silly reloading newbie question
Mr_Logic replied to Mr_Logic's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
Yeah that makes sense at last Cheers muchly BTW, using the 35gr bullet for a full load is fine, the AA2230 powder I have has a load that's meant to shoot it at about 3900fps, might be worth a try -
silly reloading newbie question

The maximum has a lot to do with litigation american style. Also these maximums have to cover the guy with a modern sporting rifle and also the guy with a rifle built in 1895 of the same calibre. At the end of the day it is all about common sense and sensible experimentataion. It is worth remembering that most of the most accurate loads are acheived by using loads well below the manufacturer's maximum. Just be sensible Peter So basically have a play, and keep a very close eye on brass etc for signs of pressure? -
X-mark trigger is very definitely user-adjustable, use the right allen key! It's a US size, says in the manual. Took me next to no time. American Eagle brass is standard federal stuff, nothing ex-military there at all...

silly reloading newbie question
Mr_Logic replied to Mr_Logic's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
Oh, and next stupid question... Looking through various reloading guides, and people's loads on the web, some have gone considerably over the published manufacturer maximum load for a power/bullet combo. I understand that this will be done very carefully for a given rifle, but since it says don't exceed the max load, how have people done this? What am I missing here? Many thanks -
silly reloading newbie question

Thanks Snap. What I don't get, is how in 22 Hornet, 13 grains of Lil' Gun produces a useful load, yet in the 223 which tolerates higher pressures, that same 13 grains of Lil' Gun doesn't work. Now, I understand that with different chamber sizes you get different results, but it's puzzling me that there seems no way to use this at all... (even if it ends up being rubbish - just for a try...) -
Right then, quick newbie question... I have the reloading gear at last, and I also have a whole load of Hornet stuff I got when I had Hornet, but at the time no press etc to actually make the ammo. So... is it possible to make up a very light load in 223 based on a 35gr V-max bullet and Hodgdon lil' gun powder? I see from a forum that Lil' Gun is meant to be too fast for 223. I know nothing on this yet, at the start of a very long road! What does that actually mean? Does it mean really bad things? Could I use it in Hornet-sized amounts with the 35gr vmax to produce a Hornet-powered

The Jena bit is the East German Zeiss, now Docter. Should still be very good optically, bet they work a charm. Shame about the weight though

Pish, tush! If we changed the law so I could buy what I like, they'd have it quiet!

A deer! Still no foxes though, and bloody foul weather -
When I bought my SPS Tactical I put an S5 on the front of the SPS standard they had at Adenbourne. The balance was fine, considerably better than your Tikka. I think they still have that SPS so as one to look at, it should suit nicely

I don't see spending a vast sum on a 22LR scope. You could in theory get the usual suspects like S&B, Swaro etc but you gain nothing, really. My advice would be a Falcon, MTC or JSR scope. They all seem to be OK for the money. I have JSR on my 17HMR and optically, next to my Meopta, Nightforce or S&B it's shocking. But next to another quid scope, it's great, and it's as good as stuff costing £100 more. But, the adjustments work very well for an quid scope, and tbh on a rimfire it'll do.

... hangs head in shame... I was accosted by my FEO the other day about my 243 variation, all sorts of issues that were BS. Anyway he ended up charging me for what is definitely a one-for-one, so I changed things around a bit.. My second 243 slot has become a 204 Ruger slot... So interested to hear which one you go for. I also added another 308, some more moderators and a bit more ammo. What the hell - if they're having 26 quid then I want some stuff! I don't think Tikka's doing a 204 yet, so might have to be someone else. CZ, Ruger or Howa leap to mind. Not sure about the L/H bits.

Good going that man, I am still on nil for this year -
Those Norma 58gr, they sure are messy, I have seen many foxes looking, shall we say, the worse for wear, after an encounter with them! Good shooting anyway, glad to hear they're working for you.

what did you hit that with? Worked well

I love the Hogue stocks, they might be flimsy up front but it doesn't seem to matter, and they have a reinforced swivel stud so your Harris bipod doesn't rip out the plastic. I also find the grip about right for my hands too, very comfy, even in cold shitty weather.

Yes, although mainly in my CZ 527 as that gets used in the field more, since it's nice and light.

Ballistic tips, or equivalent, tend to have the best fragmentation, and have been designed in 224 calibre (and lightweight 243) to kill for fox-sized animals. They expand well, and thanks to good ballistics hold a lot of their energy. Hence their high price! I find an American Eagle 50gr JHP works very nicely out to 250 yards or so though, and they are cheap.

No it says Japan's Secret Optics and it says that because the guy who does Optisan is Japanese, but the scopes themselves are made in China.

Not normally a choice of whether to use the vehicle, least I don't get one - I'm walking! I use a Lightforce 170 mounted on my scope, and it works a charm. Don't take it off to scan, just scan round with the gun! Much quicker too. Can't see why anyone would do it any other way... Only thing is there can be glare from the moderator. Easy solution finally discovered - take one standard black sports sock, cut the end off so it is a tube. place over moderator and tighten to barrel and moderator using two small elastic bands. My other hand rides so the plaiting bands from the horse work a c

I have a T8-AR on mine, good balance, good sound moderation, decent price. The predator 8 does a similar job but is strippable for cleaning, so that might be a better choice. P8 didn't fit the screw cut of my particular rifle, and the T8 works a charm.

if said squirrel has all of a decent tree behind it, then it gets shot, no problem there. But there is no way I'd shoot it without that decent backstop, that's mad...
-
Couldn't agree more! The Howa lightning is where you'd be when comparing to a T3 lite. They're still heavier than the Tikka but nowhere near as bad as the Varmint, and they're also better balanced than the Tikka when using a moderator. As to which to choose of the two, hmmm, probably the Howa because it's cheaper, and the action is so smooth that for once the lack of a DM isn't a problem. But I'd still buy a CZ. Finally some brand loyalty

Baffle set is about £45, swapping it takes maybe 2 minutes tops.

the 50gr AE are a jacketed hollow point, and expand very well - mine rarely exit a fox. All other AE 223 ammo is FMJ though, and is either 55 or 62gr.
