  1. Good old chicken dinner today Chicken filled with shallots, garlic, thyme, pepper corns, skin parted with a spoon and butter put between the skin and the meat served with cream mash, rosemary and thyme roast spuds and a bit of veg ?
  2. Sometimes I feel like giving up, seen 4 gingers at the farm last night, spent 3 1/2 hours there tonight, tried a load of calls, nothing, I know the weather wasn’t ideal, very still, warm and a bright moon, but I thought I’d of at least seen one, I almost feel like packing it in and taking up golf ?
  3. I worm mine around day 10 after they go into the pens, I use flubenvet this comes in the medicated feed, I also use a medicated tonic that’s added to the drinker system
  4. The old girl at the shoot gave me 3/4kg of brambles earlier and said they would do me for a bramble and apple pie, she doesn’t know me very well, second batch of bramble gin on the go ??
  5. It’s normally now to the end of November when they arrive at the shoot, I don’t like them shooting them before the end of December ( I have no reason for this ) and most of the guns won’t shoot at them at all, have you ever eaten one?
  6. You getting many woodcock up your way, we have a few natives up at the shoot but I haven’t noticed any good numbers yet I’ll do my best, it’s not very often you see that amount in a night around here, I’d be over the moon if I managed 2 in a night ?
  7. Feeding this morning and they are doing what they always do this time of year and that’s wander off first thing, they head for thick cover and if it’s a clear day they walk the field edges. What I need now is some murky dark days and some proper cold weather to keep them around the pens and the farm back to the sheep farm tonight for another go, went last night, seen 4 and never got a shot a any of them, they are liking the vixen in heat call now
  8. I had that a couple of times over the last couple of weeks, it seems to of sorted itself out now
  9. What’s going on here ? Where’s the write up for me to enjoy with a cup of tea and a flapjack, are you saving them for your memoirs ??
  10. Deep down you know the answer to this question, don’t fight it Ian ?
  11. The thing I’ve found with the thermal is nothing escapes it, you can use a lamp or NV and not see what’s there, I’ve seen far more using thermal ( apart from the one that crept up on me last night ?) over the past few months, especially where there’s thick cover, you might not know what it is but it gives you something to have a look at, it’s paid off a few times lately where I would of walked past a fox on the sheep farm and the shoot still if you are doing it for the sport of it, nothing beats going out with a mate and a lamp to see what you can find ?
  12. I’ve just watched that too, ? she should of stopped off for a chat with SL, instead of a potter and a stitcher, that’s if she could catch up with him, bombing about like that
  13. As you’ll know I’m quite new to all this technology and I’m still getting used to it, I really like the thermal but you can sometimes find yourself looking at something a long way off and not paying attention to what’s around you ( last night was a prime example of this ) as for the NV that’s set before I set off and that’s just one button and it’s on and ready, I still love going out with the lamp and day scope, even better if I’ve got a lamp man with me, but they are getting hard to find these day’s, nobody seems to like the great outdoors now
  14. Feeding today and they are right throughout the shoot now, partly because they are adult birds now going about their daily business and partly because we bothered them last Saturday, there wasn’t big numbers on the tracks but next door were shooting and there was a few dog walkers about, by the time I left about half 1 they were on the feed and heading back up the fields towards the farm and pens, I’m confident that they are hanging around because they are taking a lot of feed, so that’s a good thing ? I wasn’t going to mention this ( and I’m glad I was on my own ) but seen as Mr S
  15. Orible pair of bastar*ds, if I want to go somewhere to get a load of abuse I’ll sit in a room with the missus ??
  16. A cracking weekend away for you there mate, well done ?
  17. ?that’s not me, but I’m taking that as a massive compliment because I’m more than old enough to of been his dad for a fair few years, it just goes to show my youthful looks are following me into middle age ??
  18. Cheers mate when I arrived first thing before the guns there was very little about on the tracks, it’s almost like someone tipped them off, that first drive soon eased my fears, like I said the standard of shooting in the most part is not great but this is not a bad thing on the first couple of days when we are teaching them to fly, if this had of been the first day when I joined the shoot we would of been looking at 150 bird day, a group of them were very good shots but left to set up there own syndicate ( that’s now no longer and I don’t want them back ) I’m more than happy with a 40 -
  19. First day over and although a very small day, with us only doing 2 main drives and not pushing one of them all the way and making up the rest of the day with small areas and a few bits of other drives it was a good day 1st drive we pushed what I know as the tip through, setting off from from the bottom of the field it wasn’t until we reached the tip that we started to see birds, they were doing what was expected and running towards the end of the drive, a few birds were dropped before we got to the last part of the drive, where we change direction a push it down, this is where the action
  20. ? a lovely little read that while I stand in my kitchen drinking tea and getting ready for my first day pheasant shooting of the season you should post this in the rifle section, I’m sure there’s a few on there that would be interested in this ATB Stav
  21. We’ll I’m all sorted, birds fed, radios charged, shirt ironed and boots waxed, feet up now for an early start ?
