  1. Just thought i'd chip in my thoughts as they are far from some of you .I would never ,ever, start a young dog behind, infront or to either side of another dog no matter what .The best way for me is for the dog to enter of its own accord in a small place and dug to as soon as the ground will allow .Dont be too hasty in pulling quarry out once shot as I think this is the road to that sin of all sins when a terrier jumps out as you break in .Let the youngster savour the moment as should you . Preferably an earth that has been marked by an experienced dog should be chosen .This way to me has pro
  2. If the truth was known mate ,we have all read his stories .Taken as just that, stories, they read good but it has to be born in mind they are fiction . Ive seen a very red faced chap at a dig with one of these "direct decendents from so and so "but when asked to use his bitch for the 3rd time that day he slunk away to a bush whereby his phone rang all of a sudden and he was off .Trouble at home or something .Wheres all the pics of these working plummers then? .
  3. Personnally ,I would rather you did the right thing and had him PTS.YOU KNOW AS WELL AS I DO THAT HE WILL BE PASSED FROM PILLAR TO POST AND FINALLY,WELL YOU KNOW WHAT .
  4. If done right ,the aich cut is neat but seeing the carcasses at the dealers, all cut round the ass and very neat , and im determined to start doing this .Its just that ive bought a new knife and im wondering if its too wide in the blade .Its a buck sheath blade .Yes I am a bit of a perfectionist !
  5. Foxhunter -the boys interest is still there but my interest in taking him out has waned somewhat as I spend my time baiting ,untangling him and not fishing myself . Scouser 3038-It a water in Wiltshire mate ,England ,and nearly on my doorstep .I've heard the irish bream are in decline but no doubt someone will put me right on this .
  6. When gralloching do most of you cut through the aich bone or try to trim around the ass.If the trimming is your prefered method ,then what sort of knife do you use as Im struggling to make a neat job .Sorry if this is 2 questions .
  7. Just spoke to our local greyhound chap on the phone and he says this -If the damage is recent and no inflamation has set in then bandage the leg fairly tight 6inches either side the knee, including the knee so the leg is straight .Do this with hot not boiling water soaked bandage .It will need changing 3 times a day for 2 weeks .From then on bandage with dry bandage as before but change once daily .No exercise at all for 3 months .4 months down the line the bandage can be removed and the dog allowed supervised exercise on the lead .The process takes a good year to mend and thats if you catch it
  8. Alimac-Good luck with the coming season mate but dont forget to clip them next year ,think of all the tea breaks you could have whilst saving time walking in ,and then get on here earlier . :clapping: All the best -foxdropper .
  9. Ive been on holiday for a week but judging by the posts it seems not to clip is the in thing .In reply to your pms alimac-Good luck in your venture up north mate .In defence of clipping and the full time keeper -Even a full time or full time team of keepers had more things to do than run around dogging in all evening where I worked , which is why I still advocate it .Any of you keeperes members of the NGO .Ask them about national figures on the subject ? If you want sacasm alimac then what is a full time keeper doing wasting precious daylight ,or any time ,writing on here .Get and dog thos
  10. Like I said ,you are obviously much more experienced than myself and now youve reach that level of experience , theres no need to listen to others . The gamekeeping section requires a mod and I propose you .
  11. Just to add something I've learnt over the years about hedgehogs and this was years ago when most ground dwellers were classed as vermin .The body of a dead hedgehog is irresistable to one of its own kind and was used to clear areas of this egg thief ,draping the body over the tunnel .What i'm saying is never leave the body of a hedgehog near tunnel traps as you will attract more .
  12. The lakes around us are fishing their tits off .Mate had 340lb of bream ,tench in a 12 hour session !
  13. Molly -I agreee that physical chastisement does not always work ,a bucket of water in the dogs face would of nipped it in the bud though .[after seperating the other dog ]Not a half hearted chuck either ,stinging hard . I am cut to the quick that you think I am a chauvanist though so as a punishment I'll ask you not to leave the sink for the rest of the week .
  14. Little lloyd-To lightly clip a bird is to just as well not bother clipping as they will fly just the same ,try it .The first 5 primary feathers must be cut to the growing point or pulled out .The latter encourages regrowth quicker incidently .
  15. MY advice would be to stay away from a second hand .22 and buy new !.
  16. Seen quite a few merlins around us both low level hunting and high overhead in passage .Are they more commen than people have us believe? .
  17. "whats good for the dog is the most important thing "-"Its binx Ive got to think about ". Ladies ,its THIS way of thinking that has got this dog in this habit in the first place .IT IS NOT THE DOG THAT NEEDS TO COME FIRST ,IN ANY SITUATION .LET A DOG CLIMB HIGHER THAN YOURSELF IN STATUS AND PROBLEMS WILL RESULT. I guarantee that dog would not be whimpering or dare to bark in my kennels and yes a bit of physical chastisement would have been involved but ............................. The reasons for the noise and behaviour that you have been given by various people are far too complex.
  18. Stop it drying and getting infected .
  19. Alimac-We have 17 shoots within 20 mile radius and they ALL had clipped early season birds which is what I'm on about .I know this as I helped catch up all their birds and crate them from the local gamefarm .All were clipped by myself and a mate .The percentage was based on feedback from a local college ,lackham college in wiltshire that conducts surveys not based on what happens around you but nationwide .The reason it says "I THINK"in my post is because all data is not in for our area yet but 75 % is the score so far . You are obviously a much more skilled and experienced countryman/k
  20. Alimac -Clipping is practised by ,I would think ,at least 75% of keepers on early, mid season birds but never on lates as they need to be out the pens .The original post ,I think ,applied to a lad trying to release on a small scale where hanging on to birds in a pen for as long as possible is the norm .In my experience if something gets in your pen you are stuffed anyway so that argument dosnt stand up .Hanging on to birds on a small acrerage far outways the small chance of something getting in a pen if constructed propper . Ps Not knocking the way you do things ,just making a point .
  21. A keepers terrier went missing around us about a year ago and was found dead ,stung to death ,whilst digging up a nest of the buggers .
  22. Never heard of a prolapse in a bitch so young but yes thats what it is .If you cant get her to the vets straight away then put some vaseline on it now .Apply with clean hands .You do not want this infected as it means a histerectomy in later life ,if not sooner .
