we feed DoC once a week... not as a staple for sure they aren't as full in nutrients as needed we get ours from a pet store or honey brook farms petstores run between 4-10p per chick and online is cheap providing you buy in bulk lol

is it possible to do a warren properly like that ?? i mean after the ferret went around a single bend and back you would be hard pressed to be able to "tug"it out with a string ??? sounds really unreliable to me!!

Are you feeding dry at the moment as well? Matt i have been feeding them on dry food, liver and eggs and a drop of milk... yeap.. i've seen this... its called Lazy Ferret Syndrome and comes from havin a cushy life LOL if you wanna take the time you can build it up gradually...give less kibble.. make chunks bigger when feeding until they get the hang of it... toss in half a rabbit or even a quarter at a time so there is less waste if they dont eat it before it goes off... if you wanna just make em eat.. leave it in whole.. they WILL eat eventually.... though some fe

my question wasn't so much about not having to dig to a ferret or rabbit perse' becaue i believe like you .. you need to have respect for your prey.. if we're going to hunt ... we best do it in the most efficient and humane way possible and NOT let the death of the animal be a waste .. so we DO dig to any that lay up... i use collars on mine so i can dig to which ever ferret if the need arises... the question really was the nature of these hobs .... like i said my hob is friendly with my jills and if i were to put him down to get the other ferret moving i dont see it working for me lol

I have a question regarding this old practice.. and the new ways its used.. assumably... a "line hob" was used with a line attached to find and shift a ferret that layed up... now the same system is used sometimes with a locator instead of a line which yeah i get it is safer and probably more reliable.. my question is this.. these hobs you use... are they housed happily with your other ferrets and its just in their nature to shift the lazy layabout down below? or are they a hob that is kept seperate so unfamiliar and more agressive to the ferrets below ground? i'd like to u

i remember reading a post regarding this exact problem on a fuzzy site... The jill ended up with a cyst causing this problem... http://www.ferretsforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?tid=3785

Yeah its just youthful exuberance.. i have three hob kits and two of them have rather scabby necks... just from playin too hard with each other...

So the OH and i have a lil permission about an hour from us down in Cornwall that we've been keen to try out for a while. We invited a friend and his son to come along who had never been out ferreting and it was nice to have some company! So after arriving at the field we get out the nets etc...and give the friends a crash course on setting nets... ( NOTE TO SELF... never let people who dont understand the horror of hours untangling poorly retrieved nets... pull nets for you lol ) we covered about 1/4 of the hedge and ran into the people who owned the OTHER side of our permissions hedge..

Mine are handled several hours each day.. and spoiled rotten... They also work like lil devils !!! CERTAINLY hasn't put them off biting rabbits lol but i agree.. tabasco would be useless.. and abusive!!!

Trays never worked brilliantly for me.. no matter the size.. they prefer to dig around and shove the tray out ofthe corner... i did however have this problem when introducing them to a larger area like you've done... as suggested above.. keep cleaning out the corners .. use a bit of antibacterial spray to get rid of the smell.. but make sure its wiped up good! i know its a bit fiddly.. but what works for me.. thank god i dont work out of the home! catch the ferrets asleep... then wake them up.. take them to where the poo is... give em a sniff ... as soon as one has gone... give

chicken wings or mince are usually what pet owners use to transition to raw... try mixing some mince into the kibble... or taking away the kibble so he must eat dinner.. what ever it is.. be warned though ... some ferrets are quite stubborn and can lose condition quite quickly if they dont eat for a few days... good luck

it's one of the jill's first season but the other is an old pro... both got tangled up.. and the older one is tiny enough to fit through a 4oz net and not touch the sides without the collar on lol we've got some heavier nets and i've been making some hemp ones.. we didn't take them out because we hadn't pegged them yet... so i'll try that..Thanks everyone!

Hi everyone.. i'm looking for a little advice.. we're finding our jills pushing through the nets when they exit the holes... this isn't a problem in itself.. but the collar tangles .. they get caught up.. mess up the net... cause a commotion etc etc etc.. The hobs dont bother..they see the net and either nose around the edge or go back down anything i can do about this? the nets are those green lightweight ones? i think its 4oz? would using heavier nets help? or is it something the jills will have to suss? I'm fairly confident in SOME hedges we ferret that they wont be going far..

dry cat food generally has a higher cereal/vegetable content and lower meat protien content than is needed by ferrets, however some of the better brand cat foods with 32% or higher meat based protien might be alright...

looks normal to me too.. but then they would know their ferret was looking different... just a little cool water.. bath the eye and watch for any gunk ... see a vet if it doesn't get better in a few days
-
Mind if i ask where from and what size? Sure i'm paying more than that... Matt we pay about that much .. we get it from Mole Valley Farmers

if you're looking for reliable medical advice about your ferret.. see a vet! if you're looking for an experienced eye to give you suggestions to the problem, causes, or treatment... see a pet forum... they take their ferrets to the vet regularily .. and would have much more information regarding these sorts of problems.. i'd suggest a moulting thing or a possible adrenal problem.. but i dont know much about hair loss in ferrets personally though with the current discussion on this forum about said pet owners.. i dont think you'll be getting their feedback on this one so easily..

not directed at anyone perse' .. just a general sorta comment

Is this the start of you keeping your Ferrets the way the PET owners do, lovely hanging baskets in your Ferret court. mmm ferrets of any sort.. pet or working enjoy tubes and tunnels and sleeping in hanging things.. often choosing them over a nest box in the heat of the day or a warm summer evening.. i know our hob much prefers the top hammock on the cat gym thats kept in their shed than the nest box in the summer. ... Has nothing to do with bein a Pet thing.. its just a ferret thing isn't it??

thanks do i just gut em and chuck em in whole thats what we do.. take out the intestines etc.. leave liver heart kidney and lung in place.. chuck it in

oh yes... squirrel is a fav delicacy here in our house... i have an adorable picture somewhere of 10 lil bino kits about 6 weeks old curled up INSIDE and around a carcass sleeping off a lovely feed lol

a great tip! we do this a lot... good enrichement too .. makes them tug and work for the food ...

Hi Kim, well done for switching to a natural diet... mine have rabbit mostly.. chicken and anything else the butcher tosses our way weekly including offal and bones etc... when we feed rabbit they skip the intestines and stomach as well... or pierce them and leave a mess LOL... we tend to give them gutted more often .. leaving in the liver, heart, kidneys and lungs etc... and what we are left with in the morning is a pile of fur ( not nearly enough to cover the rabbit though ) sometimes the pelvis bones or bigger back leg bones.. usually the feet... sometimes the spine though they u

i can believe it!! my 7 including 4 kits are easily demolishing 2 rabbits and a bit of kibble thats always in there ... maybe its to do with them being kits? luckily one of the guys who had a pair of our kits this spring insisted on paying by keeping us in rabbit for the summer LOL
