  1. Two schools of thought on this... Camp 1 : Ferrets have a very fast digestive tract... what enters one end will invariably leave the other end in 3 hours... they take this to mean that damage can be done to the ferret's system if food isn't available every 3 hours.... They suggest a constant full bowl of ferret complete dry kibble available 24/7 ... some will add meat to this every evening or a couple times a week as "treats" Camp 2 : Though domesticated, our ferrets are still very similar biologically to their wild cousins the polecats and should be fed as such. Obligate carnivores
  2. if you use the same call every time you go to feed or play with or handle your ferrets they will learn that call... it CAN work in the field if your ferret is very accustomed to coming to call... some guys rattle their keys.. some make that squeeky sound that imitates a rabbit or kit in distress ( depends on who you ask lol ) and some... like me.. who are unable to make that squeeky sound lol.. use a squeeky dog toy... even a dog training whistle would work... so long as you are consistant in its use... it MAY work in the field ... depending on how busy the ferret is and how well your p
  3. mine absolutely adore weasel crack...ermmm i mean ferretone... I heard that olive oil works as well for a bribe.. but none of mine were even interested! Its excellent for distraction purposes... ie cleaning ears... doing intros to new ferrets etc... as a suppliment .. i give it to my pregnant and nursing jills daily... and have noticed they stay in much better condition than those i've had with out ferretone.. and within aproximately 2-3 weeks i do notice a coat and nail difference in a new ferret who has never had it... worth the effort in my opinion!
  4. Meat... Fresh and frozen.. a variet from rabbit, chicken, offal mix i get from my pet store, and rodents (mice, rats etc) plus 24/7 access to dry ferret food and fresh water.. no need to soak it.. she's highly capable!!
  5. Sounds like a possibly blockage to me... any chance they are bedded or littered on woodchip? suggest a blockage to the vet... If he agrees this is a possiblity .. you can try a bit of petroleum jelly or a teaspoon of pumpking puree... failing the availability of either.. try hair ball removal paste you can get at the petstore.. these will grease his insides and help move a blockage along... good luck with the hob!
  6. maybe they are ashamed to post... as the information is commonly out there and known... that if they'd tended to their jills in season they wouldn't have lost them... it might not happen all that often.. with the increased care we give ferrets these days.. and i have never personally lost a jill in season... though i've either jabbed, spayed or bred them so i'm not the target of the poll... but i do know people who have...
  7. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1L-ODOURFRESH-PET-PL...%3A1%7C294%3A30 the above link.. to Mistral Cleaners is excellent! it dilutes up to 100:1 and so lasts for ages.. my bottle has lasted a year with weekly cleanings of a 4 x 10 ft shed... A powerful quaternary based cleaner, disinfectant and deodoriser. It effectively destroys a broad spectrum of bacteria, fungi and viruses at source. It kills odours and leaves a fresh fragrance. Safe to use on all water washable surfaces, floors, walls, cages, bedding, runs, carpets and drains. Ideal for usage in Kennels and catteries to
  8. need to get them to the vet... NOW... people on a forum cant give you the answer if you are worried for your ferrets call a vet!
  9. Cats are carnivores not herbivores or omnivores, same as a ferret. So how is veg soo bad for them when its put in cat food? FM A cat's digestive system is designed slightly differently from a ferrets... they have things that allow them to process the vegetable based protiens found in poor quality cat food.. though even that is NOT ideal... you can certainly tell the difference health wise between a cat fed with high quality food or a BARF diet vrs a cat eating crap food... think of it like people... sure ... our kids would LOVE hotdogs and mac and cheese for dinner every nig
  10. Ferrets are.. as we all know.. obligate carnivores... their guts aren't designed to deal with or absorb nutrients from vegetable matter whatsoever.. the proteins to be found in most ( certainly the cheaper brands) of cat food are vegetable based protiens.. which means the ferret will not absorb the problem nutrients it needs to live a long healthy life.. contrary to some's believe.. a ferret living to the ripe ole age of 4-5 isn't considered all that great!!! I also got a first hand look at the problem of NOT feeding sufficent whole prey items this past weekend... I was asked
  11. the best thing will be to find a foster jill for them.. it will offer the kits the best chance... hand rearing from this small is really difficult!! Puppy replacement forumla like lactol or cimicat will be your best bet here... mix it 4 to 1 with a little cream to fatten it up (this is my vets advice to me on the same question) you need to provide high fat low lactose suppliment.. feed every 2 hours and make sure to wipe their bottoms thoroughly with a wet bit of cotton to make them go.. because they cant on their own until about 3 weeks old ... first poos on their own generally comes
  12. Actually yes... our of 16 i will be hard pressed to keep two for myself... tentatively this lil hob has been promised to the owner of the Hob we bred from ... however.... if he turns it down lol this one WILL be staying with me lol
  13. Or the litter bratt LOL that was my thought Kay... He's doing well though.. largest of his litter and the only boy of 5...
  14. pre·co·cious Definition 1 : exceptionally early in development or occurrence ... whats the earliest you have seen a kits eyes open??? This little hob is 11 days old! stunned i was...
  15. exactly why i try to do the single level accomodations for my jills in kit... whew.. thank goodness you were there Julia!! fingers crossed for the lil guy... they're tough.. he may be just fine with a lil extra TLC!
  16. yeah thats what i thought ... good to know its just her mothering instincts... having her on cam is pretty cool though ... dont have to indulge my curiousity by openin her box lol
  17. Thanks for the reassurance guys!! I'll leave her to it ... and let her get on with being a mum... behavior question before i go... i have only been in the cage for a quick peek while she was out getting a bit of rabbit for breakfast... and to change litter and food ... as soon as she sees me she takes my hand ( NOT Biting.. just holding and tries to pull me into her box.... i tell her no i cant go in there with her lol.. and back away as quickly and unobtrusively as possible... is this an agitated behavior? or simply her wanting everything ..including me in her nest where
  18. ok.. so you have 2 litters born within 24 hours of each other.. one jill has 5... the other 12 12 is a bit of a handful for a jill... so at what point would you consider possibly fostering a couple to the other jill? do you just wait and see? see if the jills becomes overwelmed? wait to see if a kit isn't getting enough milk or the jill starts losing condition? or is it just best to make the choice now and see if the other jill would accept a few fosters? advice needed on this please... both jills delivered well and all kits are healthy...
  19. nice size litter Julia.. well done to your little jill... wish them lots of luck growing big and strong!
  20. Some say its a risk... that they may take exception and eat the litter once they become mums... But some have great success and very healthy litters with jills who share the responsibility, cleaning, caring and if they are due the same time nursing each others litter... the only draw back in that is telling the litter apart if you have future plans for breeding its up to you... probably would be just fine.. but be aware that there are SOME risks
