  1. A buzzard would've eaten in- situ and maybe tugged the carcase about a bit . They may look like big birds but surely they can't weigh more than about 3 lbs at most . To carry-off a cat-sized animal would take a small team of em ! An adult fox is a possibility though I've seen dead cubs untouched outside of occupied fox earths and I've never seen a fox feeding on one of its roadkill brethren. Does'nt mean it does'nt happen of course . A badger has to be the best bet . A friend buried his faithfull old Jack Russel in the bluebell woods where the old dog had enjoyed regular walks
  2. I am a very sad person Next week I'm off to Africa to film man-eating leopards !
  3. It does indeed look like a pike.I've wiggled a picture to compare with it . Were you waiting for it to show itself or were you just really quick with the camera ? Brill action shot !
  4. I wonder if it had a close encounter with a tree surgeon . My mate has had squills run over him when he's been up a tree with a saw . Just another possibility.
  5. Fropm that angle : the chunky torpedo-like body ,the wide head with a big grin as it slurps something off the top =chub.
  6. Well ,I strolled down to the mill-stream where I quietly tackled -up behind some bushes lest the fish be alarmed by the presence of such a dangerous predator as myself stalking the banks like a chimera twixt velociraptor and heron . The first cast was made toward the far bank and as my free-lined maggot and worm cocktail tumbled downstrean the rod arched over and began to buck in my hands like a water- diviner's wand on amphetamines. After a struggle lasting for well over twenty minutes I managed to land a fish so huge that its removal from the stream caused the water level to dr
  7. Excellent choice Watchman . God it was so much easier when I was kid . None of this bourgois choice of rods .all I had was an old wooden thing with a top section made from a bamboo garden cane with a couple of wood staples for eyes and a 2n half inch bakelite reel . Stillfishing the same bit of mill-stream though !
  8. Off to greet the new season in half an hour . Couple of hours fishing from dusk into the dark. Mill stream with sluggish pools between fast shallows . Bream, roach ,perch ,dace ,gudgeon ,eels, jack pike etc and too many bl**dy crap ,er carp. Sooner or later one will eventually pick up the bait . Anything from tiddlers up to something touching a double . Worms ,bread ,maggots . Probably light link ledger or free-lining down the flow . Now do I go for the fixed spool and John Wilson quiver tip or the centre-pin and split cane? You lot decide and I'll bore you wit
  9. I agree . Once every 15 years is more than enough . Except if someone gives free tickets and a badge. It was quite fun bumping ito a few of my customers though . They assumed my badge marked me out as some sort of steward or rent -boy . The "Vice Presidents Guest " did rather throw them !
  10. That's the trouble . If we trust what we see that ain't no chub . As you say too pointy ,not cylindrical shaped enough with big white lips and a chubby bull-nosed head . If we start making allowances for distortion and look at the rounded fins ,the dark tail etc ....
  11. Whether it was filmed on a game ranch or not it certainly was'nt an event worth preserving on film and then showing to the world. Howard Hill -the guy who is said to have split the arrow for real in the old Erol Flyn Robin hood film- is one to watch if you want bow-hunting . Puma ,elephants ,even a grape off a blokes head ! Check him out .
  12. Refraction makes it look a little too pointy-nosed but it looks like a chub otherwise . Did it have a fairly conspicuous whitish tinge to its lips ?
  13. Here are a few from the show . First time I've been for years but a customer gave me some guest tickets . Prefferential parking and free entry. Guess which is my favourite picture. To continue the rustic theme I watched my grand-daughter in the local school's combined country dancing display in the evening . Hundreds of innocent little children running about in summer dresses. All I could think of was that film ...CHILDREN OF THE CORN!
  14. Dunno . I suppose a squill might well chew itself to clean up a wound and that might explain the neatness of things . In a rural area I s'pose a near thing with a .22 round.Maybe someone playing with home-made snares , but my money is that its been chucked-up by an untunnelled Fenn but as has been said -looks too squared -off . What about electrocution on a power-line or similar ?
  15. Jaspers started early with customers spotting little nests at the back-end of May .It went a bit chilly ,damp and quiet with just a couple of nests last week but the sun came out today and I've had two calls this evening . Hornets seem to be about early and I had trouble finding homes for a couple of bee swarms as there really does'nt seem to be the usual shortage .
  16. A lot of truth spoken there . Sadly I can't pass a builder's skip without spotting something that one day might become incorporated into a "really ,really usefull" bit of pest control kit. Once obtained such rubbish is set about with anorakial zeal(anorakial !). At this point there is possibly only a 1 in 10 chance that it will emerge as a thing of purpose rather than the tunnel-trap equivelent of Quasimodo!. The rare successful designs may be made in a variety of materials to match , as they say in the greeting card industry , every occasion. I even have a couple of very
  17. Chap potters down to the riverbank and is about to make his first cast when a loud voice from his backside goes, "No you idiot you've got to set the float over depth !.". The angler shakes his head in disbelief but does as he's told . This goes on all day with the voice from the back-passage keeping up a barrage of advice and tips on bait and tactics. At the end of the day the angler is a nevous wreck . The voice has driven him mad and his peacefull day on the bank has been ruined . The next morning he goes to see the Doctor and explains the problem . "Don't worry,"s
  18. My prototypes with the hole at the top had the bait placed in a compartment below the trap so that the squirrel was supposed to dive right through the middle rather than just pick at the trigger wires but as mentioned I wasn't happy with them . I've often wondered about the fixation with fixing squirrel tunnels vertically . I still do it on occasion when using Kanias but I can't help thinking that it is as much an aesthetic thing as anything . If the trap is baited the scent of food is likely to lure squilly in whatever angle the device is fixed at. My sometimes age- mu
  19. Does cutting the barrel down affect accuracy ?. Are the factory 16" barrels better performers than after market adaptations ? Was there a reason CZ settled on 20" length in the first place? I can see that a shorter barrel would be less cumbersome with a moderator attached but are there any downsides ? Having had my old Brno for the past 25 years I still look at her and think she looks a bit too lanky with the moderator fitted but to chop her about would be unthinkable !
  20. I think that historically on a proffessional level the supposed "Dark Art of Mole Grinning" has been jealously kept within families who kept their knowledge and trapping grounds very much at heart . Woe betide any pecieved challenger who stepped over the undrawn boundaries or who hoped for a short-cut to Talpidean knowledge. Now that traditional mole bothering is making a big come-back the old attitudes and quaint ,almost Masonic , secrecy are becoming more apparent as well. Those who see an internet-connection as the only tool you need when it comes to gathering wisdom ma
  21. I'd be interested to see how you get on . Are you going to mount it as top entry or end entry if you know what I mean ? When I made something similar and mounted them with the holes at the top I had a couple of foul catches in the body grips .As I was experimenting with the traps in my own garden I was actually on site to deal with them quickly but it was obvious a re -think was in order. I suspect the squirrels were tentertively dangling through the entrance hole and reaching for the bait rather than diving through the middle as they should . When I mounted the box sideways l
  22. It's possible that by putting her in with the hob on the 12th for too short a time the jill was stimulated into a phantom pregnancy so when you tried again a few days later she was in no state to conceive anyway. Are you sure she was properly in season ? Did you see(and hear!) them mating?. Was there a bit of neck-biting ? P1 . I mentioned that I thought having a pseudopregnancy might be a little healthier than staying in season . Sorry for not getting back straight away . It's not so much a "conclusion" as an idea . I can't help feeling that in a natural state an animal liv
  23. Great pictures . They really capture that moment of dilema that foxes go through when the urge to make a tactical retreat is fighting with curiosity .
