  1. Seen quite a few merlins around us both low level hunting and high overhead in passage .Are they more commen than people have us believe? .
  2. "whats good for the dog is the most important thing "-"Its binx Ive got to think about ". Ladies ,its THIS way of thinking that has got this dog in this habit in the first place .IT IS NOT THE DOG THAT NEEDS TO COME FIRST ,IN ANY SITUATION .LET A DOG CLIMB HIGHER THAN YOURSELF IN STATUS AND PROBLEMS WILL RESULT. I guarantee that dog would not be whimpering or dare to bark in my kennels and yes a bit of physical chastisement would have been involved but ............................. The reasons for the noise and behaviour that you have been given by various people are far too complex.
  3. Stop it drying and getting infected .
  4. Alimac-We have 17 shoots within 20 mile radius and they ALL had clipped early season birds which is what I'm on about .I know this as I helped catch up all their birds and crate them from the local gamefarm .All were clipped by myself and a mate .The percentage was based on feedback from a local college ,lackham college in wiltshire that conducts surveys not based on what happens around you but nationwide .The reason it says "I THINK"in my post is because all data is not in for our area yet but 75 % is the score so far . You are obviously a much more skilled and experienced countryman/k
  5. Alimac -Clipping is practised by ,I would think ,at least 75% of keepers on early, mid season birds but never on lates as they need to be out the pens .The original post ,I think ,applied to a lad trying to release on a small scale where hanging on to birds in a pen for as long as possible is the norm .In my experience if something gets in your pen you are stuffed anyway so that argument dosnt stand up .Hanging on to birds on a small acrerage far outways the small chance of something getting in a pen if constructed propper . Ps Not knocking the way you do things ,just making a point .
  6. A keepers terrier went missing around us about a year ago and was found dead ,stung to death ,whilst digging up a nest of the buggers .
  7. Never heard of a prolapse in a bitch so young but yes thats what it is .If you cant get her to the vets straight away then put some vaseline on it now .Apply with clean hands .You do not want this infected as it means a histerectomy in later life ,if not sooner .
  8. I didnt like to say so ,but that is how I read it too .Defra are doing their best to stay away from the last fiasco which caused more knock on financial loss than letting the disease run its course. Hopefully it will be nipped in the bud and no great changes to our way of life . Regards foxdropper. Edited to say that Ive just phoned the game dealer and there is no change in our neck of the woods .
  9. Very good read mate. That rifle is a beauty too .Good luck with further outings .
  10. Try digging a hole for the meat bait under the trap with only part showing above ground .Place a treadle trap over it with the bait far side of treadle .Cover the floor of the trap with seived soil so as to leave no mesh showing .Inspect from a distance as constant human scent does nothing for success.Move the trap after a capture as you will not catch another cub in the same location .Right angles to a run are favourite sets or around a release pen .Good luck .
  11. Mate -try rabbit guts and put a pair of live traps back to back as close to the water line as possible .Some sort of artificial lead in is benificial .Mink pads are like small cats with claws out .Young will be dispersing this time of year and it may be a passer by you have seen .
  12. Does this lad need some more in depth advise as surely the basic setting of a trap is in us all . By law they have to be covered, placed in a tunnel or hole, and inspected twice a day.The siting of fenns is best learnt through trial and error as it would take pages to cover every set for all vermin, suffice to say that vermin use natural corridors such as dry stone walls and ditches as well as the runs of their prey .
  13. I suppose your optimism and patience is to be applauded but if any dog dosnt sit right with what I want then its history .No matter what breeding or work it has done .Never forget YOU are the pack leader and as such every dog is below you and thrives on discipline and routine .Sounds like youve already made a rod for your back . PS not wrote to annoy or upset anyone ,just facts .
  14. IME,partridge will do o.k in pheasant pens but need clipping the same as pheasants as they are ,as said ,very flighty .On a small shoot where time is valuable them mix them in to save having to visit two pens .You will need to keep back a pair of call birds though[before they are put in the release pen] and kept nearby in a smaller mesh topped pen .This can be in a clearing around the pen and surrounded with electric wire ,run off the pen .A wire bottem to any partidge pen is advisable to stop predators digging under .
  15. Wiltshire mate .No ban on people movement here according to defra website .
  16. Mateys last post did him NO favours at all .
  17. mate -that avatar is enough to make me jack -myself off .
  18. Byron you perv. lol.Quality pic mate .
  19. I thought hover flies were carnivorous and hunted on the wing, or is this a bonde moment !.
  20. Tina -I hope you will solve your problem but I would not have the patience or desire to work on a dog that did not tow the line .Your not going to like this but -IF the dog comes back and re-offends then for the sake of yours and everyone elses sanity ,have him PTS.Some dogs just do not fit in with what you require and frankly never will . .At the end of the day ,you have to look at things as a whole and if something dosnt fit then remove it but dont pass the dog on to be a problem else where .
