  1. I used to associate with a pigeon man and Im sure he said that any bird from another loft will not stay around even if shut in for awhile .The only way to guaranty a stayer is to shut him in with a hen bird and any resulting chicks will be fixed to your loft .
  2. No mate, the vast majority of first season newts will be out of the water by mid-september with only a few (if they have been poor growers) remaining behind. They will all emerge en masse and crawl away and hide. This will happen during the night and you probably will not see them. They will be around 3/4 of an inch in length if they are smooth/palmate, but a little longer if Gcrested. Good luck with them.....
  3. What about the troublesome youngster thats spoiling for a fight. They know they have a purpose in life but have not yet seen the way forward, as in work.To hold such a dog back is asking for fights and scores to be settled whilst exercising ,and not many people have the time to walk a dog seperately .I have found that a pup such as this changes overnight when given a purpose in life .I wouldnt like to think I had to suffer this just to stick to the 2 year mark .Im not saying that the youngster should be worked continuous from this point on but regular enough to keep him sane .O.M.O but maybe so
  4. Unfortunately out of my hands .All trophy heads go to the Great Hall unless paid for and £3ooo is a bit steep dont you agree .Photos and the memory will have to do on this occasion . I will try to put up another pic from a different angle but not very good at it .Keeps refusing the format from imageshack .Any suggestions?
  5. Not the first or the last either . :realmad:
  6. Good on you for caring .Our newts in the pond have left already but the younsters need a whole season in the water I think .

  10. Cracking strong dog that chocolate mate .I like it .
  11. I wont stoop so low as to mention the obvious Russel pun . :11: Are they all entered now terriermaid ?
  12. Caused a bit of a stir locally.Someones saying it was on their patch last year but with distorted antler only ,no velvet.
  13. Socks- I respect your decision mate but will it leave you wondering whether or not you have missed a season of work from the dog .I in no way endorse early entering but I do like to think I know when to enter a pup and wouldnt like to think it hinged on any given time span .When a pup is fighting for the hell of it at exercise then its time it saw some work to channel the aggression away from its kennel mates.A satisfied terrier walks with the others .Each to their own and long may that be . foxdropper .
  14. The head weighed in at 7kg today which, as the average head and antlers weighs 2kg, was a lump of growth.Apparently ,the lack of testes is what causes this growth in antler and velvet as all the testosterone goes into producing the head set and not sex drive . The head is being sent to a taxidermist as they were worried it would deteriorate rapidly as theres blood vessels all over it.The thing is rather gross to be honest and I think I did the beast a favour by culling it .
  15. Andy super dogs -You are obviously a very well accomplished lamper of winter hares mate and fair play to you and your dogs.We do not have 20 hares around us to run but what we do see are over classed at night by a brace of mediocre lurchers to tell the truth and were into sport not slaughter .I think you would have posted anyway even if I never but thats my opinion .The numbers game has never appealled to me or anyone I know [except rats] so our lurchers will never be tested to breaking point as they must be ruunnig that amount of hares .I would rather take one daytime hare than 40 at night bu
  16. Mate -I would be interested to know how you supervise a dog under ground as its totally on its own ,or should be .Do you mean you choose the earth carefully which is good practise for a pup .Keep them winning at any age ,within reason and the seed is sown for a good career .Some strains of terrier are notorious for early starting whereas some are annoyingly late .A good stockman will know when to enter to proper work by the way the pup is around others and the willingness to show interest when taken out to watch others at work .A pup that is continually testing its elders ,and I mean boisterou
  17. So you think that going self employed will stop you working .Wrong. Just sign on mate .This working lark is vastly overrated I can tell you .
  18. Shot it yesterday evening .I was asked to check on a patch of young trees as there had been a complaint of extensive fraying to young aspens .Walked into the wind to a spot overlooking these plantings and expected to see a young buck ,new to the area .I spied the back of a roe ,head pushed into the hedge and obviously a buck by the shape of the white ass patch .It was not the young buck but a mature one judging by the heavy hind quarters .The head gear was not on show at that time so I waited .A doe pranced out of the hedge which took the attention of the buck and he reversed to take a look .T
