Most of the Arab countries are making peace and doing deals with Israel ! Its the Iranians who are trying to reverse this by backing Hamas and Hizbollah in their attacks on Israel. Cheers.

You have to question Hamas’s motives for such a barbaric attack ? They must know that Israel’s response would be overwhelming. Are they hoping that newsreels of a devastated Gaza and pictures of dead Palestinian women and children will sway world opinion and Isreal will be villified ? Are they really willing to sacrifice thousands of their own people to sway opinions and gain a political advantage ? Cheers.

The Israeli’s are in an invidious position ; if they raze the Gaza Strip to the ground, as I’m sure they’d like to, they will be likened to the nazi’s. If they don’t, it will embolden every terrorist that hates them ! The UN Secretary General has just been on the news condemning the siege and saying the UN will send aid to Gaza ! The left wing media will soon be full of reports about injured and starving Palestinians and the hundreds of murdered and kidnapped Israeli’s will be forgotten. I worked with the Royal Saudi Airforce at the Air Defence Centre in Riyadh back in the 70’s and one specialist could track every Israeli air movement near the borders. I know that surveillance has improved massively since then, so even if everyone was on leave, which is doubtful, there would have been automated responses to any breaches. Someone seems to have been asleep….. Cheers.

What I can’t understand is how Hamas could bulldoze the border fence and come pouring through and it took so long for the IDF to respond ? No patrols, no cctv, no aerial surveillance ? Not like the Yehudi’s to not be on the ball ! Cheers.

Sorry for the late reply , Wilf, I’ve been out watching the West Ham - Newcastle game ! Anyhow, I didn’t say we could or should try to solve the Middle East problem, I was simply stating some facts to show that we were at least partly to blame for it. Another bit of Middle East history that is often forgotten about is the agreement the British had during WW1 with Prince Faisal and his brother Sharif Ali of the Hejaz, (now the west of Saudi Arabia). It would be easier to cure cancer than to solve “the Middle East problem” ! But to say “nothing to do with us, guv” isn’t correct. It all started when we defeated the Ottoman Empire in WW1 who controlled most of the Middle East including Palestine. This lead to the British Palestinian Mandate, then the Sykes-Picot agreement and then the Balfour declaration, which shaped the modern Middle East and lead to the formation of the Jewish state of Israel. Palestine wasn't the only place to be considered for the Jews to form the state of Israel ; eastern Saudi Arabia and part of Uganda were also considered. When the U.S. president, Harry Truman, discussed the plan with King Ibn Saud of Saudi Arabia, the king asked " why should we give up part of our land ? It has nothing to do with us.". Truman replied " Well the Germans murdered six million Jews ". The king thought about it, then replied " well, give the Jews Germany, that is the only fair way" ! Bit of common sense, I thought !
