  1. Ahems... as average american as it gets lol.. i say the pledge, stand for the flag and cry over apple pie and the national anthem... does that qualify as american enough ?? ANYWAYS... my ferrets live outside in a 10 x 4 ft shed, plus a 6x4 aviary my DH is building, dust extracted wood shavings for the floor (cause i'm soft) they eat Rabbit, venison, chicken, and lamb what ever is about and handy really, They work damn hard in the winter and chase down Many a bunny for us which keeps them fed almost through the summer... and yeah.. bein a girly type girl i drag em off to the shows in t
  2. lol i think you'd kill me if i said we were gonna miss it lol
  3. Its all that testosterone surging through there bodys , there randy as hell as well yeap .. testosterone poisoning at its best... Did they get along before the mating season came along ??
  4. some people believe there is a fatal gene present in Silvers and BEW's often resulting in still births and other defects. As such it is also believed to be irresponsible to breed genetically faulty ferrets and spreading the genetic markers that cause these problems. The silver colour in silvers is due to roaning. If this is extreme you have a BEW. Roaning is the presence of white hairs in an otherwise coloured coat.
  5. Looks like a well done job!! Just dont put it down in the hedge eh?
  6. some one asked why youtube was allowed to show this and why youtube wasn't shut down... youtube.com is a community policed video hosting site.. they count on the people who view the content to decide what is and what is NOT acceptable in most regards. If this video offends you, then please do sign up and report it and youtube will quickly react and review it and take down the offensive clip. This is an american site and as such its run democratically... have your say ... it DOES count!!!
  7. Hi Ditch... just to say.. more than possible... one of my jills came into season very early january ... she easily could have 10 week old kits by now... They are housed outside in a 10 x 4 shed with only dim natural lighting... so its possible... with the way the climate is changing, I wont say thats not possible, but have you got hob's, that came into season too? Hi, at the time they were still all housed together in their court... figuring the hob would just take care of things we left them together .. He's just coming up to a year as well, and brought her out of seaso

  9. Don't undersell yeself. Not much wrong with that response at all! hehe i'm learnin!
  10. Even odder thing... In the States MOST people never take their ferrets outside and wouldn't DREAM of housing them out there... afraid they'll catch something... CD or rabies or similar even though they are required by law in most places to be vaccinated.. But in general over there poor breeding and poor husbandry has led to very poorly ferrets ... People are constantly amazed at how robust and BIG my ferrets are comparitively...
  11. we're about 15 miles south of you ollie.. have you had a good hunting seaon? lol we did great after cutting back the hedges that just would NOT die this winter... would kill for some of them nice ground buries we see posted from up north!
  12. i do cause i'm a bit squeemish when i feel the neck pop.. and i'm afraid if i get too squeemish i might not do it as humanely as possible. I grew up shooting animals all the time, which when done right is very humane, but by hand you have to be confident or the poor thing will suffer, so i choose the more confident option for me which is a quick Hard blow and done Yeah i know its a girly options lol.. but i'm a GIRL lol
  13. Ferrets do VERY well on a good RAW meat diet, the only suggested change I personally would make to what you already do... is adding whole carcass ( bones and all) rabbit ( which seems to have everything they need) or chicken wings .. they need certain levels of calcium and the bones keep the teeth nice and white! The only good reason i can see in the dry complete food is convenience and possibly to avoid rot or flies laying eggs in it durin hot summer months, but this can be avoided by feeding in the cooler evenings and removing uneaten portions before the heat of the day. Also its b
  14. Hi, My husband was interested in getting a couple ophaned lambs and feeding them up for christmas time.... we were wondering though what rules and regulations are there as to how they are kept and what we need to do DEFRA wise or what have you to make them acceptable at the abbatoir ? We aren't interested in doing anything shady, and probably wont bother at all if its too complicated .... just looking for a bit of advise really thanks Heather
  15. The new mk3 collar uses 393 silver oxide, but these will not work in my old micro collar. The only ones that work are the same size, but in alkaline version. I think it's because they are a different voltage! They're on ebay, listed as AG5........ looks like i got a bum collar then we tried an AG5 and it DID fit.. but nothin happened. Granted the guy wasn't sure it worked as he'd never tried it.. only used the terrier collar which works fine lol but we dont NEED one of them .. figures eh ? Also... the "terrier collar" locator is bigger of course, but deben lists it a
  16. can anyone tell me what battery the Mk1 8ft micro takes ? ... thanks in advance
  17. Hi, i've seen a few posts lately of missing ferrets and this was posted to one of the other forums i read. My college has had an unspayed polecat jilll in. She was found as a stray in on the road side, not entirely sure where she was found as Ive not spoken to the person that brought her in but it was apparently quite local to the college (college is in Penkridge Staffordshire). Currently she is being held in quarantine and the manager of the animal care unit is hoping to introduce her to the college business, however I cant help but think that someone is missing this little girl, so I tho
  18. Thats a very kind offer , hope you enjoy it i think i will kay ive enjoyed when ive been took out by friends i took my little whip/grey.just a tad worried about losing somone elses ferrets Thats always a concern, and will remain one as you become attached to your own. But a locator and collar( put it on tighter than you think it should be !) add a bit of reassurance.
  19. cheers bud looking forward to it ,start work on the new kennels, and ferret house for the ferret im going to buy a 6x4 wood shed in a run of 4x12 You'll have some happy ferrets with that sort of set up..
  20. Kits are bred in the spring/summer you should be able to find them cheap or free in the next couple months. Kits are generally about 8weeks + before leaving the jill. Handle them Every single day as much as possible. Be prepared to teach them not to nip as its just a ferret thing, some never outgrow it but with patience and perseverance you will have a very well handled animal. The other stuff i'll leave for the more experienced hunters in the group.. good luck with your ferrets
  21. Well said Stubby!...I've just discovered this fecking ridiculous topic and I can't believe what I'm reading ... A muzzle would not stop the ferret staying down and worrying the rabbit so you would possibly still have to dig if you were impatient. Maybe I'm over suspicious but!...When a new member comes on and asks strange or provocative questions I wonder if there's a hidden agender,...if you get my drift! Particularly when they have a name like kill_that_rabbit, or whatever it is. I might be wrong, it could just be that he's new to the game and a bit naive. If that's the ca
  22. lol i totally agree.. nothin magic about it! but a useful handling tool if you need it
  23. you're right.. for my lot anyways... the keys wouldn't work... they aren't gonna hear the keys down a hole.. but that squeek.. brings them out of a dead sleep in the hutch or dashing back with bunny in mouth (only once that happend lol) the dog whistle would in theory work better as the sound will travel better, the idea being blow the whistle in exactly the same way each time you go feed and offer rewards for coming to the sound...
  24. if you have jills.. give it a try .. most guys can make that squeek.. or steal a dog toy... thats what ours is. i'd advise you to try it from the other side of the closed hutch door at first though.. my most gentle jill attacked at the sound for the first couple months. which we trained out of her with a treat for coming instead.
