  1. Paid rabbiting is OK, but you have to look on it as a job of work rather than sport. The numbers don't really matter; what matters is solving the problem. It's amazing how much damage a few rabbits can do to a garden. I work on a day rate. That day rate covers the cost of employing me and anyone I need to help me, the cost of running a business, and some profit. The national pest control companies work at a rate of £45-£75 per hour. At a day rate that means in reality £350-£450 per day. If you've spent thousands on your garden it puts it into perspective somewhat. Whatev
  2. I too am amazed that no-one has started manufacturing Imbras again. Juby traps would be more complicated as I believe the patent is still held by MAFF (now DEFRA). A quick word of warning; while the Mk4 Fenn may well be more suited to immature rabbits than the Mk6, it is not approved for the purpose. To me, the best trap is the one that works well in the environment in which it's been set. Sometimes a Fenn is ideal. Cages certainly have their place these days, and providing you can keep the two legged thieves and vandals at bay they can produce good results. Good luck with whate
  3. Bloody hell; a simple thread about the best way of building a chicken shed turns into world war three...... Locked while I have a clean up and dish out some warnings..... All non-shed posts now removed. Keep it on track please, and keep abuse, text talk and general foolishness off the forum.
  4. oed ----text talk No; a recognised abbreviation for Oxford English Dictionary.....
  5. You've kind of got your wish Aaron..... I just gave you a warning for your repeated use of text talk...... In my defence, I may not have done if I'd seen this thread first. You see, there is one thing that is guaranteed to make sure you are not banned; and that's to start one of these stupid threads that are akin to suicide notes. If you don't want to be part of THL anymore, then don't log on. If you want to end your days visit Socks and make some threats to his face. In the meantime, can we all get back to some sort of sanity while Aaron spends the next 24 hours alternating betw
  6. Sorry guys, but I'm sure everyone will agree that we need to try and keep this section happy. Topic closed.
  7. I can't add much that hasn't already been said, but a few tunnel traps around the outside of the aviary would pick up any passing rats before they have time to establish themselves. If you keep livestock of any sort, especially cage birds or poultry, you will at some stage get rats. And as for a Fenn not being capable of catching weasels; I've caught plenty in unbaited tunnel traps, but if I was targeting them I'd be temped to peel off some breast skin and feathers and stick that onto the plate of the Fenn. Keeping rodenticide bait down long term is no longer legal in the UK, so I'
  8. Landowners are not obliged to control moles, it's up to them. They are however, obliged by law to minimise risks from trips and falls on their land, and some local authorities and parish councils do control moles in parks and on playing fields.
  9. You were growing on me right up to the point where you wrote 'fink' instead of 'think'....
  10. How many times could you 'pop off' those 4 or 5 badgers Stig? As I said earlier, it's easy to sit on the internet and speculate, but the truth is that in most areas the control rate was very high. Reports of sightings were falling, and it wasn't worth keeping the infrastructure in place for a few more billies. You have to remember that this was a pilot, to look at the best ways to cull within the terms of the licence. As pilots, both culls were successful, no-one was shot, and the early indications are that all the badgers killed were done so humanely. Sadly, due to animal rights
  11. There was very little 'non-badger' night work done in the zones. It would be a very brave lamper that ventured out with white light in the zones with so many antis and police in the area. The key fact is that it wasn't 39% of the badgers killed; it was 39% of the target number of badgers. All the night work was done using night vision rather than white light; the only white light was provided by the antis, along with rape alarms, vezulas, whistles and fireworks.
  12. Bud, I can't really add much to what Main Man has written, except that to suggest the contractors only killed 40% of the badgers they saw is stupid. The truth is that 39% of the original target was culled. The original target was set by NE based on an extrapolation of the estimated population. At no time was this anything like the lamping that most people do.... Try going out and having 40 or 50 sabs running across a field towards you whistling and shouting, that's if you can get to your plot of land without being followed/blocked in or worse. It's easy to sit back and specula
  13. Like I said earlier; you are all better placed to speculate than me. Crack on lads.
  14. Whatever you say lads.... You are obviously better placed to comment than me.
  15. Yes Cookie it was..... It's easy to sit here on the internet and speculate about how easy it should have been. Sadly, real life is sometimes more complicated.
  16. Interesting to see so many opinions expressed by so many who obviously have no idea what was involved or how difficult it was.... Enough said.
  17. I think I know the answer to this: Apparently, when a mole is running along his tunnel his front feet are at least half way up the tunnel wall. So if you set the traps ‘prongs up’ he’s much less likely to touch the copper arms with his claws. & Mat, here’s one small advantage of trapline/ Putange traps over duffus: If you find any vertical shafts among the tunnels you can set a trapline in one. Try it, I think you’ll be pleased with the results. I hate to tell you this; but I have a much easier solution to the problem of vertical tunnels. What you do is cover the run o
  18. Good on ya Dave..... I'm a grumpy old fuddy duddy and rely on you guys to tell me what works and what doesn't....
  19. No-Mole, Trapline, bollocks............. I'm going to sound like a grumpy old twat (yes, I often do), but why? If you can't catch it in a Duffus, I don't see how it can be done..... For me, it's Duffus or nowt...
  20. I'm back. Did I miss much?

  21. The local paper here showed a picture of a goat (in case anyone didn't know what it looked like) with it's face blanked out We shouldn't joke about it. The victim was, after all, someone's kid...
  22. Dick. Place to shoot a sheep with a captive is from the highest point of the head towards the crook of the jaw/neck. Do not shoot it in the back of the head; apart from anything else it's illegal. Go to the Humane Slaughter Association website; they've got guides on there which are free.
  23. Tell me who it is quickly and I'll ban the twat!
  24. Don't forget you don't have to prove 'good reason' to get a SGC you just have to be a safe and responsible person. I'd be reluctant to tell any FEO that I intended shooting foxes in the garden. .410 is an ideal dispatch weapon, and a 12 bore with the right cartridge will make a good job of them.
