    asked me that 18 month ago and i would have said yes! 110% in my wee dog........i had/have a dog that a few on hear have seen she worked rock and earth and worked and bolted fox/mink and a few other things over her 6 years of working and she was used a lot for what i wanted her for, she bayed non stop for hours if needed and VERY rarely got a mark on her she had a few bad ones but she tryed her little heart out..and being small i would often get a call from other keepers to put her in where theirs couldent/wouldent fit,,, and if working watery earths she would be neck deep in water baying lik

    Losing a life or getting lost as you put it is a far cry from spewing . You talk of dogs in the past tence .Tell me mate ,honestly have things changed so much in your kennels that you cant trust a dog to put in a 100% guaranteed performance .

    So none of you have a dog you could take anywhere and be 100% confident in .IM TALKING EARTH WORK NOT ROCKS BALES OR TREES before anyone pipes up .Sad state of affairs that .Some terriers dont inspire confidence but others dont deserve the doubt admitted on here .Sort your kennels out for the new year and bury the shite .

    Like said ,do your hand feeding in the morning ,keep an eye on whats being eaten and adjust to suit and it will reduce the need to dog in by half .Better birds hanging round to glean the last than wondering full crop .Rake up straw regularly as old damp stuff not only harbours vermin but can create respiratory probs too .Run a few fenns to the side in the open ,covered obviously and never shoot vermin on the ride itself .This should be the area bids are most at ease .We used split maize ,wheat ,barley and sun flower seed mix but money was no object there .Keep the sides of the rides cut low or

    You have to ask yourself why anyone is selling a worker in the first place .A terrier should never be treated as a machine but there are many out there that come very close ,bomb proof .

    Can only reply from own experience mate .We are weekend only now but i wouldnt like to think upping the work would cause any spewing but never know .

    3 farms locally under water .A drive round the lanes and full ditches tells me drive on from past experience but did get a dig today in sand but only 3 ft deep on a hill .

    The last dig you had to a dog is all you can ever judge it by is often quoted but once a dog is in the swing of it and dosnt get sickened then its usually on the road to a good career.Dosnt answer you question but thats my take on it .

    You need to dig the back of the hole level with the front at least as far back as the spoil needs to go .Do this before you start and in conjuntion with a bigger hole youll be ok .Also we like to put a step in it at that depth .Dont allow anyone to walk around the edges either .Sounds a fuss but we dig it all the time here with the added two layers of stone we have locally to contend with .Saying all that you did the right thing to lift bitch when you did .

    Where were all those call out dogs we hear of when all this was going on. lol. Apprentiship served and taken on board in this era but thank god for locators. Some of the worst stuff to locate without a finder is sand i think .Nearly lost my life after a cave in due to tunnelling too far on a tip near us that is long since capped over .Hearing the dog,the temptation was always to tunnel that bit further .I still shudder now think of the blackness and pressure .Only the strong arms of my uncle that saved me .Nowadays its a hole straight to it .

    Excess protein fed is pushed out the back end, sometimes in the form of scours .Basically its 25 % or there abouts for moderate work increased when the workload increases to 30% no more and 18-20% in the summer for maintenance.Balance the diet to suit the needs

    The Op asks if its a good idea to be able to call your dog out .As a digging man that likes to test before breeding i find it an alien practice ,a weekness in both dog and man but then thats just me .To want a bolt is also alien to me so to wish to create or own such a dog to facilitate such is alien too .The advocaters of such practice will never know the satisfaction of consistently digging to a dog no matter what the depth,the same as i will never appreciate the dog that comes away in whatever circumstance . I do worry about the future though which is why i may get a bit passionate about
