  1. Get a GWP. I've had weimaraners and I know which I prefer if you after a worker. Weimaraners are also very very slow to mature
  2. Went past the site the other day..................looks smart. Looking forward to the show.
  3. Your dog will be fine in the kennel as long as it gets plenty of excercise (and I mean excercise whilst training or working not just running about). My gundogs only spend the puppy stage in the house then never see it again. So how old are they when you kennel them? is it too confusing for a dog to allow it into the house in the evenings for a while so we can bond, then put in its kennel at night? 16 weeks when they go full time to kennels. Why let it in the house to bond when you should be outside playing with it in the garden !!!

  5. cheers for the reply. i do like ess. would you say they are 'harder' than the cockers? as in they'll charge through anything i mean. There is a general sense that a springer will go through anything & a cocker will also go through anything.......provided there is game in there!!! If you like ESS then get one, cause your far more likely to put the effort in with a dog you like. But then you would be missing out on the fun cockers bring to your life
  6. Keep liquid piriton on you at all times lads I had a beating dog collapse on me due to a reaction to nettles. He was covered in them & the swelling in his nose made him go down. Rushed to vets for piriton & steroids as he recovered in 3 days. Vet advised just give him piriton BEFORE I start working him as it works far better that way.
  7. Let me know if dog hasn't been sorted out by previous poster. Take it both parents work? Ta
  8. Hi Steve , welcome If your new to gundogs why do you want to start a breeding programme?
  9. You don't have to see the trainer every week. A good trainer will give you some lessons to do between each session. As I lived a long way away from the person I wanted to train with he gave me enough info to last me & the dog a month before we seen him next. You can of course use the books / dvd & then go to the trainer if you hit a problem. (that always cheers them up!!!)
  10. £25 - £30 is right price. I've had a lot of lessons with trainers and god one's are worth every penny. Going to one who deals with mainly cockers is the best because they is a huge difference between them & springers at times.
  11. Ben is often seen on the trialling scene both as a steward & running his dogs. I have nere seen his dogs run (try Drummuir on this site) He sems a nice bloke when I have spoken to him & I'm sure his dogs will be spot on.
  12. Kev Think you need to get that bl00dy cocker in solitary..................far far away form the others, the randy git!!!! Anyone buying these will be getting fantastic dogs off one of the best blokes you'll meet & trust me he knows a wee bit about gundogs!!!! Good Luck
  13. Is this the one you bought on 1st March 09 ??
  14. As a non terrier owner (yet!!) can I come for a nosey? Or is it only for the hard digging lads to attend !!!! You never know I might come back with one....well booked at least
  15. i have 2 cocker spainels mate what i use is 2 slow blasts to stop one long one to sit and 2 fast ones to come back they seam to work well if you go to game fairs and that you will see they ues the same hope this helps. its not easy training a dog but if you be a member of the field tral clubs they is people on there that can train your dogs for freee Why would you want to have 2 commands to do the same job? If your dog sits it's stopped!!!. Get a book / dvd and make the effort to learn. You can use what ever commands you want but just make sure you stick to them & do them
  16. Paul French video's sell everything you want
  17. They are very very slow to mature.........try about 3 before it stops thinking it's a pup. As slow maturing dogs they need pretty high level protein for long than most pups. Join one of the breed clubs & go along to there training classes. Plenty about for HPR's
  18. How old is it? How much experience has it had? What is he going to use it for? I train mine for trialling and don't place too much on heeling iff the lead until they are well into their hunting. Is this a problem? well not really, as the dog is either on the lead, sitting or hunting.
  19. hi all, thanks very much to everyone replying, it sounds like patience is the way to go with a cocker, can anyone recommend some good reading regarding training, thanks again. hi all, it hasn't been mentioned but does a cocker need to hip and eyed scored thanks. A few breeders have started eye scoring & DNA checks but haven't seen any doing HIP scores. Best thing to buy in terms of training (other than good lessons) is Simon Tyers DVD set (Hawcroft Gundogs). Not a cheap set but excellent to watch over & over.
  20. Going from a lab to a cocker will be the best thing you can do!! You'll actually start having fun with your dog
  21. What's the beagle wearing in the pic with the pointer? Looks like he's carrying the mail?
