclusion of people gave a very, very balanced view of everything there. Each time there was a difference of views, both viewpoints were clearly communicated to the viewer. I don't give a shit whether people are for or against hunting, what matters is simple - live and let live. I won't make them kill rabbits and eat them, if they will let me do it. The ideas some people there had about how it's barbaric to en
  12. Wikipedia never lies: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.50BMG (well OK, sometimes it does, but not this time!)
  13. Then you would like a .22 WMR It kills foxes better than HMR, and it does the job on rabbits too.
  14. There's no such thing as a 'best' rifle. It all depends on what you want to do, what your land is like, what you want to shoot on it. You also have considerations such as neighbours - do they mind noise? What are your backstops, local danger areas, etc? When you know these points, we can tell you what rifle fits the features best.
  15. Agreed, my 223 don't do that 243 yes, not 223 though...
  16. You're right John, sometimes you go out and can't hit a bloody thing, other nights you go out and no matter how rubbish your rest, how far the shot, how small the target, the bullet strikes home and it rolls over. Strange world
  17. SS, normally I agree with you, but not here. Just because the police are hampered in their use of weapons by daft rules, doesn't mean we should be too. In a situation where I have to confront someone like that, if I have a rifle with me it is more likely to mean that they don't attack me, for their own safety. That means that if I expect confrontation the weapon is a good thing to have - better to have and not need, than need and not have. The law should permit this. I love the American attitude. In the sporting goods store, alongside sporting rifles and AR15s, there are f*** off g
  18. It runs until your mentor is satisfied that you can do whatever they're mentoring without their presence. So if you get the experience in 2 weeks, it can be as short as that. TBH, it's a good idea in theory, but annoyingly overused by terrified police forces in today's litigious society
  19. Which brands of ammo have you tried with it? I wouldn't get one of the Simmons ones, I had a 6-24x44 briefly of theirs and it was absolutely awful. Badly built, optically poor. It went back PDQ. Personally I'd stick with the Burris, Fullfield II has good enough optics and I wouldn't worry about the parallax. What mag do you use?
  20. You're more than welcome FD, it was good to meet you. I had a very good night out indeed on Monday, thoroughly enjoyed it. Just wish the pub had been doing food
  21. Sorry but you're way off there. The law is f***ing rubbish in this country, ethically, I'm taking the heaviest, nastiest gun I have. The thieves will be dealt with - by that I mean ideally detained, failing that asked to leave. However, if I am about to be set upon, they're having it. And I find the current situation, where I am not allowed to prepare for a potentially life-threatening encounter, absolutely, utterly ludicrous. Effectively, you have to be hit, attacked or whatever before you can deal with them? It's mad, and another reason on my very long list of reasons to move to th
  22. I load up my 25-shot mag for the .22, and the 10 as well. Rarely finish the 25-shot. Foxing, usually 3 in the mag, one up the spout and 10 or so reloads. If I need more than that I'm either f***ing annoyed, in which case best go home, or I've had a good night, in which case best go home Deer, normally take the end of whichever box with me, but I don't really need it, if I fire 2 shots something went wrong.
  23. That's because nobody round your way shoots Hornet. Get a Hornet, buy their stock and see if they buy any more! My local shops didn't
  24. Most of what I would say has been said. But, 223 or hornet produce edible rabbits with head shots.
