  1. There deffinately a breed that should only be kept by dedicated terriermen.Breeders over here selling pups for up to $2000 dollars, opening the gates to puppy peddlers.
  2. Had a cattle dog sire pups at just on 5 months. If I were you I'd give the pup away as a kids pet,its not what you wanted.Never seen puppy fluff on genuine beagle/Russell cross.
  3. Started hunting a new area on a large property I hunt.Netted a couple of warrens and the rabbits instead of flying into the nets just hopped in and sat quietly.Didn't net the next 2 holes and rabbits didn't even try to escape the dogs. The rabbits looked wild and were in a remote area,so I doubt they were domestic, although they were big an fat.Next warren back to normal. It was a successful day but left me feeling sorry for the quiet rabbits.Anyone experienced this or any ideas on this behaviour.
  4. Both my dogs were ripped on wire as pups but soon learnt how to clear fences safely. At the end of the day they are working dogs, injuries are part of life.
  5. Noticed different colours coming up when there's big rabbit numbers in an area. Not being singled out as much by predators. My dogs seem to make an extra effort on coloured rabbits.
  6. Should be a terrierman comedy show, never laughed so much on these posts.
  7. To answer socks they probably don't need to be that fast or have high drive for ferreting,I've just got dogs from a long line of ferreting dogs which happen to be fast and driven and come to expect that from my dogs.I consider my dogs to be fairly game after I was attacked by a rouge 6ft roo wnen ferreting. My little 12kg whippet/stag had the roo on the ground by the throat in a second, copping a big rip on her ribs.I managed to get her off it,with the surprised roo taking off.She is usually stock and roo proof except for that occasion.Handy to have a bit of gameness, though I don't expect it fr
  8. If not fast enough or low prey drive, anything else Ill work on or tolerate. But speed and drive essential.
  9. My bitch goes out of her way to play and be social with ferrets when not working, even mothering an orphan litter of ferrets. She is from a line of ferreting whippet/stags.She also taught my very aggressive denning Russell to be gentle around ferrets.I let them all play together supervised in a fenced off area.I think the love of ferrets may be genetic on her part.Had other dogs work well with ferrets but seem to just tolerate them as a means to an end.
  10. I found ferrets too closely bred were hard to handle.Had an accidental litter of brother to sister pitbulls, some pups were huge, some tiny, all were extremely aggressive, had to separate litter at 5 weeks. They were from a tightly bred line.
  11. Tried every way to cook rabbit, all taste like your hands smell after a days ferreting.Curry just amplifies the taste.
  12. Had a brindle dog useless on rabbits, caught and killed a couple of foxes, would not stop chasing roos,. knocked out twice by these.Really soft feet, would bleed every time out.Very fast and loyal, great guard dog at home, but would trip over its own feet when ferreting.
  13. Not all dogs retrieve.im happy with mine as long as shes catching and giving up catch.
  14. One of my whippet/stags retrieved to hand as a pup, then at 18months started stopping 10-15 foot out holds rabbit on ground till picked up.Works fine with other dogs, giving up catches to them but will guard and attack other dogs when rabbits are bagged.4 now cant break her from this.but otherwise good worker.Very sensitive, moody bitch.
  15. I always put boiled veg peelings except onion in their food, was told potatoes are bad recently, never heard tomatoes are.
  16. My 2 whippet/stags will watch parrots feeding in the back yard fascinated, retrieve rabbits unharmed, but go ballistic on foxes and even worse with possums, not interested in cats.
  17. I live on a small acreage, kept well mowed.Never seen a rabbit in the area before.Behind me is five acres of blackberries.Since I got back into hunting four years ago rabbits have invaded my property.digging into veg patch, under ferrets shed and feeding right upto the lurchers kennels sending them crazy during the night.its like the b*****ds are haunting me. The dogs taking 2 or 3 a week dosent seem to affect numbers.Good thing I don't have to go far when not on my usual permission.Just seems strange behaviour.
  18. Good luck with your pup mate.Would be good on all game over here.
  19. Some Ive seen have thin pads, but are nice dogs with a lot, if not too much speed.A bit suicidal on rabbits.
  20. Had four silky terriers as a kid, used to tree rats in my back yard almost every night which id shoot with BB gun, fond memories.
  21. Did the terrier or lurcher catch the pheasant? My lurchers wont touch anything with feathers, never taught not to just not interested.
  22. There one of the original pigdog crosses over here.good on scrub bulls too.Pretty exciting, but ill stick with my little running dogs on the bunnies.
  23. I saw a doco where a bloke in Australia had two basenjis and a cattle cross bull terrier, he was using them to clear feral cats and foxes from a fenced in wildlife area.Thought they might be decent hunters.
  24. Does anyone use basenji or cross and if they would be useful to bush to runners.
