Sometimes we fall off that horse because we make mistakes and sometimes we are pushed . Ya have to learn to bounce ! Two quotes that I've found usefull 1/ "Those that do not learn by their mistakes are condemned to repeat them ". This was a favourite mantra of my "ex". It took a while but eventually I took it onboard myself ,realised my mistake and dumped her . Best thing I ever did! 2/ "When in a sticky situation ask yourself what John Wayne would have done " A favourite of my old headkeeper

I understand where Duckwing is coming from . Many years ago I supplied a few mink to a lad who was researching them . I don't know how many mink he actually cut open as he was collecting them from people in several areas . I've no idea what the outcome of his study was either as once he'd had what he wanted from me he went his own way (I felt so ,so used ) ) I do recall him telling me that previous research indicated that at least a third of the diet was comprised rodents and small mammals but another third was birds -mostly waterfowl. This is no surprise as mink are asso

Polecat x mink hybrids have occurred naturally in the wild, but only in Europe as the mink needs to be the European mink. The American mink in this country doesn't hybridise with the polecat or ferret. I did'nt know that but it is a little more believable that the cross might occur with European mink as they -I believe- have a gestation period nearer the ferret's and I don't think they exhibit delayed implantation as often . As European mink do not occur in Britain and are actually quite rare it makes the claims of people who say they have a mink /ferret cross in this country even mo

All these "black" ferrets just look like rather nice dark polcat ferrets. I don't disbelieve that with a bit of artificial help ferret/mink mules might have been bred but I can't see the offspring being viable in the breeding stakes . Mink breeding biology differs in that they have a different gestation period to a ferret and can also exhibit delayed implantation . These are just my thoughts .

Commercial elver fishing is the most likely cause of the decline in eels . The days when a few locals who were in the know took up a tump and could catch enough elvers close to the bank to supply the immediate area with pots of elvers are gone . In France boats costing over 100,ooo pounds were funded by the elver industry . Many of the elvers from our rivers are whisked off to stock European and Japanese fish farms as eels are in big demand as food in other countries and elvers are rare everywhere . There is probably a reason that eels produce such massive numbers of young .

I think I saw the preceding programme where the guy tried nursing an injured one . It died and he did unman himself a bit too much but the photograghy was good . Apparently Kingfishers feather's are not blue . Its just a trick of the light ! Lovely pictures of the little ones on the branch

What sub round in a .22 CZ 452
comanche replied to whippeter69's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
Mine is a very old Brno /CZ that's fired thousands of shots - mostly Winchester's because that was what we were supplied with by the Estate. I had no complaints about accuracy (though batch quality went through a bad patch at one stage-too many duds and cracklers !)until I tried Eley's it was like an awakening . In my rifle Eley's have the edge in accuracy ,consistancy and damage inflicted . Used em ever since for anything serious . Luckily .22 ammo is so cheap that you can afford to experiment and get confidence in your round before you go out for real and I think that having experie -
disappearing dead fox...where did it go?
comanche replied to langouroux's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
A buzzard would've eaten in- situ and maybe tugged the carcase about a bit . They may look like big birds but surely they can't weigh more than about 3 lbs at most . To carry-off a cat-sized animal would take a small team of em ! An adult fox is a possibility though I've seen dead cubs untouched outside of occupied fox earths and I've never seen a fox feeding on one of its roadkill brethren. Does'nt mean it does'nt happen of course . A badger has to be the best bet . A friend buried his faithfull old Jack Russel in the bluebell woods where the old dog had enjoyed regular walks -

Excuse the camera shake . -
It does indeed look like a pike.I've wiggled a picture to compare with it . Were you waiting for it to show itself or were you just really quick with the camera ? Brill action shot !

Two Legged Squirrel......there's a first
comanche replied to Rolfe's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
I wonder if it had a close encounter with a tree surgeon . My mate has had squills run over him when he's been up a tree with a saw . Just another possibility. -
Fropm that angle : the chunky torpedo-like body ,the wide head with a big grin as it slurps something off the top =chub.

