  1. Keep us posted Peg ,then I can say "told you so ".
  2. Fellman -As usual you have shown that you are a real fox hunter.Stick to your on lead ,down hole style of hard man hunting .
  3. Ive always found it best to have at least one bend or at best a right angle in artificials. If it doubles as a breeding earth ,then a short pipe off the bend will act as the"oven".Straight pipes dont seem to hold that well around us unless they are in deep cover and the ends sheltered from wind.Constructions we have used have ranged from smooth chimney liners to timber sleepers with a stone top .Experimented with concrete blocks 2 seasons ago and they held well .The down side was the rough block took the shoulder skin off most terriers worked in them .Some of the best artificials are sighted on
  4. Every single hound puppy goes through the old bent leg phase mate .Ill wager there are folds of skin down the legs and back of neck ,its a growing thing .Legs will straighten 100%.
  5. Looks more like your piping the ditch.
  6. Got to be worth a try but dont leave it lying around for the missus to find .Get out of that one :realmad:
  7. When pushed for food ,a fox will tackle cats .They are as everyone knows ,opportunists and Ive known them take piglets infront the angry sow .They are not fussy eaters and will even eat their own kind.I once shot a dog fox carrying a decayed ,headless cub !
  8. Poor things ,better to be dogged any day . Only joking .Nice one.
  9. This story indicates exactly why people dont want wolves re-introduced to Scotland.Upgrade to a brace of wolf hounds mate .
  10. Havnt heard one for the past 2 seasons .Curlews making a show around us .Ever put the lamp on a nightjar ,they fluff up .They say they return to exact same spot year after year [if its still there ]
  11. Nobody spotted hes a raghead then .Parasites . :realmad:
  12. Boon-Do you mean breaking an adult to rabbit or a pup as the age gap changes everything .Personally I have found that adult terriers who have seen rabbits as a pup ,then entered to fox tend to forget rabbits as the natural progression continues .To totally break a terrier from rabbit it should not be allowed to chase or go to ground in a rabbit hole. Those who sneered early on in the post probably enter straight to fox and miss out on a lot of early fun. 13. J.B- the traps were roughly 30 inches long with 4 inch small end and 7 inch at the mesh end .They had galv see-saws ,hinged doors at high end and rivetted U shaped block ups [see-saw supports .]The wood was treated green but I cant remember what wood it was ,not ply .Catches had to be shaken out into a mesh cage and dispatched so as not to get blood in the trap which may of altered results .If you include your time in the manufactuer of these then you will see why they were priced at that .Maybe with modern hand tools you could turn out several an hour .
  14. Pest control for money is not a job but a way of life as is keepering ,ghillie and full time stalker .Not to be taken lightly by anyone .long hours ,unsocial hours and the willingness to put yourself out when called .Thoroughly enjoyable-
  15. Best place for them was on the gibbets of old.
  16. Aye, used in carp fishing I believe .Very strong and keeps a shape well.
  17. The catch alive is the way to go with some vermin as none target species that are not doing harm can be released .
  18. Those box traps are good for all round control of anything from mink to rats .When I was keepering we trialled possably the first use of these in England. We were given 100 and had strict instructions not to bait the traps with anything as they were looking at what could be caught using the pest animals inquisitivness as oppossed to hunger.Placed under dry stone walls ,under footbridges, ditches and in feed store areas ,we caught everything including a wild polecat which was taken away by the university doing the study .The only flaw in these is that they allow the gnawing vermin, rats ,squirrels
  19. How small is that terrier in first pic .Nothing smaller than a rat can make holes that size .Voles holes are in grass and the grass around is grazed short.
  20. Ticks this time of year are likely to be small ones .Contrary to popular belief they dont latch into the skin straight away.It takes several hours or even a day to bury in as they like to migrate to the ears and armpits and if noticed soon enough ,they can be removed by hand or tweezers[ if your not a ruffty -tuffty ground worker].Squeeze the head of the tick between thumb and fingernail to produce a satisfying click !.Unnoticed ticks ,usually around the ears ,that have buried in can be removed with a dab of parafin but dont pull it off until the body withers. The mouth parts withdraw as they d
  21. 100% rat holes, the majority of which are unused by the algae around them. You may have a straggler moved in if new holes are appearing .Fill them in and see what opens up?Let the dogs do their thing on any fresh holes.
