  1. Yes Steve...........its a cut-down Spud-Thistle as we called them in these parts.........if you have one just cut it down to a foot length of handle and they make a perfect mole spade. The one i have is a Spear & Jackson believe it or not. Best Regards Rolfe.
  2. There has been some discussion on how to avoid catching moles too far back along the body and therefore not inflicting a quick and clean kill. I would like to pass on a couple of tips to people who may be new to mole trapping to help them set traps correctly so as to maximise the chance of a humane kill every time. I exclusively (well nearly) use the Talpex trap nowadays, mainly because of the very powerful spring action, i will at times where discretion is needed, still use the Duffus trap to ensure traps are not tampered with, but i will be refering soley to the Talpex trap in this short po
  3. If you just want a small amount............the oil from a tin of sardines will do ya..........plus you get to make a nice sandwich also..... Best Regards Rolfe.
  4. Yes mate i agree entirely
  5. Never had garlic flavoured rabbits, unless i added it during the cooking...........but yellow and bright orange fat is not uncommon in these parts. In the area i wire and trap we also have ramsons or wild garlic growing profusley. Best Regards Rolfe.
  6. ARE YOU WILLING TO: This means you better do it. FINE: This is the word women use to end an argument when they feel they are right and you need to shut up. Never use "fine" to describe how a woman looks. This will cause you to have one of "those" arguments. FIVE MINUTES: This is half an hour. It is equivalent to the five minutes that your football game is going to last before you take out the trash, so it's an even trade. NOTHING: This means "something" and you should be on your toes. "Nothing" is usually used to describe the feeling a woman has of wanting to turn you inside out
  7. As i understand it moles are a protected species in Germany..........just another useless fact i suppose Rolfe.
  8. Is that you in the picture LLoydy........you handsome bugger Well done mate you had a fun day........shame about the dog.........is he ok now like? Rolfey.

  10. I like it.........made me smile. Rolfe.
  11. Errr..... there IS a difference between a fox earth and a badger sett.......but i agree with your point that both charlie and brock will share living quarters and rabbits as well for that matter. And yes you are right.......if in any doubt leave well alone. The point of the picture was to show those who may not know........the signs of an occupied badger sett. Best Regards Rolfe.
  12. Same as that Trappa...........not having to produce moles as evidence as well I charge for my time per hour on the ground for agricultural work.......and by the number of visits for domestic. Rolfe.
  13. very interesting Rolfe, I've had loads of doubles, but it's always been two moles. As a matter of interest ...............i have trapped many weasels in mole traps.........just wondered if anyone else had? Rolfe.
  14. Ages ago now someone was asking about the difference between Fox earths and Badger setts.....well here is a picture i found in my archives of a Badger sett. Note the scraped out bedding that old brock changes on a nightly basis. Rolfe.
  15. Often the trap firing sets off the other trigger.........and also the trapped mole will set it off as well. My best double ever was a mole at one end and a weasel in the other.....before the days of digital camera's though, but i wish i had taken a picture. Rolfe.

  18. A 3/4greyhound 1/4collie, BIRD One like this............
  19. Don't do too much with them for the first 6months other than basic obedience training and getting used to ferrets etc if you have any. Then at about six months take him out for a mooch along the hedgerows and take him on some ferreting outings. I certainly would bring them on LATER rather than too early. A lot of potentially good dogs have been ruined by entering too early.........after all.....you never send a boy to a mans work. Rolfe.
  20. You need to report the incidents to the school head.........they are duty bound to ensure your childs safety and they usually liase with the police on such matters. Failing this it would be advisable to report the matter to the police. Rolfe.
  21. Just to show the damage that rabbits can do in immature woodland. We ferreted the wood and took 100+ rabbits out. The damaged trees were mainly Ash........and about twenty years old.
  22. I was sent this by a hunting friend...........The Countryside Alliance produce them. I just thought it was quite good. Hope the picture comes out as it is from a scan....? Rolfe.
  23. Traditionally it was the hazel tealer.........just a giant version of the rabbit tealer.......but nowadays most people including me use the wire tealers......slightly curved at the top and with the snare taped to it. Snareman will tell you in more detail. Rolfe.
  24. to save compressing soil on the washer type trigger on the mole traps , just take a pair of bolt cutters and cut at each side of the centre hole and the bottom drops out and you are now left with a couple of prongs , give them a wee file to smooth , and it works fine.by the way good clear pictures and info rolfe. I think its great that fellow trappers can swap tips and ideas in a forum like this.....we all can learn new tips and tricks to increase our catch rates...........so keep em coming........! Anything that makes my chosen profession easier...........is very welcome. Rolfe.
