  1. There's no such thing, it depends on how you like to shoot, and what you consider to be a relatively small budget... I am assuming by 'rimfire' you mean 22LR?
  2. Good one FD, hope you get the last one soon - cheeky fox!
  3. If you want decent NV you are looking at a lot more than a grand. Try about 3, last time I checked. ON a 223 you really want Gen 3 or Gen 3+. Caveat - not used any so cannot speak from experience, but I did a deal of digging a while back and my conclusion was that for CF, I need to spend more money than I have, by a lot, so use the lamp for now...
  4. Hundred quid for a cut without proof is very steep, can get it done near here for £40, £ proofed.
  5. Fultons tend to charge list on everything and often add a bit on top, BUT what on earth ammo cost £49. for 20??? I suspect it might be the Remington stuff I have. Interesting to note if you already have the press and cases, I can buy dies and primers for £55-£60. If you already load something which uses large rifle primers, the dies are £35-odd (can't remember but it wasn't quite 40 quid). So roughly the same as ONE box of ammo from them. While normal people charge less, it still hammers home how much you can save!
  6. Agree with you totally.Read thread on Airgun BBS and think you got a c**p response. Common sense is needed in choice of calibre and FEO area advice as well as BBS. Thanks for that. I really appreciate that - been quite lonely on there with my point of view! Deker makes a good point on the fox calibre too. I've just got in from shooting, knocked over a fox at 50 yards with the 223 and didn't go to plan. Tool of choice there would have been a 22LR (or 22WMR) semi auto - I like the quick follow up if something has gone wrong. In this case I think the zero's not quite right, as two shots
  7. I happen to agree, but then I guess the difference of opinion explains why there's more than one rifle on the market
  8. My solution would be to go to Opticswarehouse, get the Weaver/Picatinny rail for the T3. Then get a set of 30mm medium Leupold PRW rings, should be good to go. Cost £60 or so when done, but mounts are very important so money very well spent.
  9. What make is your scope? 243 kicks a bit harder than 222, so might affect it. Other thing, 24 mag is so big I doubt you'd use it on deer, but each to their own. Have you considered CZ or Howa? Both are much cheaper than the Tikka and will serve you well. That said, the T3 is a very good gun, I am just of the opinion that GMK are taking the piss and don't deserve the business. The T3 is already far more cost than its competitors, and when you do want to buy one, they haven't bothered to buy enough so you can. Other importers, for Howa, Remington and CZ, are nowhere near as bad. (a
  10. You don't need to shoot a half inch group at 50 yards to kill a fox at that distance also - a fox has a reasonable kill zone, even the head, at that range. A 1 inch group is more practical. --- regarding fox and vermin conditions, well, I just got kicked off AirgunBBS because of that one so I shall be brief. Since firearms licensing departments do this differently, that in itself creates a grey area. Added to this is that fact that fox is widely considered to be vermin, so it's very ambiguous. I got told by Thames Valley that foxes are vermin, so crack on. other people in Thames Valle
  11. Hmmm! I keep trying, just coz I said I needed to test some loads out...
  12. Any reason specifically for the Tikka?
  13. 50 yard zero for subs, only good to 100 really anyway. Regarding foxes, they work if you can hit them right, mostly that works out to 50-odd yards.
  14. I don't think you will get too much grief from Plod with a photocopy, especially if it's a black & white one. It's there to stop you buying guns/ammo with a good colour copy.
  15. Not sure your argument works mate. I don't doubt that the .222 will do the job, but when you say 'nothing can compete' - what are you meaning? 222 works, but there are far better calibres. If you want to talk lack of powder to get the job done, try a Hornet with 13grains of lil' gun, works to 200 yards as well. 223 has more velocity than 222 and is therefore flatter and slightly harder hitting, and terms of accuracy, well, hrmph! Get the right rifle and the right load and 223 will compete with anything you like.
  16. Of the two, the 223 wins due to extra grunt and availability. Personally I want to give the 204 Ruger a go, but can't recommend until I've tried it. In my experience any centrefire works well, if you want to get the range over 200 yards, then 223 is good to 300-ish. 22-250, 243 to 400 (or 5 if you can shoot that well). In terms of purely stopping power, and therefore largest margin for error, the best fox tool is a 243, loaded with a hot load, or factory, 58gr v-max. Flies very flat and hits like an express freight train. Large holes appear in Charlie, and he very, very rarely gets
  17. I thought it said fraud? Anyhow something does My ticket is off for variation at the mo so I am reliant on the database if stopped Normally take a copy but FEO grabbed it off me when he came round, so no opportunity, especially since the appointment was made with about 10 minutes' notice, and when I had a cold too.
  18. Suggest you get your mentor to write a letter specifically about the deer, and make sure your FEO is copied. Shouldn't have any problems, although I would keep the 222 and have 243 as well.
  19. You've been out too much that Logic bloke :D nah that's not me The guy that supplies the reloading stuff round here
  20. Mine is the SPS tactical, so 1:9 and not in any way the same, but it likes pretty much everything. I've worked up a load for it now, first reloading challenge ticked off - 23.5 gr of AA2230 and Lapua 69gr bullet, grouping well < 1/2 MOA @100 yards. I had considerable success with Federal and Norma 40gr factory stuff though, knocking over bunnies and foxes very nicely. Also shoots Sako 50gr ballistic tip, as well as Prvi 55gr SP reasonably well. Looks a lovely rifle, I bet it will be great fun.
  21. I'll agree with you there, i find it far too light Too light? Good lord, you wouldn't like my tweaked triggers at all then!! You can adjust it to make it heavier Kev, how big are the bits of land? Are they near housing? Do the people moan at you about the noise from the shotgun? How far do you think you will need to shoot? Answer these questions before choosing the calibre, and tbh, with 12 places to shoot, I'd put HMR, 22LR and possibly a 22 centrefire on the FAC application, I expect you could justify it and it will make life easier in the future.
  22. I use an ultrasonic cleaner, with 25% pickling vinegar/75% hot water mix. Works a charm
  23. That's the one I have mate If you get one, tape down the battery holder lid! Actually no it's not, I think I have the 450 scout, I'd check, but there's tape over the bit where it says what it is!!
  24. Let me know what he says, by the sounds of things there might well be a Ruger 10/22 and a CZ 550 heading his way as well
  25. Leupold standard bases and rings, work well. If you fancy Weaver mounts i have a set of Remington 700 weaver bases gathering dust But the Leupold stuff works for me - torx heads on them, well made, not had any strife at all.
