Break in the wind and rain this evening so had a look out on a farm nearby .Main reason was to scout for any fox earths being used as farmer is lambing now but none found .Talked a while to the farmer who said there was a muntie buck kicking about near the farm and he wouldnt mind a bit of venison if i should see it .Walked the whole farm and next door with out seeing anything except canada geese pairs ,loads of them near the river .Back to the farm near dark and there is the buck on the ass of a doe.Managed the pair from about 90 yds off sticks .

Thanks ,an honest post .You are right about genetic lineage from the start playing a key factor in preservation which I won't knowingly go too far from what I have . -

When you say you ran a line of 1st cross and second cross mate are you referring to a succession of first cross ,2nd cross matings bred for purpose or do you mean 1`,2,3,4 gens etc of first cross,2nd cross breeding true . -

No expert but just asking .How many ,on average would you cull from a litter in the past .Has this number declined as the line progresses ,stayed pretty much the same or have there been more culls in recent litters .Were the parents from the same line or brought together to create a new line as it were .Are you expecting more from this litter than its capable of producing ie Has the bitch produced anything decent before .Just because a bitch is an outstanding worker does not mean she can pass that on by a long way .Has the sire been put to any of her like ,sisters mother etc .If the line is es -
Farmer usually get 3 or 4 cuts here depending on amount of sun but early for here though .Usually first cut middle of May .Spoke to farmer earlier and those cubs were out playing day after it was cut in broad daylight .He sees vixen daily he says carrying afterbirth back from next farm . :bad:Found another cubbing den on another farm with the remains of 3 muntjac fawns outside .These ones may have to be moved as farmers wife likes her poultry .

We dont usually see them that size until June tbh so i make these born before xmas .
-
i spotted the cub before he saw me and lead out low .It was only the phone that scared him off i think .Last year ,two fields away i called in 4 cubs and one came to within a couple feet until i laughed .A lot to learn at that age lol.
-
Squeaked both .Second vid not very clear im afraid ,into the sun .Glorious sunrise today ,loads of wildlife seen early .Two badgers ambling back ,those cubs and a handful of deer ,just not a shooter buck .The earth is over a banking where second cub went .First cub was a good 200 yds from earth if same litter which i thought they were .Looks bigger than it is in vid as it came very close ,only 8ft from me lead down .

They Don't Half Grow Fast!
Squirrel_Basher replied to fox digger's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Would you say that from the same litter. The bullys would be more inclined to be hard and prefer to mix it a bit. And the bullied would be more of a baying type. No mate .No corrulation here at all .Depends on what the dog is made of ,its breeding and how its worked .Take away the bully influence though and a pup is much happier ive found .Its just a personal thing i do as i hate bullying in any form and id like to think it impacts on their lives by removing same.My pet hate in pups is the cowering type that pisses itself when scolded or wont come when called and this is what i aim to rem -
Looks like one of Morts beddy crosses lol.

The reason you half breed is to breed truer to type a few generations later, possibly why i went the Fell route that had Beddy ancestry and not to a coloured terrier that did not, would not and could not further the breed .History learnt some of us that breed towards work, from workers, towards a type that throws type, from workers, that are a type of terrier will eventually produce a terrier of a certain type that grafts. If it fails to produce grafters,if it fails to throw to type, then advertise them on here at £400 a pop and they will soon find a fitting kennel. How many shall i put you down for?. -

I agree with whatever works ,that is only my way and food for thought as they say .I would also agree its owners that mess up good breeding .I disagree though , that runts ever do anything worthwhile though but would depend on whats expected from it i guess.I like to produce evenly sized ,tempered bitches and dogs and i know vanity kicks in when and if a runt appears causing its demise .In the right hands ,shy pups do go on to become decent workers but why create that shyness if it can be avoided. King .......You mention the wild and you are right about dominance carried through to adulthood -
They Don't Half Grow Fast!
Squirrel_Basher replied to fox digger's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
When the accepted time of 7 to 8 weeks has arrived and pups are chosen from litters kept together ,the first pups forward are generally those having beat their sibblings into submition with the beaten staying back having learnt the hard way .These beaten pups are often last to be picked by new owners .The outcome I prefer is to see evenly matched pups all coming forward and given the chance they deserve without a poor start .In unseperated litters ,as pups go to new owners ,dynamics change and lesser ranked individuals rise to the fore but the beaten stays beaten .I noticed this years ago an -

I think a pup bullied will have a different outlook on life from the start and may become withdrawn .A whole litter boisterous is another thing but a stronger pup in a litter will always better any smaller ,that's nature .If there's space I like to seperate the litter in two at least at around 4 to 5 week mark and let bitch into both if they still need her .Have seperated as young as 3 weeks because of bullying and kept one on his own .Everyone will have different views on this but that's mine . -
Others may take the piss Mole but in my experience you are far from the norm .Loads of lads make do for whatever reason ,lack of contacts or just pure lazy .You also did right thing leaving your bitch there for few days to get get her covered more than once .Hope she takes and the next gen are workers too .

Good write up mate .I expect ill dust that big un for you next time down as is the custom lol.Keep thinking about the farmer mate ,he hates them .

Dogging In Dogs
Squirrel_Basher replied to Hands of Stone's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
Depends how you treat your dogging sessions .Some I've known just let dogs run riot thinking it doesn't matter but others treat it as if they were trialling. One of the best I used was a HPR of the steady type that had the knack of flushing the right way .Any dog used needs a certain amount of recall and direction or the whole thing becomes a waste of time .Depends on what time available too .For a short manic session you won't beat a spano but a ride round on the quad far boundary could utilise a young lab .Most keepers use same dogs for dogging in as on shoot days .
