It's been a great thread; thanks to one and all Time for this old ratcatcher to hit the hay and dream of days of long ago, when deer were bigger, and dogs were better, and I could run........ Night all.

Looks like a fine stag Tommy I've seen a few bigger and lots smaller.... Over the years, I shot more than my fair share of 'em sometimes with slug, sometimes with AAA, sometimes with .243 and occasionally with the .22 pistol (usually roadside). I also went through a .308 phase, but reds are no different to anything else; put the lead in the right bit and they go down.... A mature stag should have his 'rights'. It's an Exmoor term; I expect the Scots have other names for it. Our pub landlord did a bunk a few weeks ago. One of the saddest aspects for me was that he took wit

First Cross Collie Grey Coat Problem
Matt replied to Shadrack1860's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Get her Thyroid checked out.... Years ago we had a collie that had problems with his coat. He was generally OK, but his coat was coming out in lumps and he looked awful. Tried all sorts, change of diet, shampoos, counselling (no, actually that was me) and it turned out his thyroid wasn't working properly. Got some pills, and he was a different dog within days. -
Do you know what lads; I'm sitting here enjoying a beer and thinking back to those days...... Hand on heart, I don't think the old gal ever pulled down anything with horns while she was in my ownership! I can certainly remember a few hinds, and a few roe, and alot of redskins, but......., no, I don't think she did anything horney BUT, I have seen it done, usually I was the wheezing fool that arrived just after one of the fit lads had done the 'biz', but I can assure you a good dog could tackle reds on a regular basis. Happy days, long ago....................

Funnily enough Giro, like you (and I'm sure many others on here) I've been through stages when I couldn't afford 'proper' meat, and had to live off my wits and lots of bunny meat. It kinda puts you off the stuff... In my (humble) experience, roe tend to sit tight in cover much more than reds who tend to evacuate the other end as you enter (ooh, sounds kinda dirty!). I did get the old girl fairly steady at one stage and used her as a bit of a 'backup' for when things didn't go completely to plan with the rifle.... but that's a whole other story....

he prob answer when hes finished banging his head of the table That won't answer a simple question.. i know i am going on a bit but fook me this mod is cluless if he can't make a correct judgment on a post..it seem's his judgement was confused on several post's and i still have no PM or correct answer why my post was removed You're going to have a long wait. As I said in my earlier post: Because 1. It was offensive and 2. It was irrelevant rubbish. Get over it and move on. Nothing wrong with my judgement; read above. Now let it lie.

Both. The lampers would often catch them in the middle of a field; often the trouble was picking a good one to run out of a big herd. I've also seen them driven in cover with dogs during the day. I'm afraid it's never been my thing either really; but those lads certainly knew how to get the job done quickly and quietly. As for feeding yourself and your dogs; I'd rather eat rabbit to be honest. Red deer venison is an acquired taste

Go back and read what I've written. I've already answered. Now that's enough. Pack it in or feck off. No-one is interested in your petty little tantrum.

Digital cameras came in 10-15 years ago I think..... even then, my digital pictures are pretty appalling! The dogs did used to take a bit of stick from time to time, but the good ones knew their job and knew the right place to hold Tenderise the meat? Not on your nelly! Give me shot venison over dogged venison any day! In the ranks of 'great hunters of deer with dogs' I'm fairly low on the list. As I said earlier, I was always more of a terrier and gun kinda guy... that old bitch was 'gifted' to me as her owner wasn't working her and she was going round the bend. When I got he

Hey idiot im not throwing a tantrum i asked a question as to why my harmless post was removed and you can not answer my question ... Which I've answered. Now grow up or feck off. Your choice.....

A bit of both Living in hunting country, the opportunities to make money out of redskins was not common. I did sell skins when they were worth a bit, and those tails went off to some scooter boys for £5 a pop. On some permission one day doing a bit of rough shooting with the mutts, and the old gal nailed a fox. I'd just wrestled the fecking thing off her when the first foxhound appeared... "hounds must have chopped it" the hunstman said then goes on to ask me if I'd dig a fox out for them as they didn't have a terrierman for their wednesday meets. I obliged them (being the g

I have to admit I never went out purposely after the big boys, but I'd be lying if I said it never happened. Being both a dog man and a gun man back then, I'd rather stick the rifle out of the truck window than piss about with the dog to be honest. Some of the lads I knocked about with then did it regular and made big money; there are few roe in that area and fallow are practically non-existent. Saw one of my old pals not long ago and he's out of the dog lark altogether now. I do, however, know that some lads are still at it, and still catching plenty. Those big dogs tend to just b

The old gal used to like knocking over the redskins. Back in 'the day' I owned some handy terriers, one of which was a bloody good bolter. This was from on cleave on Exmoor:

Millet, stamp your feet, slam some doors and then pop off to bed. But please, stop ruining a perfectly good thread with your childish tantrum.

A question I've often asked myself  Still, things have been looking better of late

No problem I'm only sorry I have so few, and what I have is of such a poor quality Another time, another place, and I may have enjoyed it too. Sadly, this was neither so it's gone.

Do your really need an answer to that? Do you think it's appropriate to post pictures of infected genitals on here? We've got more than enough dicks without you posting pictures of them! The old bitch was 1/2 cross. I put her across a collie/grey because at the time I was after a more compact dog for the rabbit work...It's all very well having a bulldozer of a dog with little or no fear of anything, but they're not really cut out for ferreting and mooching around the farms while I work. These days I stick to terriers.

This picture is really sad for me... The pup I kept, that was sadly killed a few weeks after this picture was taken. 'Aston' at 7 weeks, circa 1995

Enjoying her retirement and being spoiled by Mrs R.....

About the worst photo I've ever taken, again, playing with pups.....

As promised; scans of some very old snaps (disposable cameras have a lot to answer for). I'm only posting these to make Paulus feel better about his photography! My old bitch playing with her pups:

Whatever you say Lucky... I've got nothing to prove, and nothing to gain. I'm just stating facts. Photos will follow later; I've found some dodgy snaps of the mutt, (no quarry shots, as I said earlier) which may make Paulus look like David Bailey.............. In the meantime, I need to feed Mrs Rat and wash up. I'll fire up the scanner later.
