  1. one of the reasons it is illegal in some states is the fearful misconception of the ferrets getting loose and turning feral.. which would interfere with other natural wild life.. Check with your Local DNR ... if they dont have any SPECIFIC answers... you may be ok if you're allowed to use hunting dogs in your area, under the same sorta conditions.. as for using ferrets from pet stock.. its possible.. though i'd tend to go through a private breeder so that you can have late alters... the early neutering done with pet ferrets in the states tends to leave them permenantly immature and ki
  2. Hi, we had a kit with this problem this spring, The vet said it looked like either a calcium deficiancy or scoliosis... as our kits were supplimented with kibble mush as well as the raw rabbit from 3 weeks we think osteodystrophy unlikely and the rest of the litter were fine.. Hubby was gonna call it a day with this poor lil mite as he wasn't really getting around all that great at 8 weeks.. and we didn't want it to suffer a poor quality of life, like you, we didn't notice it until that time.. but within days he picked up a bit... ( we did add STRESS to the kibble for a couple weeks
  3. what you want is dust extraction venting.. look on woodworking pages .... they use it for dust extraction systems for wood working... see through i guess so you can see any blockages... we've been thinking of getting some.. but its a bit pricey for what we want to do with it... http://www.rutlands.co.uk/cgi-bin/psProdDet.cgi/DKCDH
  4. looks donkey brown to me Christ Kay, that'll be a new class at the shows if anyone gets wind of that one! "Next up after the 'donkey brown' category, the 'looks like the gobbet of phlegm I coughed up last night' category!" what about the none descript colours though you know the sludge brown & the ginger albinos People just wouldn't pay as much to get a ginger/sandy versus a cinammon/copper/'blue'or whatever. No fancy names, no fancy prices well you know the more classes the less entered into each class more prizes to be had naaa i like
  5. heheh lorelei used to be indecisive, but now she's not sure! hehehe
  6. looks sandy to me... but a little dark.. like a light coloured poley or dark sandy lol
  7. well perhaps its either something to do when not hunting.. or its a pet ferret thing.. and they're mostly neutered so no kits and no smelly hobs... i happen to agree though... if you want to see a ferret in best shape.. they should be in the winter! lovely lush coats and happy bunnies... errr.. ferrets i mean... would be better to have real competitions with ferrets.. ie.. everyone take a bit of hedge and the guy that comes back with the most bunnies wins! lol
  8. Racing can be lots of fun.. but it would be more fun i think if they could rig it up to chase a rabbit or dummy rabbit through.. much more entertaining i think...lol gonna have to put my thinkin cap on maybe! I have a water obstacle included in my racing setup - it really adds more fun and keeps the audience entertained with some the antics the ferrets get up to when they reach the water - it's only about 1/2" deep... Starescue have a great racing setup with like 3-4 obstacles per run... a see saw, water thing, bridge etc...

  10. what keeps the rabbit from just goin backwards back into the hole ?
  11. I did say most don't do well..... Just as some ferrets are better workers than others, some adapt to the wild better. The ones that don't (the vast majority) die. Not much of a dream there mate there are colonies of feral ferrets in New Zealand being used as a Control in a scientific study of Ferret DNA on a world wide scale currently being done by a Ferret Chap in the US... more and more of His findings are leaning toward the more natural methods most of us on this site use with our ferrets leading to longer healthier lives...
  12. Our Jill was dragging the kts back to the nest still at 8 weeks.. had to seperate her even though she'd completely weaned them.. they weren't getting any exersize .. every time they stepped foot from the nest she dragged them back... within a day of seperating the Jill the whole litter picked up and are dashin around Mad now at 10 weeks...
