  1. She is getting on 5 1/2 months old now, Loving her ferrets and ferreting. She knows we are after rabbits and i am rather impressed with the nose on her, she has bailed off after some rabbits a few times i cannot wait till she is on the foxes im sure she will be a good dog. You gotta hate our lawn though, bloody drought
  2. Nice one Hornhunter. I really appreciate that, i like the look of those rocks, i will experiment with things like that myself. Rain has been very scarces latley. We are in bad drought so if i know its not going to rain i use pan covers like that, If it has been raining or looks like it may rain i use these Underalls, Thanks again mate,
  3. Its good to see some more trapping pics getting up on here. Now i am new to this trapping so i thought i would post up some pictures of how i make my set. Mainly so Hornhunter can tell me what im doing wrong And so others can see the direction in which my trapping takes here in Australia. Steel Jawed traps are Illeagle for use in NSW that includes Laminated and Offset jaws like Hornhunter uses. I like the point that hornhunter stated, That his Offset Laminated traps cause less harm than Rubber padded traps. If only someone with experience made our laws! Anyways, I use Victor Sof
  4. Terrible stuff the 1080, Its basically a peice of meat laced with poisen. After a few weeks the poisen can wear off and degrade, when the target or NON TARGET animal eats it its not powerfull enough to kill them so they are suffering for weeks.
  5. Chay, Who do you think you are coming on here and wishing an animal will get out of that trap and mame someone. You need to get your facts right and do some research before you come on here all un educated and have a go. A drag is a device used to cause less harm to a powerful animal. Instead of ripping and pulling and damaging his limb when he is permenantly staked. They are only used by the best of trappers who know what they are doing. Being able to read signs and track down the animal. Traps are checked early in the morning and animals are left in the traps for the most min
  6. Get onto Woodga, and get his snaring DVD. Also read Glen Waters Snaring information. And if you can get your hands on a copy of "Learning The Game" It has glenn waters teaching Phil snaring alot of rabbits. Very good information, Good luck with your snaring
  7. Where abouts do you place your foothold on the double dirthold sets mate? Is it one trap per hole?
  8. Alot of people use Penut Butter, i have caught some in the roof with the spring traps. You should look into snaring, if they are not taking the bait you may be able to snare them. PegandGun has some awsome pictures of rat snaring, if you do a search you will find them
  9. Look for there poo piles, these indicate feeding areas. I have found a foolhold trap burried under these with some carrot around is a good way to catch. I have the same trouble as you, short grass hard to see runs. If you find there warren, or hedge, i have found the runs going into it are more visible to see, pick you small beat and set on the middle and you will catch them. Have you ever tried 7x7 Wire Rope for your possum snares? ,
  10. Hello Trapperman, Good to have you on here. You can help me with my foothold trapping He is using 6 stranded brass snares there are some proffesional snareman on here who use these and i have done a little snaring and they deffinatley are the chop. They are made from brass spun into 6 strands with an eyelet in one end, And are fixed to the "Tealer" (support wire) through an eye spun in the tealer. The snare wire then has a double knot in its end. Forming a swivel. Read this and im sure you will be on your way to catching some rabbits, http://www.thehunting
  11. Location is probably the biggest. I am only a learner in this game, but i have noticed that putting your trap in the right spot has a higher chance of catching a fox than putting it somewhere a fox isnt going to be, no matter what the bait is. Woodga on here is good with those cage traps, I am sure he will direct you in the right direction.
  12. Checking the traps agian today, I had another vixen. This vixen had been tormenting me for the past 3 nights by digging my trap up and stealing my bait. Well not this time, after consulting a mate who seems to know the game well i relayed out my set and she was waiting for me the next morning. Now i know this picture isnt the most exiting, but i keep forgetting to take the camera when checking My staghound was very intruiged. and now i smell like a fox, :11:
  13. Checked this morning, Had a nice little vixen waiting for me. Trap was placed near a dam that i new the foxes would come to , to have a drink. I think the vixen had the dog with her, because i saw another fox running away. I know Wild Dogs here will not come back to a trap site if they have seen this happen to there freind. Will foxes?
  14. They are good traps. I checked this morning to see old charly about 200 mtrs from my trap set hunting away. I am suprised the foxes have not came in to eat this calf which i have layed two traps near the carcass. Im sure they will sooner or later, I put out another 3 today found a nice fresh sloppy fox scat near some old cow carcasses and i place two traps in the vicinity of the carcass. Im still learning alot about using these footholds i wish i had someone to show me, I think the key is set location and knowing where the fox regularly patrols. When you blokes arrive at a farm, wh
  15. Hello again, Well today I aquired some trapping permission for canines, and a few felines. Very happy i was its beautiful countryside on a lovley dairy farm. I went out this arvo with my traps and all my equiptment and ran my first little trapline, I managed to get out 4 traps, using 3 dirthole sets, and one set at a dead calf. Im hoping i will get a few because there are plenty about. Will get some pics up if i do, And do you remember that fox sneaking the eggs from the front of my house? I got the cheaky little bugger Wish me luck for tomorrow, 4 traps 4 foxes
  16. I have just been through the same thing, And i find aslong as the ferrets are well handled they seem to be fine with the dogs. However my pup is abit rough sometimes and loves to play with the ferrets so i get abit worried the ferrets will give her a nip but they are very tolerant with her. I like the milk bowl trick, i have noticed the ferrets are to carried away indulging in the milk to really worry about the pup. After a while they get along fine, its great. I also have my pup broken to the chooks in my backyard. And she still chases birds up the park,
  17. It happens sometimes, It can depend on alot of different things i have noticed, I have noticed if it is windy rabbits are not as eager to bolt. And I have noticed Big old Buck rabbits are stubborn to bolt aswell in some cases. Did you have to dig any? if they dont bolt, and you have to clear them dig em.
  18. Once again, a lovley little post. Its good to see some rabbits being caught. Especially some black ones, I really love a nice cool day to be out ferreting, i dont know what it is but i love a nice cloudy day with some rain. I think its got something to do with being sunburnt all the time. Keep them coming boys, well done
  19. What are you wanting to make? If its fox snares I use 7x7 Wire Rope. Its good stuff for you end stops choose a nut that is appropriate size and hammer it on,
  20. I find it hard to locat the ferret whilst he is moving. If you are struggling to get a sturdy make chances are you ferret is still moving. Wack you finder on search and point it around listening to the pitch of the bleeps. As the pitch increases watch you LED display when the pitch is really high and you LED is saying 8ft or less turn it over to Locate. Now you using it like the MK1 but still with your ear and watching the LED hover around finding the highes pitch. It transmits in a square like the MK1 but the square is a little bigger. As i go left to right i listen for the pitch th
  21. Mate if she is from last years kits she will be coming into season. From what i have read it is un healthy to leave them in season, so you will have to do something about it. If she is six months i dont think she will be in season so there is no way you can breed her. But if she is i dont think it would be very good for her. Mine are a year old and i have bred 1 of my Jills because its my first batch of kits i dont think i would be good enough to rare a couple of litters so im starting off with 1. A few lads will clear this up for us...
  22. The only problem i have is my dog breaking into the hutches to get there rabbit.
  23. Well done, It looks like a top spot to be catching rabbits. Hows your little lurcher pup coming along
