It's a very noble outlook but In reality that's not how it works. By the time that animal has gotten to that stage it will have had several ruts so it has already passed on it's genes, and it's offspring are passing on those genes so shooting something "in it's prime." isn't stopping the good genes getting passed on. If it is carefully managed there is no reason why these animals shouldn't be taken, especially if the money raised can be used to fund the preservation of the species overall. it's definitely a yearling roe buck. It's herbivorous. Look at the molars. Pedicles are the wrong angle and the sub orbital scent glands are too small for muntjac.

Wash them with something like laundry detergent and warm water to de grease them then you need some Hydrogen Peroxide. Keep it off the antlers and let them soak in it. When they have been buried like that they never really come up proper clean.

Jesus. Sorry you lost your friend and forgive me if my questions below come across wrong but... He held his legs up meaning he could have put his feet down and survived? That is an unbelievable effort to make to kill yourself, you would have thought some sort of survival instinct would kick in. I can't begin to imagine the mental state of a person that would be able to do that. Terribly sad.
