I'm going to put baffles in the boxes to direct them onto the trap better and create a lower ceiling. Hopefully that works. If not the estate might just have to fork out for mk6 traps. Its certainly putting me off using mk4s

I use a thermal for all sorts. It's definitely a game changer and feels a bit like cheating but, like anything, you choose whether or not to take unfair advantage when you're using one. If you're out for numbers culling stuff or trying to be invisible they are very handy. It certainly wouldn't help me bag up with a catty as I seem to have lost the knack and can't hit a barn door at the moment lol. It does show me stuff to miss though

I run a few trap lines using those boxes, usually with mk6's which consistently produce good kills. Since using this estates mk4's in the same boxes I'm still getting majority clean kills but, to me, an unacceptable increase in foul catches. I think I'd like to modify the boxes in some way to reduce that so just looking for ideas. I think you're right about the height, might add false floors to reduce the height

@OldPhil @comanche do you have any ideas on how to improve killing in these boxes with mk 4s? My own traps are mk 6 and I get good clean kills mostly but an estate I'm doing has provided mk4s to put in my boxes and the difference is noticeable. I'm wondering if packing the floors up would help?

Bergara B13 take down, any experiences?

Thank you. I am very keen to take you up of the offer of a beaver hunt! Covid has interfered in several hunting trips and it's getting very boring now -
I trap quite a lot of squirrels in both mk4 and mk 6 fenns in the same type of boxes. I much prefer the mk 6s, I think they kill much cleaner and get a lot less foul catches

Thats good to hear. How do you find the accuracy, build quality, finish, etc? -

I'm not sure. I'm torn between the longer range of the 20 and the handling of the 16.5 -
As above, I have an open slot for a 308 and been tempted by one of these. Has anyone shot one or had and experience of one? Thanks

Went out this morning for fallow but the fog drove me out of the fields and into the woods. Plenty of deer about but the rhodies are too thick to be able to do much with them and extraction would've been a nightmare so went for breakfast instead

I've been doing some repairs on a few of these platforms this week. This one needed one of the support beams replacing which was a bit of an arse

The black bitch is Pat springer, about 16tts, the brown and white bitch is out of the black one to my whippet Russell dog and she's about 18tts. I'm quite like to put a whippet x terrier of some sort over the brown and white one at some point in the future

I'm thinking of putting a whippet or whippetxterrier to the brown and white bitch above at some point. I think I've had enough of big lurchers, these small ones suit me

I wish I'd been sensible enough to train as a vet

Could've been a lot worse to be honest. The dog came good which is the main thing. Your not wrong though ... it was stressful as f**k

We've done the best part of a grand in the vets this week. One of the five dogs went rogue and broke into a cupboard on the yard and ate rat poison. Also ate 24 eggs, the egg box and part of the sofa. Didn't know which one it was so had to treat all 5 with activated charcoal and vitamin k. Then one of them threw up charcoal liquid and destroyed the carpet. Thought we'd got away with it when following day one of the youngsters went down hill, day off work, back to vets, on drip, all kinds of meds and stayed in all day. Seems ok now though which is good, unlike my wallets. Grand to the vets, new

Its full lockdown on all poultry, has been for a bit. Have a look on .gov. I'm sure plenty of people are ignoring it but fines are supposed to be quite fierce if you get caught

So these are your heros testing their dogs ?
Tyla replied to SheepChaser's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I guess it all comes down to ways and means, some things, to me at least, are acceptable and some things are definitely not. I have no doubt we get poached a bit but theres barely any evidence and therefore it's not on our radar too much. Previously we've had trophy animals killed, beheaded and left, gates smashed and vehicles and property stolen. This illicits an entirely different response simply because its an entirely different crime. No doubt this pisses off our "regulars" who have been carrying on quietly and without doing too much harm -
Shepherds pie. always tastes better when there were your own sheep

I used my dog across my bitch when he was 11 or 12, he'd never been across a bitch before and produced 8 good pups. I tried to repeat the mating a year later and they tied well but she never took.

I suspect its because Jai and I spent quite a long time one day dismantling an enormous brash pile to extract my busher who had forced her way under it and was either stuck or refusing to come out. To add insult to injury when we finally got to her the wretched rabbit bolted and was missed by all the lurchers. She then popped out to follow it. It was along scratchy job with nothing to show for it.