Well ,I strolled down to the mill-stream where I quietly tackled -up behind some bushes lest the fish be alarmed by the presence of such a dangerous predator as myself stalking the banks like a chimera twixt velociraptor and heron . The first cast was made toward the far bank and as my free-lined maggot and worm cocktail tumbled downstrean the rod arched over and began to buck in my hands like a water- diviner's wand on amphetamines. After a struggle lasting for well over twenty minutes I managed to land a fish so huge that its removal from the stream caused the water level to dr

Excellent choice Watchman . God it was so much easier when I was kid . None of this bourgois choice of rods .all I had was an old wooden thing with a top section made from a bamboo garden cane with a couple of wood staples for eyes and a 2n half inch bakelite reel . Stillfishing the same bit of mill-stream though !

Off to greet the new season in half an hour . Couple of hours fishing from dusk into the dark. Mill stream with sluggish pools between fast shallows . Bream, roach ,perch ,dace ,gudgeon ,eels, jack pike etc and too many bl**dy crap ,er carp. Sooner or later one will eventually pick up the bait . Anything from tiddlers up to something touching a double . Worms ,bread ,maggots . Probably light link ledger or free-lining down the flow . Now do I go for the fixed spool and John Wilson quiver tip or the centre-pin and split cane? You lot decide and I'll bore you wit

South of England show pictures
comanche replied to comanche's topic in Wildlife and General Photography
I agree . Once every 15 years is more than enough . Except if someone gives free tickets and a badge. It was quite fun bumping ito a few of my customers though . They assumed my badge marked me out as some sort of steward or rent -boy . The "Vice Presidents Guest " did rather throw them ! -
That's the trouble . If we trust what we see that ain't no chub . As you say too pointy ,not cylindrical shaped enough with big white lips and a chubby bull-nosed head . If we start making allowances for distortion and look at the rounded fins ,the dark tail etc ....
-
Whether it was filmed on a game ranch or not it certainly was'nt an event worth preserving on film and then showing to the world. Howard Hill -the guy who is said to have split the arrow for real in the old Erol Flyn Robin hood film- is one to watch if you want bow-hunting . Puma ,elephants ,even a grape off a blokes head ! Check him out .
-
Refraction makes it look a little too pointy-nosed but it looks like a chub otherwise . Did it have a fairly conspicuous whitish tinge to its lips ?

Here are a few from the show . First time I've been for years but a customer gave me some guest tickets . Prefferential parking and free entry. Guess which is my favourite picture. To continue the rustic theme I watched my grand-daughter in the local school's combined country dancing display in the evening . Hundreds of innocent little children running about in summer dresses. All I could think of was that film ...CHILDREN OF THE CORN!

Dunno . I suppose a squill might well chew itself to clean up a wound and that might explain the neatness of things . In a rural area I s'pose a near thing with a .22 round.Maybe someone playing with home-made snares , but my money is that its been chucked-up by an untunnelled Fenn but as has been said -looks too squared -off . What about electrocution on a power-line or similar ? -
Jaspers started early with customers spotting little nests at the back-end of May .It went a bit chilly ,damp and quiet with just a couple of nests last week but the sun came out today and I've had two calls this evening . Hornets seem to be about early and I had trouble finding homes for a couple of bee swarms as there really does'nt seem to be the usual shortage .

A lot of truth spoken there . Sadly I can't pass a builder's skip without spotting something that one day might become incorporated into a "really ,really usefull" bit of pest control kit. Once obtained such rubbish is set about with anorakial zeal(anorakial !). At this point there is possibly only a 1 in 10 chance that it will emerge as a thing of purpose rather than the tunnel-trap equivelent of Quasimodo!. The rare successful designs may be made in a variety of materials to match , as they say in the greeting card industry , every occasion. I even have a couple of very
