  1. Tried a place that i rarely go these days as i have plenty to get around and tend to overlook the smaller farms.Glassing is very much from field to field here as its very flatand high hedges .Walked up the lane away from the buildings and spotted a young doe straight away ,Managed to stalk in to about 40yds before she clocked me but good practice anyway .She ran off to the right and through a hedge ,bumping another deer as she did so the other side .Onwards and spied another two does picking at a hedge ,trying for those bits just out of reach like they do .A nice six pointer joined them from

  6. There appears to be a lot of adults around our way this year, just hope the spawning season was equally as kind this year .These pics are of some i found whilst hand digging a garden ,25 in total, amonst the weeds i removed .All removed to a safer spot in a wood . Seeing loads at night as well, unfortunately on the roads.
  7. I do believe larsens were invented long after this trapping method was outlawed.
  8. Youve definately got the knack with that camera Hannah ,excellent pics there, and good to see hes still around and growing well too .
  9. My own thought is that the rut this year will be sooner than the usual late July early August in the south. Im seeing bucks following does with necks outstretched now which is out of sinc a bit .Bucks patrolling were at it weeks ago when they wernt last year .The kid crop was definately early with us and ive even seen a pair of twins out of spot today . Yours predictions welcome .
  10. Someone whos head is even further up their own arse than the chap taking the test ,shouldnt be hard amongst the best practice brigade, and a good understanding of the English language would help .Fancy spelling porkfolio wrong.
  11. Excellent thread lads .Anyone ever modified a fenn mk 4 ?

  13. From experience mate ,the older bucks tend to be the last ones out of cover of an evening though this is by no means a hard and fast rule as we found out . Pressure or lack of it plays the biggest part i think second to weather .In areas such as we have with just hedges then a buck can be found at any time in the same place roughly ,its just knowing where they are so you dont bump them .We start stalking after tea roughly which gives us a chance at the yearling bucks which are much more prone to wandering this time of year ,therefore up on their feet earlier.
  14. Deer will eat rape flower all day long mate ,seen them doing it.
  15. As you well know mate luck is something you make for yourself.Timing is the key to success in this game .
  16. It was a young buck with nothing to get excited about mate ,purely a cull.Good write up mate ,see you soon.
  17. As im on the list locally as a humane despatcher then heres my take on it .If i get a call ,usually at night ,i ask if the deer is mobile or not .This dictates the weapon i will carry .The weapon is up to me ,my choice including the .410 shotgun .If im not available i can send a mate who can again take whatever weapon he likes excluding air obviously .A shot to the head with anything cartridge wise will humanely despatch deer .I can enter any property when accompanied by a copper who does not need to notify the landowner .The landowner is notified to arrange recovery of the carcass by council
  18. If you are intending to use the same pen this year do not lime or anything else this close to the poult season .treat after this years crop has gone through .
  19. Darcey mentions feeding the cubs but from experince its not a good thing for their welfare .If they eat too much of what you give them and take no notice of what the vixen brings she may bring less and less for them as nature dosnt like being messed with .Happened to a litter i was watching /feeding and the cubs withered visually as time went on and i was forced to step up the feeding against my better judgement until they left for pastures new .
  20. Good do there mate and nice buck as well
  21. Had an invite to stalk a piece of ground that i know well .My host asked me to stalk over a patch of scrub on a hanging that lead up to fields of mowing grass which i could take in if time allowed. Hes seen a decent buck here and like a real gentleman he wanted to put me on it .The orders were to shoot any yearlings seen as well because the place is crawling with them now. Very hot evening with hardly a breath of air .Up on the top of a banking i spied a muntie but orders are orders and i watched it pick daintily through the scrub before diasappearing in some nettles .A doe came through to
  22. Very strange and interesting head that John and one of a kind i know .Any guesses as to age ?
  23. Cracking evening with just the just the right mix of sun and breeze ,just enough to be aware of both .Got to the ground in plenty of time to have a walk around just incase a buck was out his seat early .Saw only does until a youngster ran away two fields lower in a valley ,a pricket that wasnt for stopping .Stalked down to where he disappeared and stalked into two more does. By now the sun was losing a bit of colour and i suggested we head back to where local knew of a buck that he wanted to remove.Got to the spot and settled in ,spying two does out under a clump of hawthorn on an oppos
