heavy round nosed shovels
Squirrel_Basher replied to mid.land.err's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
No need for anything specialist mate .Buy a builders shovel in the full steel shafted version and cut the blade to your liking .Thats what we all do and youll never break it . -
Get it deactivated and on the wall that way you can put the money you saved into buying useful .410 carts ,lol.

A bit harsh i know but to my mind if a man cant do this one last thing for a trusted companion then its a poor show .Just dig the hole first .

Does and kids in which order?
Squirrel_Basher replied to gerfalcon's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
I would say no hard and fast rules in any situation .The size and apparent condition of the followers would be the overriding factor in my choice but to get numbers you HAVE to shoot the doe first there is no alternative .I have taken many followers being one of two with the knowledge that the survivor will do better .Yeld does are a preference but not always apparent ,with followers unseen nearby sometimes . As said ,shoot a doe and then wait or shoot a follower and see the others scamper off not to return . The lie of the land would be a factor too .If the doe was a marginal shot to start w -
Binocular harness, what d'you recommend?
Squirrel_Basher replied to Tyla's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
Maybe some of the guys are thinking too much here mate .A bino harness is just that , a harness .Binos arnt heavy now so please dont spend just because its the 'in' thing .I have a harness from USA ,redhead and its lasted 15 years with no probs .I couldnt go back to the bloody things swinging round the neck on a strap but like i said you dont have to go overboard . -
Called in to a place this morning where theres a small shoot trying to get up and running and one of the things they are up against is the deer pulling at the maize cover crops .Theres no-where near enough of this for my liking but thats another story but what they have got is getting eaten ,flattened and lead on .Beautiful morning with decent sun rise ,seen better but what can you expect in winter . Stalked down the left hand side of the land to get the wind right but i knew it would change as i got lower by the river .Never got that far though as a scan revealed a doe lead in tight to the

Just like to say Thank You

Perhaps we'll see a topic by gir- falcon before the winters out ,a hunting topic that we can all benifit from but i wont stay in and wait for it as it'll be a long time coming .Likes to talk but cant walk the walk does old Geeky pill . The signs of a messer are all around you ,just been informed by pm that you aint so rosey either . -
Still stand by the fact that no man has the right to criticize another having not done it .This chap bases his condemnation on the ill effects of a few encounters with fallen deer that were or were not taken with a lurcher ,could of been the farm cur for all he knows .Too many laws based on this sort of sketchy fact and too many self appointed judges critisizing those whos passion is different to his own .What ever way you dress it up Geeky Phill, you are a bigot of the highest order ,something you probably relish but not one id care for .That alleged shot over the boundary you refer to has ye

Any man that hunts needs not answer to any other man on the ethics of his chosen sport .The lurcher versus gun debate has gone on for years before any of you chose to champion the facts and will go on long after you are gone .If a man chooses either then its fine by me .Shows a great deal of bigotry in condemning anything you dont fully understand and unless you partake in something then your views are of little concern to those who have .The right to speak out immediately looses weight the moment the reader realises this . Just because a law is passed does not mean its justified only that t

All very well talking ballistics and carcass damage but what the lad needs to do is buy both .No one cal is an allrounder ,legally anyway so why be tied to the the one rifle .Just save up for the hmr then the .222 when ready ,simple .

Our local market does one for tenner and in realtree if needed .

Those that know me will know i have the utmost respect for quarry both alive and dead .What i try to show is as it is,the truth , real life and rugged .Animals do die tidily sometimes when shot but in the main most dont and i wouldnt insult the memory of an individual by altering its form in death .I used to be an avid lurchermen and still work terriers but the lurchers have been overtaken by the gun in my list of priorities .I can honestly say ive taken nearly every species of runable game there is so please no preaching , the passion has dwindled but not gone .I still go out with a few m

Out last night with local Yokel ,his 223 and i took the .22 along as theres a few lepatiods about .Went to a very small place of only 3 fields but turned out to be a good move .The first two fields were shit spread with not much hope really but i spotted an eye up against the far hedge with the red filter and getting closer we i.d it as charlie.Off sticks Local had him at about 60 yds .Good start so onwards .The next field was shit free and the rabbits here were concentrated in this field it seemed and i set about them with the rimmy knocking over 10 before we left the place .Only 2 got aw
