  3. In one of my positions as a keeper years ago ,I was underkeeper to an arogant, self centred ,tight headkeeper who insisted we did the lamping his way .Not that he came with us ,he just set out the route and we had to stick to it or face a public bollicking in front the boss who knew no better and was afraid of the headkeeper .The foxes soon got used to the frequency of these outings and the route we always took .We shot a few foxes of course but me and the other chap both new we could do much better . What we decide on was to drive the quad near his house at the times he would expect us to pa

  8. Is there anybody on here who is old enough to remember the euston system?,[spelling].The rearing of pheasants by large scale broody hens .I can remember the local estate just finishing with it .It was the underkeepers jobs to shoot rabbits by the hundreds to be boiled down for feed and added to corn .The hens were kept in small boxes and tethered individually to feed .The fronts of the boxes ,if I remember right ,were slatted to let chicks out to scratch about but not big enough to let the hen wander with them . Very labour intensive as someone had to be there 24-7 to kill vermin and shut ch

  12. My thinking is that its half instinct and half reaction to ourselves. The way we react when seeing something or dare I say it ,thinking something ,has a large bearing on what my dogs will or wont chase .For those of you that stick to the same walking route ,try this .Think about turning a different way long before you get there and see what happens .Might just be me and my pack ? When lamping and theres more than one quarry sat together ,think of one specific one and then slip the dog ?. Done right ,the bond between human and dog is stronger than any other .
