    FOXES

I am planning on using my 28' Staghound Bitch on Foxes. She is basically a Deer/Grey but i am also seeing abit of Wolfhound influence in her knuckles. What I cant understand is why a dog would run a fox down and then be Killed by a Fox? without fighting back? I could understand this if it was a Puppy, but an experienced fox dog? you think he would know the game. Having said this the foxes down here are not big at all. How big was this Lurcher? On the other hand I have seen a pic of this bloke holding a fox up by the tail. It was a Huge Mother, It probably would have been
  3. Very Good thread mate, I also have similar ground to you. Feck all grass and a few decent runs under some fences, That i can see. However they are too wide for a hole loop too cover. So i need some advice from the Pro's!!! Peg, Woodga and Snareman We know you boys can snare this land so we need some tips My rabbits seem to dig under the Mesh fences but the run is a good 300mm wide What about bushing the snare up? i ave tried this but the wires get knocked. I will try with some stones next time. How do you assess the area you are about to snare? Its a learning game,
  4. How long until you plan to give her a few runs Frank. Im sure she will be a great ferreting dog, I was just watching a few whippets on a DVD and boy those things can fly. After seeing my Staghound chase rabbits and then watch these whippets, They are deadset awsome rabbit dogs. She wont miss many
  5. I have been trying this with my Lurcher, My dog is a deerhound cross but she is no where near as well trained as purdy. However she is getting there, She does all the basics Sit , stay , lay, I can tell her to laydown when she is away from me and she will sometimes. But not when she is in pursuit, Purdy is a good dog because that guy has the experience, I found its only my first hound and there is still a shitload i have to learn. But having said that, the DVD is very informative and it gave me all the essentials i needed to know, like retreiving ect.... I would talk to as many pp
  6. Hey guys, I got 19 wires out today on a nice bit of permission near me. Does anyone ever get the urge to go out and check them at night. Its so hard to overcome but im actually going to resist and do it properly and wait for then morning. But i will get some photos tomorrow hopefully with 10 rabbits, But i have real bad luck of getting sqaut. We didnt get any rain this arvo so i dont think too many will be out, however its a 1/4 moon moon and the clouds are over so she is a dark one, Atleast you will get to see some ground i gotta snare.
  7. Nice one moley, This looks like a good thread. What about spotting the harder beats? Anyone have tips for this. Alot of my ground is bare earth too slight grass 10mm high max
  8. Well done mate, you are doing rather well. That last pic doesnt look like it was the easiest rabbit to snare. Have you got out on the open runs yet? Keep up the good work, and keep the pics coming
  9. Im sure these fellas know there snaring back to front, i wouldnt question them. Just listen and learn
  10. Woodgas DVD doesnt show the beats too distinctly. What helps me is to look for the longer grass in the runs, then look next to it either side you should see the beats here
  11. When i was first starting out, I couldnt catch squat i had alot of problems with the Frying Pan, like you described. What I was doing was setting them In Between the beats. But you set them on a small beat directly in the middle. And i cannot beleive how much more successful this way is. I have very few knocked wires now,
  12. Nothing wrong with the Mk3, I have noticed the depths can be out i think it depends on the soil. But i still have been digging spot on,
  13. I would not bush up the snare, A wary fox will see this and turn around, keep it simple. If you get some fencing wire use it as a tealer to allow the snare to completley cover the run take note of the grass and look as to where to fox would come through. You can even use a stick beneath the snare to lift the foxes head into the loop.
  14. Good stuff buddy, And nice looking gloves there. Where abouts in Aus are you from? You will always get the odd rabbit to slip the nets I put up with it for a while then when the time was right and i had the money i got myself a hound to help with the ferreting, Keep your eye out for a little whippet will be a good little help
  15. Good thread!, I must say you are all spoilt with all those rabbits and nice grass!! look what I have to put up with, And i love every minute of it !
  16. Well I have been out with the pig dogs and this thread has had alot of attention. Its a different story out here, Hares can be a real pest and so are rabbits and foxes. We need every method possible to control these animals. So i try to do it proffesionally and humainly. There is not problem with snaring hares, there are plenty around my way and they are far to good to be caught by anything down here. My lurcher is just a pup and has had a few runs but has been blown out of the water by the sheer speed of the hares. The point is, Going out and snaring a few hares here and ther
  17. If you want to learn fox snaring i suggest you get your hands on some that have been made by professionals and copy them. You could also try getting your hands on some dvd's or if your lucky get out with someone who knows what they are doing. Snares arnt things you just put anywhere, im only learning still but it is good fun mate, and very effective in the right hands. Just be sensible about it, 7x7 is the aircraft cable i use, and yes a swivel is definate with snaring on open runs. But i dont think they do much on fence snares??? some one will correct me,
  18. well done teejay, there just isnt too many hares around here so i dont think i could get that many, I wouldnt be able to snare if it wasnt for woodga
  19. Nice looking hound mate, How does he go on rabbits
  20. This is my first hare, i have had a few hare snares out and was rather happy with my first result. It was only about as big as a rabbit cant wait to get some real big ones. You can see the run behind him and it was set on a nice beat about 7 1/2 - 8 ' high, Im getting the hang of this snaring and the more i do the easier i find it becomes. Really Enjoying it ,
