I've been waiting for dogs to be mentioned Personally, i would rather see ANY deer [and i often accompany my mate on a stalk] being ran by a dog, than shot at...... deer cant out-run a .243 .................But then again dogs arnt selective like us ,in season or out it matters not to a lurcher .

  10. Invite down to Martins this evening and to a place near the Mendips that he has .Cracking evening with sunshine and a bit of breeze that obliged by blowing the right way for a change. Arrived at 1800 ,parked up and headed out to the small fields on the boundary that were covered in freshly spread slurry! I made a mental note that we wouldnt see anything here but just as well i never said anything because approaching the boundary i stopped dead to watch not one but five does single file away through the hedge .No buck attending so no worries there .Good ,however to see them this end of the gro

  12. My own feelings are this -We are told the conservatives will hold a free vote on the hunting ban ,i bet that will never happen if they get in ,just a scinical guess .They vow to tighten up our borders ,something which is out of their hands anyway and is controlled by the EU.We are obiged to take in our quota of misfits .We cannot get out the mess we are in when we are told what to do by outsiders. If everyone on here voted for one of the extremist parties it would help send a message that weve had enough big time .The hunting ban can stay as it is ,its never bothered me or anyone i know and fe
  13. Moorhens are not quite the innocents you may think .Its long been known amongst breeders of widfowl that moorhens will drown ducklings for no apparent reason ,something i have seen myself whilst fishing. They will eat grain intended for other species and turn an area of crops near a pond into a mud flat with their constant searching for insects .This in no way adds any weight to cull them out of season but does put them in perspective. Most living creatures have the ability to become pests at some time, especially in numbers .

  21. The other side of the coin -The trouble with a small acreage is that roe are seasonal browsers, picking at what is best at any one time on or near your ground . I would say make the most of what you do have and shoot whatever you like within reason .Nature will fill that vacuum quicker than any plant will grow i can assure you . Land management is a full time job and out the reach of a man not on the ground permanently .To dabble here and there is to do just that .Roe tend to hammer what they find tasty ,ask any market gardener, hence a small patch of anything wont last long . Obviously the big
