    As im on the list locally as a humane despatcher then heres my take on it .If i get a call ,usually at night ,i ask if the deer is mobile or not .This dictates the weapon i will carry .The weapon is up to me ,my choice including the .410 shotgun .If im not available i can send a mate who can again take whatever weapon he likes excluding air obviously .A shot to the head with anything cartridge wise will humanely despatch deer .I can enter any property when accompanied by a copper who does not need to notify the landowner .The landowner is notified to arrange recovery of the carcass by council

    If you are intending to use the same pen this year do not lime or anything else this close to the poult season .treat after this years crop has gone through .

    Darcey mentions feeding the cubs but from experince its not a good thing for their welfare .If they eat too much of what you give them and take no notice of what the vixen brings she may bring less and less for them as nature dosnt like being messed with .Happened to a litter i was watching /feeding and the cubs withered visually as time went on and i was forced to step up the feeding against my better judgement until they left for pastures new .

    Had an invite to stalk a piece of ground that i know well .My host asked me to stalk over a patch of scrub on a hanging that lead up to fields of mowing grass which i could take in if time allowed. Hes seen a decent buck here and like a real gentleman he wanted to put me on it .The orders were to shoot any yearlings seen as well because the place is crawling with them now.     Cracking evening with just the just the right mix of sun and breeze ,just enough to be aware of both .Got to the ground in plenty of time to have a walk around just incase a buck was out his seat early .Saw only does until a youngster ran away two fields lower in a valley ,a pricket that wasnt for stopping .Stalked down to where he disappeared and stalked into two more does.     Its not over til i say so ,lol.Looking at the fors and against ,and i realise its no real poll only a summary of the thread, but the against far outway the fors and from some very experienced non dmq holders too .The diagrams you lads swear by are flawed ,seriously in some cases but you wont dare look or feel inside a deer to prove otherwise just incase the bible is wrong .It appears certain AW's wet nurse their students through to a pass ,scoring points with the board no doubt for a high pass rate.What is apparent is that you blokes spend too much time thinking about best practice than doing

    Someone will no doubt know but i think there are no laws concerning photography within the realms of non invasive. Nice pics mate ,bet you wont see the young fledge as they are out and gone in seconds .One minute the adults are to and fro ,the next you hear whistles down stream from the scattered brood.

    The heart lung shots on shot placement 2 on the link concerns a beast 3/4 on .Please dont try pulling the wool John because ive been around too long . Square broadside ,the shoulder blade is forward of the vitals,you know it ,i know it end of .

    Hit in the right place yes but a bit forward and your in trouble.The right place being just behind the blade when the leg is straight down . The shoulder is a big area and no amount of pursuading will tell me thats a preferred shot in any light . 'Dying very quickly indeed' covers a broad time frame and not the instant dead on its feet that im used to .If a beast still has a flicker in the eye then i consider it a bad shot .

    I never for one moment thought you meant shooting a leg out John but the shoulder blades are not a kill area either .Trauma and blood loss is what you are relying on with that shot as well as a lack of mobility which dosnt sit right for me .The lungs ,heart sit immediately BEHIND the front shoulder blade ,have a look next time you open one up .Trachea is in line but thats all .

    Posted 14 May 2010 - 07:57 AM -Wireviz Pinning a deer is to shoot it through the front shoulders there for making sure it dose not travel from the spot even if it doesn't die right off .Most roe will still wheel barrow a bit but not much. The reason for this is they have floating shoulders (no socket) This still gives them some movement. Nice shot and well done to the client.     ...................and this is in the name of best practice i take it .The more i hear about the manual you chaps regard as the bible ,the more i want to do things the way i was taught.Shooting a beast through the front legs so it dosnt kill it outright but dosnt go on too far ,absolutely diabolical and shows a distinct lack of disregard for the quarry and greed on the part of the rifle holder shooting in low light.If i was told to 'pin' a deer like this the answer would be f**k off . There are no major organs in that part for a kill which makes this unnacceptable to me .

    Down at Martins yesterday evening for a stalk and as usual he never failed with the buck .Scanning a valley, where he has a cracking bit of ground ,we spotted a buck and doe about 350 -400 yards away from our parking position .Martin said to take it from here as long shots are the modern way to go apparently ,lol.I declined, naturally, as thats not my forte'.Walked down to the stream and stalked up and around a rise to get somewhere handy.I crawled to a mound that commanded a good view and could see our victim bedded in the long grass .Martin had the video camera that we hoped to get a bit of

    Maybe im missing something or maybe its just local dialect but if i was told to pin an animal it would mean to me that a instant ,on the spot kill was neaded .Neck shot maybe which clearly didnt happen as he ran on into the drop off .If ive got things wrong then sorry but thats the way i see it mate .

    Sorry John for lowering the tone on your thread but i feel the need for a rant .This chap is either very deluded or an out an out bullshitter ,havnt made my mind up yet .He may be from Europe but stalking is stalking the world over and you only get to feel for young in a dead doe!Roe moult in Europe too so why the quiz on body condition .Somethings not right here . Good footage there mate showing great field craft on your part and that of your client ,who could of ruined the moment very easily .