  13. is there anyone near the wigan area who has a jill that has recently given birth that could feed 2 kits all that are remaining from a litter of 11 they are 3 days old. I dont know ANY details myself but thought this site would offer a better shot of SOMEONE having a jill that could foster than a pet site lol if you can help please PM me and i'll pass your details on.. thanks
  14. It COULD be hormones from being a mum... THIS should settle with time.. but if it doesn't... you may need to consider having her spayed.. this would sort out what ever hormones are causing the OVERLY maternal stuff... takes a few weeks after a spay to settle but when they do .. there is a marked improvement..
  15. took our adults and kits down to the local school fate at their request recently.. did a lil fun racing and LOTS of kiddies with hands on .. they LOVED it! Luckily i was covered by our club insurance... that can get sticky if someone gets hurt.. trips over the cage or gets bitten or something stupid
  16. i no turkey can be a bit dry even for us humans .can you not get a regular supply of rabbit as they tend to hold plenty off fluids for kits and the adult also and will they still have a little feed of the jill .good luck try pouring a little water around the mince as they are eating.. you'll be able to tell if they are thirsty ... if so..try adding a bowl of water to the cage.. easy as that
  17. ferrets travel really well.. and a cat carrier type thing works fine... if its going to be for a long day .. you might consider a trick the pet folkuse.. hang a small hammock in the carrier.. put newspaper under ( so they aren't wallowing in their own mess) and add a water bottle.. they'll be comfortable and rested come end of the day and ready for a good evening's work!
  18. glad the lil guy is doin better! ..
  19. If He's anything like His Sire.. He'll NEVER attempt to bite you... once past the playful kits stage which as you know he is already well nipped trained ... but wont tolerate another hob in the mating season.. His mum is a fidget but a cracking worker .. she has her cranky high spirits as well.. so you just can never tell
  20. it was suggested on a pet forum but seems a sound idea ... can you cover the cage in a net curtain or fly screen (very fine mesh) .. will let the air and light in and keep the flies out... cant make myself go hang curtains for my crew just yet though LOL.. try feeding dry during the day and raw after sunset... remove any extras in the morning before the flies rise...
  21. I've been doing a little research on this as we had some slow developement this spring... i found this excerpt though i dont know if its a Medical Finding or just an experienced second hand knowledge.... http://www.walkerworld.me.uk/SNFR/rescue_037.htm i agree that if there is something amiss a visit to the vet or at the very least seperating the remaining kits to be nourished on with a calcium/phospherous boost or kibble (which will contain these things) would be in order... My thoughts are perhaps they just AREN'T getting the full nutrients they require in their current diet..
  22. Thats the problem Sue... they dont use a corner.. and have decided JUST in front of the bedding box is perfect.. i'm well aware of cleaning out the corner etc.. the problem was them sliding through it constantly and goin wherever they damn well please.. I've put wood chip down and mostly got the food into a corner that is protected from TOO much of it ...seems to be working some.. At least i dont have wet nasty kits anymore...
  23. You're welcome Will.. it was nice to see your set up and meet your family while i was there, you keep them tidy and obviously well cared for.. i'm sure the little guy will do just fine with you.
  24. Hi .. i'm having trouble keeping the kits clean and dry in the shed. They are 6 weeks tomarrow and in with an older litter of 9 week old kits and 1 mum jill Its 10 x 4 foot with two bedding boxes and a cat climbing gym in one end and the food water and poo corner at the other end... The floor is concrete and i'm loath to put down woodchip as i've had problems with ingesting it in the past (the ferrets not me!!) .. Saw dust etc is asking for growing kits to have respitory problems ... and i'm Stumped!! Mum keeps dragging them to a dark corner under the cat gym that is against a
  25. It certainly depends on the situation... a ferret to a 13 yr old at ALL!!! requires full parently co operation and consent... Hense why i'll be having a long discussion with Will's parents... i wouldn't rehome a ferret to a child unless the parents are fully on board to take up ALL care when the kid gets bored.. thats just plain facts! As for 1 or more ... i know many people who have single pet ferrets who are happy and healthy and very well loved, Granted these are indoor ferrets and i would recommend a single ferret be kept inside so that even if the kids at school there are others home
