When I was younger ,I took on a pest control job at a duck farm .The owner was loaded ,the rats plentiful and we settled for a pound a rat -against my mentors advice at the time -Too cheap he said.We arrived on the stated day when they were to move the ducks out of one shed ,ready for a new crop .We turned over the dung with forks and let the terriers kill the rats.We were well into 200 plus when the owner poked his head around the door and asked how we were getting on."200 my god" was the reply to which Frank said "we'd better stop then" .The owner looked around and saw we'd only done a quart

Basically a good system but the collar does need strenthening like Darcy said .Takes a bit of getting used to after the old grey boxes. The noise is piercing and may betray a dig in the wrong place  .The bright colour is a bonus though and once use to it there is rarely the wandering about trying to get over a mark as the directional arrows and pip-pip lead you to the dog .We have found they lie a bit when directly over a dog,but not too much. They also work with the old collars if necessary.

Excellent mate .You obviously keep good records .

A few have said they like to keep a dog fit all year round and I agree.By fit I mean capable of doing a nights lamping all year round .Just as an athlete needs to acclimatise to hot weather so does a running dog . Obviously the performance is different in the warmer months but it makes the winter nights easier on the dog if its used to a bit of muscle work before hand.Road work is no substitute for running as it does not stretch muscles or diaphram.Wrongly or writely I lamp all year round as ground is not a problem to me .I have the lamping on several golfcourses where the grass is watered in

Took these a while ago .Perfect camoflage .

Nothing wrong with tinned meat mate .Go for a decent brand though like pedigree chum .You will have to feed more of it and it will cost more ,but nothing wrong with the content .The change from raw to tinned is nowhere near as severe as raw to complete mate .

What ,fishing for fish with a fishing rod .No chance !

It depends to a certain degree on how you leave the place .We always make good with branches over the tube before backfill ,even in stop ends .The added bonus is that you arnt scratching about for the last bit of soil to make good .Weve had 9 from an earth by a slurry pit ,10 if you include the original occupant . All winter foxes .

squeeking in foxes... no joy

Well its not as simple as that mate they see a lot of freshly killed ones 1st and are run with another dog at the beggining. You agree that its not the cubs that test them but a hard biting adult,IMHO when a dog gets hit hard by a fox if its going to quit it will quit it doesnt matter how many cubs its killed. I can understand the passion for hunting and a real need to get out there,Ime bored stiff and irritable I dont like the heat and my eyes are itching with a high pollen count, but to go out killing cubs just for the craic is a bit much. Most of us put up with the boredom and heat and sit in -
2 down ,a litter to go .

The keeper accounted for 3 the following morning and I got 2 last Friday .Job done . Seems the currant trend on here at the moment ,especially on the dog boards, is to condemn the culling of summer foxes .Pest control is an all year round thing with us ,never let up ,one keeper says or you will find a wheel barrow load of poults .[which can and does still happen ,but not too often we hope .]Like I said on the lurcher board ,the keepers respect no close season on any vermin and when you are fortunate enough to be in their trust then neither do I .A keeper was sacked around us last year becaus -

putting ducks on a pond??
Squirrel_Basher replied to thurso jack's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
If the ducks are intended to act as decoys then buy some call ducks .They are mostly white and should not get shot :icon_redface:They are noisy little ducks and attract mallard from afar . -
A routine look out for a keeper found these 2 wandering near the rearing field .Shot the vixen first at half light .She came belting in to a squeak from the hand .Knocked her over at no more than 30 yds .Phoned the keeper to let him know there was a litter nearby and he said he would deal with the cubs as he had an idea where they were .Jokingly, he said he would be pleased if I could get the dog before I went to bed ? Walked over to the far side of the rearing field and shone the lamp as it was now too dark to see .A fox was sat under an oak tree at about 150 yds and a look through the scope

Well if your hunting foxes every week of the year and are killing litters of cubs I would think 100 isnt a figure to get excited about, It says in excess of 100 actually . Old skool- Keepers around us regard every fox /cub as a potential rogue .Its a poor keeper who waits to have trouble before tackling the problem .Im out all year round because around us there is a need for control.Combine this with an overwhelming desire to be out foxing and the scene is set ! Kane says he starts a lurcher on the real ,full grown fox which is admirable but how many lurchers has he actually started -

well said oldskool. Surely aug /sept is early enough to start on cubs/adults.We should have respect for our quarry. Any hunts that did start before the ban in late aug early sept done it to dispers the cubs for the coming season. For those lads with a small patch to go on then maybe a close season is in order .Around us there are farmers who phone me up if they see a fox .I do several keepered places and you try telling a keeper to leave some for the winter .Control is done on every occasion possible and still there are more foxes to take the place of those killed .By various means I ki -

When the going gets harder on the foxes later on ,All you boys with the red filters out now will have nothing to fall back on .The filter is my last resort on lamp shy anything .Do the job right with a white light . Strikes me some of you boys either dont run foxes or dont know what the feck your doing when you do .There is no problem at all entering a dog to cubs .They dont stay cubs forever and as the cubs grow so will the dogs confidence .Some of us that run our dogs all year round ,do so because we cant bear to take a break from the running game not because its any easier on the dog -we j -

Spot on Rob.-Soon as we spot a fox I squeak loudly once to see if its interested .We then crouch down so as not to make such a large outline .Keep the lamp on it all the time but at its feet not in its eyes .I tend to fade the squeak as the fox gets closer so as not to let it pin point our exact location .Check around as Rob says as a better easier target may be running in .Watch the dogs ,they will know of a close fox before you do .When a lurcher is wed to fox ,they are sometimes hard to keep quiet as one approaches .Cover the dogs eyes with your hand until the slip .Also a good ploy if you -
Jimfin -The outer guard hairs are what insulates the inner ,finer hairs mate .Stripping as opposed to clipping only removes the loose and tangled guard hairs and maintains a good insulation. You are lucky its the summer .Hopefully the autumn molt will see him right .

The correct way to preserve a brush is to soak it in meths for a fortnight then shampoo it but this takes away all the foxy smell and becomes just a toy .Supervise pups with tails mate as any lumps of fur pulled off can cause choking .

In my experience -the more riper the bait the better for mink .Fresher stuff tends to catch others of the weasel family ,like stoats .Caught one 3 days running on rabbit paunch followed by a mink the next day .

Im no bird man but is it not bad practice to have vermin coming and going at their leisure .How do you control a birds weight when its time to hunt .
