  1. When i veiw threads sometimes the posts, in particular the pictures, are covered over by the following post. Is it my pc or is the site playing up? thanks
  2. Theres alot of red stains where they've pissed on my ground, I was also wondering why Im not convinced its always red as I've seen in all sorts of colours when pissing the bag. Always assumed it was to do with dehydration - I know mine can be a tad dark after a night on the beers  Diet also makes sense as an answer as we have nearly a foot of snow here so they're struggling to get grass and having to make do with bark and stems. Could also be to do with fertility though, anyone got a definative answer?
  3. Good luck! I cant get my terrier broken to ferrets for the life of me! Hes been "corrected" so many times that now he sees them and looks the other way, total avoidance, but if my back is turned they would be toast. They can run round in front of him in the garden and he just shakes and looks the other way but if he ever got the chance I know they would only last a second. Ive given up, ferretings not really his thing anyway but it would still be nice to be able to trust him. Lucky the lurchers know the score!
  4. Looks like a good day out, hows the tan dog bred? His head is the spit of our jrtxwhip
  5. i'd be very interested to know how you get on, i have been contemplating getting one for a while as we often hunt in woodland where its hard to locate a dog which has killed and even harder to find the quarry if you have to call the dog back. if you, or anyone else, does get one please post a review of it
  6. Mini shovel, a tenner from screwfix. Short, light, fibreglass shaft, rounded point. ideal for me
  7. Cheers for all the replies, i will post on what happens
  8. i did discuss amputation with the vet. Does it have any effect on the other toes? Would the remaining toes not be more prone to injury?
  9. Tyla has just come back from the vets. Her second toe on her left fore was swollen and after an x-ray they say she has torn the ligament on the side of her toe. They say a minimum of 3 months rest with no excersize at all MAY fix it but they warned that its in no way guaranteed and may happen again first time shes run. im absolutely gutted, does anyone know much about this or have any experiences? My next step is to get hold of a greyhound vet and get a second opinion but i dont hold out much hope.
  10. imo its all about respect. i hunt because its in my blood, but the animals i hunt are killed quick and clean. There is a huge ifference between hunting an animal for food, pest control or sport and torturing it for money to entertain strangers. All animals have their predators so are mentally geared up to cope with that but no animal has evolve to cope with that kin of unnatural stress. My tuppence worth
  11. it depends on your ground, i prefer bolters as alot of our buries are more than 10 feet deep so a killing hob would be more of a pain than anything else! On the other hand Brimmer off here does alot up north on the dales in shallow buries where a hard hob and a good spade are a good option. Same as most things, horses for courses!
  12. This is Ollie, a big mongrel terrier 16" tts. He was a rescue and has been a royal pain in the arse for nearly a year, painfully slow to start but seems to be finally getting there at last.
  13. what kind of height is the dog in the pic? atb natter 21" tts
  14. We have a JRTxwhippet, he does alright at most things. The terrier was the sire rather than the dam though, im not sure if that would make alot of difference or not
  15. What they eat makes a big difference to how they taste. Compare a pigeon thats been on the holly berries and one that been on corn stubbles - you will be able to tell the difference!
  16. Whos getting what for christmas? i need some ideas for Santa's list i've got most of the gear i need but theres always something handy that only gets thought of in january!!!
  17. Technically hes my wifes but we both work him. He does everything a small lurcher should ferrets, bushes, rats, flushes things, never had a yap out of him on or off the lamp. Very trainable and very keen. i would definately have another and we might even put him over my lurcher bitch next year.
  18. We go every sunday. Never big numbers but its always good fun, you never know what will turn up, had rabbits, moorhens, pigeons even the odd roe gets flushed. We use 4 JRTs and my mongrel terrier to flush to my two lurchers. Herwick has recently got another lurcher pup to even things up a bit next season. its definately the most relaxing way to hunt, no gear to worry about just us and the dogs. i love watching them all working together as a pack, mine were all over the place when we first started but the more they work together with the terriers the better they get!
  19. Thats a bit sly?!?! Whats the point of that? Seems like alot of work has gone into it and shows the same dogs throughout? i bet the original owner of the pics is furious!
  20. My bitsa bitch has caught a fair few birds, pheasants both airbourne and in cover, a few crows and a magpie. Our jrtxwhippet has had a few pheasants and even the terrier once. We dont go out looking for them and avoid the keepered areas after release. im always pretty concious of how much work has gone into rearing them but i dont mind the dogs grabbing the odd wild bird when they get the chance. i have more pics but cant find them on the PC right now. Dont have many partridge round here but im sure she' be happy to give them a try!
  21. Try googling calicatchers or californiacatchers. The guy seems to breed some decent pats
  22. Me and herdwick regularly run a mixed pack, his terriers, 4 jrt bitches, my 2 lurchers and my mongrel terrier. The russells are very good in cover and they are all working well together. The red terrier is my bushing dog, he was a rescue and has been very hard work but recently he has just started to come good! Hes 16" tts and chunky so too big to go to ground in most places. im pretty sure there have to be easier dogs to train though!
  23. Thanks, i've heard borders are late starters so im willing to keep on keeping on. Fingers crossed we have passed the tearing the hair out stage!
  24. Working the dogs is still my favourite but a mouch with the gun is good too, change is as good as a rest an all that
