Mine's not a fan of the Prvi. American Eagle 50gr JHP - 3/4 inch group at 100 yards, can't complain about effectiveness on a fox or muntjac either.

A quick butcher's on Guntrader reveals a 243 Howa, not thumbhole, complete with P8 mod for £620, in Northants too. Looks promising

deer rifle to supplement a 22-250
Mr_Logic replied to archie_199er's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Old debate about 2 rifles or 1. 243 is really the only choice to do both, and it can be done. Decent scope with reliable adjustments and you can switch easily. Or you could keep the 22/250 and get a 308. 308 does offer more for the larger deer, though if you can shoot 243 will work just fine - plenty of penetration and enough energy to get the job done. -
You'll do it for that money if you're careful. Regarding T/H stocked rifles, yes, Howa - 1500 laminate thumbhole, can be had with light or heavy barrel. Are you shooting from a vehicle? That's very important here, because - 1. Varmint barrels are a b*****d to carry around all night (take it from one who did, and suffered lots the next day!) 2. Varmint barrels from a vehicle can be unwieldy, but chop them to 20" or so and they're OK (a la SPS tactical, which sadly Remington don't do in 243) Tikka T3 Varmint would be a good choice as they're 20 inch barrel and relatively lightw

I completely agree!!! I rang Kidlington and said, I have a 17HMR moderator slot, I want a 243 rifle instead, will this need a visit? They said No, tbh I was expecting one, and I guess it makes sense. I guess it doesn't matter what the name of it is really, whether it's a free variation or a one-for-one. Forces across the country treat this differently, as per bloody usual. I think we need to centralise firearms licensing, we will get one policy which we may then collectively fight, we end up with sensible debate and better regulation, doubtless for less cost to our taxes.

I'm sure it will shoot well, mine sure did. Enjoy

I have had several variations where calibre has been changed, no visit has been required. Said FEO may yet again be wrong...
-
Price wise, that strikes me as daylight robbery! Secondhand the rifle is worth about £200, the moderator bugger all. AGS scopes secondhand are never worth that kind of money, AVOID! (or get him to knock at least £100 off!)

No. Because the conditions generally list the Good Reason for the firearm, and not an exhaustive list of quarry species. There is no law to saw you can't shoot them. The confusing wording cannot IMHO confirm OR deny the shooting of foxes. If I don't know anything about this discussion and shoot a fox when my ticket says Vermin, if I get hauled over the coals for it, the first words out of my mouth would be 'but, officer, foxes ARE vermin, and my ticket says vermin'. If the police wish to make a category for it, they should specifically EXCLUDE foxes on a vermin ticket. But I doubt thi

American Eagle 50gr JHP are very good and not bank-bustingly expensive. Scope choice is a very personal matter, but as a general rule of thumb here's a quick guide (for future reference from the wonders of Google if nothing else!): Broken into 4 main quality brackets: Chinese Japanese American European Chinese - Hawke (mostly), MTC, Nikko Stirling, AGS. These scopes are comparatively cheap tat, but they work up to a point and if you get a good one you get a good deal. Quality control can be lacking, and they're never good for centrefire use at night. MTC deserves a mention h

Here's a thing, the police interpretation of the law may be different, but the law itself remains the same. In the eyes of the law, you must be proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt to be convicted. Ergo, if the police guidance can't even decide, then it would be impossible to convict someone for shooting a fox on a vermin ticket because there is definitely reasonable doubt whether an offence has been committed, even if there is absolute proof you did indeed use the rimfire to shoot the fox. Mainly because the offence brought before the court would be breach of FAC terms, and this

The S&B is certainly a good option. Range is a little limited by the thick ret though. My Meopta 4-16x44 was £575 and is very good, with mildots, front focus and a fine reticle (that works surprisingly well under a lamp). If you can't get to the 575, then £430 from the Sportsman gets you the 3.5-10x50, which will have optics as good as (well I can't see the difference, even at night) the Schmidt, but with a finer reticle and more mag, so you get a bit further in terms of when you can see to hit Charlie.
-
I've got one of those too. Very nice scope although I do fine the thick reticle a little much. You could get a Leupold VX-III, they're pretty good at night too. What's your budget?

just ask for a "one for one" they wont be any charge, well my feo didnt charge... You can do a variation but they will charge. The free one for one is for when you swap like for like .222 for another.222 it depends what your firearms officer is like!! what you on about ? what would be the point of swapping a calibre for the same calibre ?? a one for one is to swap over two different calibres.. i recently done a one for one from a .38/357 to a .22 with no charge, that is classed as a one for one. F**k Me ..yet another balls up between police regions...a one for on

Thanks Charlie. Coldweld - this is the sort of post I am after, constructive, useful information. You want to argue that I said the 243 would do everything in the world, yeah whatever. It remains a capable calibre for target and long range fox and is my choice for this role still. I merely used the then-recent chap who won a 1000 yard comp to illustrate that 243 can do the job. You may or may not have noticed I'm changing calibre for a different reason. I'm not arguing grammar, I really can't be arsed. As for wildcats, I couldn't be arsed with them then, and I still can't. They d

I expect this slot will get changed again before anything happens Would be good to find someone with one but they're still comparatively rare, sadly

Good going, nice big fox and a good shot too. Re ammo, I also use the Remington stuff at the moment, seems OK in the RWS. As and when I get my press (roll on pay day!) I shall try and work up a load for the 58gr, I had some Norma ammo with that bullet and it's superb.

Actually you spell it programme, go look in a dictionary. I didn't actually say anything about a 260 Rem, at all, whatsoever, nada, never mentioned it. Please don't post any more on my threads, your comments aren't welcome.
-
Get with the programme! 204 Ruger has been a factory round for the last 4 years... And at no point have I said that there was no need for wildcat calibres, just that I personally didn't see the need for them. I still don't, I don't do anything that requires one. As and when I do then maybe I'll change my mind, till then, they're too much hassle. I didn't actually say I had all that was needed either, just that a 243 is a good choice for long range fox and target, custom rifle or otherwise. And it is... I've just sent in a variation, for a slot I may never use (and one that I will). Bu

Well, form has been sent off, I kept with what I originally asked for - 22WMR and 243. Probably change it later, but until I know more about reloading and what the rifles like, I will stick with what I know. And 243 is the most versatile calibre there is, so can't really go too far wrong.
-
I would simply ask nicely for .243, I think you will be fine. I speak from experience, make sure you buy quality to start with, it's cheaper in the long run. Optics especially - I have a large pile of cheaper scopes on my book case at home, I've decided anything else I buy will be good glass. Still on the lookout for savings, but with better deals, not cheaper stuff. Meopta would be my recommendation, I got a 4-16x44 for the 243 and it's great. Also got a Nightforce which is on the target rifle. People say they're worth the hassle, and i never believed it. I looked through the good stu

How much am I looking at for one of those? Can't find any info anywhere!
-
Nah, I can reload it for about 45p, that's only twice an HMR - I'm not clearing massive farms or anything, it'd only be rabbits when I'm bored out foxing, when there's no fox to shoot at.
-
243 is still pretty loud for general use, and immensely destructive on rabbits though. I agree it's the best fox round though...
