  1. Its worth it If there is something to shoot -and there often is - but since going four-eyed with age anything more than a drizzle tends to keep me indoors. Looking through a wet scope via wet glasses really does make hard work of things ! Otherwise go for it . You won't know till you've tried .
  2. They are just a black (melanistic) colour variety of the grey . The variation seems commoner in Eastern England for some reason . My part of Sussex throws up more white squirrels than anywhere else apparently .In fact the emblem of my local golf course is a white squirrel. I suppose for obvious reasons they tend to not get so much chance to pass their genes on so don't form the large local populations that the black does. The black variety is claimed to be more aggressive but there is no obvious reason why it should be unless some disadvantage of being black has led to an inbred survi
  3. That's an honest post from someone who owns a whippet xgreyhound I've not seen one run for a while but for sheer elegant almost artistic coursing combined with manic single mindedness to bring down their bunny or hare the ones I saw were very exciting to watch . Probably a bit of a specialist enthusiasts breed rather than an everyday lurcher though.
  4. Rabbit skulls should be easy to come by. Just stroll along hedgerows that have burrows under them and you'll often spot skulls . Failing that ,chaps who do a lot of ferreting come across them all the time . I have one in my van. My mate put it in my glove-box for a joke . The way a rabbit's teeth keep growing like curved chisels and need wearing-down by constant use to avoid actually curling back into the animals face is just the sort of gruesome stuff kids love !
  5. EEK. Most of us go to a lot of trouble to stop birds going into our tunnels! Keep up the good work with the squills though .
  6. My SILaw recently bought a 17 and the Fao had no worries about allowing fox. I'd heard that the round was "no good" for them ,that it "broke-up without doing any real damage" etc . Having seen what it did to rabbits this made no sense at all As I suspected the fact that it does a lot of damage is a real killing point when it goes into a fox's brain or chest . SILaw has shot about a dozen so far with no problem . If you back-end any quarry whether it be a fox with rimfire or a roe with a 243 the result will not be satisfactory. Rifles in this crowded island have
  7. Wind up or not in this case I do know that Jehovas Witnesses do avoid blood products . To those involved this is an important aspect of their beliefs and whether non Jehovas Witnesses understand the relevence or not it is not really an issue that should invoke controversy or ridicule . The very act of cutting the throat or breaking the neck of a freshly killed rabbit and hanging it up by the back legs will will cause much of the blood to drain downwards through gravity . If you doubt me see how much paler the flesh of a skinned rabbit treated thus compares with a rabbit that has
  8. i have it on good authority that no dog can take 1 single handed The Irish Mole Hound -ancestor of the wolf hound but so much more mastiff-like and probably with a touch of bull-blood of course - is probably the only dog that could have done it . Certainly sorted the Irish mole problem ....
  9. This is a mole . At this time of year there are a lot of young ones in the fields . You do not require any sort of permission from the landowner (who will no doubt treat you to a cheery wave when he sees what you are up to) to simply enter the fields and dispatch them . The traditional method is to bugger them to death so off you go and enjoy yourself tomorrow
  10. My mate's lad owns this first cross bedlington /whippet.
  11. Maybe ready for something after next Christmas but there's no hurry
  12. i think its is crocii when theres more than one .. someone told me at work today thats what safron is crocus pollen Very educational ,bit like fungii or hippopotamii. Don't suppose the bees care about such things as long as they bag-up on saffron .Or in the case of the one in your neat little picture get the stuff all over her head !
  13. Very true .A nest of kits can hold up proceedings. The does at this time of year get quite protective about their little breeding territories and quite often the best buries come to be held by a dominent pair that won't tolerate too many other rabbits sharing their burrows .All in all it can be sticky going ferreting in the spring.
  14. The bumbles seem late around here but it was great to see the honey bees out in force at the first sign of sunshine . And you are right kay ,the crocuses (should that be crocii?) were really buzzing .
  15. You really do need to find someone with a .22 rimfire or a .410 and 2" cartridges or silencer before you think about setting it or you could find yourself in a bit of a fix. A friend of mine many years ago lent one of his traps to a bowling green groundsman with strict instructions to call him when a fox was caught. having heard nothing for a while he turned up to see what was going on only to be told that several foxes had been caught . "How did you kill them ?",he asked . The groundsman -who was apparently quite a big chap shrugged and said that he had'nt wanted
  16. That's what I was thinking 60-70 cm that's over two foot in proper money ! Perch along with tench are my favourite fish .Had several just over two and a half pounds from the Dorset Stour and the headwaters of the Sussex Arun- good fish but not monsters . There's "something" about all decent perch though .You just look at them and they all have their own character or a quirk that seems to tell some sort of story .
  17. Fast long-dog(god know's what breeding ,just looks like a slightly wiry coated greyhound ) sire over a border collie dam ...
  18. If you missis does'nt think this little chap is cute I'm afraid there is no hope ! Good luck!
  19. Just a very quick post thanking all who voted for my contribution to the Interesting trap Competition . Somewhat embarrassingly I find myself in the rare position of actually having won something . I know that there are probably many folk out there who had they contributed could have added greatly to the competition but on a slightly mercenary note I'n sort of glad they did'nt as I am now the proud owner of a brand new trapping hammer courtesy of john b. The hammer arrived this morning. How's that for lightening service?.As I signed the postie's docket I could'nt help have a f
  20. I once watched a cock pheasant frantically treading his hen at the side of the road . The only thing was she was stone dead having been obviously run over a short time before i arrived on the scene . As my lodger pointed out ,"Who was the pervert . The cock for engaging in necrophilia or me for stopping to watch?".
  21. I'd go with all so far mentioned and with making sure the trap is positioned in a good place and as arniboy suggests naturalising them with the environment a bit . Bird fat balls and peparami stay on the hook well. a Star Bars are good . I think they contain peanut butter .I've used them quite a bit since doing a job in a shop where the rats had shown a marked preference for shoplifting them despite the abundence of other food. This one went for a classic cocktail of peparami and bacon fat .
  22. I often don't know what sort of trap I'm going to be using till I've dugthe hole and decided which design suits the situation . As far as scissors go I prefer the old fashioned type with the curved jaws over the modern straight legged type. I've even been known to tear a modern trap apart so I could use the springs to rejuvenate an old trap.
  23. Hopefuly it was the work of someone who just used ill-judged language rather than a serious threat. I posted a picture a while back of one of two foxes that I'd shot in a wood shed next to our local park.It actually had maggots feeding on its sores .The customer lives in a house with a large garden in a sort of fox paradise . Hospital grounds ,school ,public park, town centre ,railway and duck-pond all within a tiny radius . She actually once watched one mange ridden fox drop dead on her lawn!
  24. Kate Humble .Love her or loathe her she actually is a very professional, intelligent and talented lady which is probably why the BBC tend to over-expose her a bit .She certainly carried poor old Bill Oddie and almost succeded in covering up the fact that the poor guy seems to running on a very jagged mental edge . And Lurcher Girl ,your comment about a barn fit for baby Jesus was quite near the mark. Next week Kate herself is due to drop large triplets and a very difficult birth has been fore-cast .A selection of calving chains and tyre levers has been prepared and the cameras
