  1. I suspect the 'Rape Clause' is a media hype / pre-election red herring. I may have got completely the wrong end of the stick here but, as I understand it, the government is cutting child tax credits to only 2 per family, (children born after April 2017) with the reasoning that 'People on Benefits' should have to consider / suffer the consequences of having more children than they can afford to keep, just as 'Ordinary Working Families' do. There are 4 exemptions to this.... •Multiple births •Adoption from local authority •Friend or family child coming to live with you •Child conceiv
  2. I'm no expert (Haha! quite the opposite!) but I learn a lot from these threads so I'm interested to read other people's experiences. How old is the pup? What was the situation when he snarled/ growled?
  3. Sounds a bit itchy..... Lovely pic.. I always had one here in my little garden for years but not for the last few.... dunno why it/ they stopped coming, there are billions of snails and one less cat.
  4. If you're just talking about basic obedience, lead walking, living in the house, getting the dog tuned into wanting to do what you want it to do, then 'marker' training (like clicker, but without needing a clicky thing) has worked for me and my dog. The dog does a desired behaviour, (whether you asked for it or he just did it) you 'Mark' that desired behaviour (I say 'YES') and reward. More useful has been just reading through training threads on here. It will obvs depend on your dog, and what you want from it. Then figure out how to make that happen, with what you have (you, your dog, yo
  5. Partial though I am to gravelly voiced male vocalists, I've never really 'got' Tom Waits. However, a thread on the lurchers reminded me of this song.
  6. Thanks for the heads up. I didn't know about this, so will be doing a bit of research. Run Free Bella and hope Martha's recovery continues. Best wishes to you and yours.
  7. pain in the arse if the dogs go near them horrid things set a match to the gorse i say Lol. That was my first reaction at the time but, as we don't live near our materials (few items of scrap) the gorse and the snakes are both quite handy guardians. Re dogs, they tend to ignore that area (maybe because the rabs keep clear too, and there are more interesting places to stick their noses in). Adders around was a signif part of my childhood but only one dog bite, in many years.
  8. Few years ago, Himself saw a writhing wriggling mass of them during mating season. They live in our 'may be useful one day' materials area. (Which has gorse growing all round it........) Occasionally see them soaking up the rays on a sheet of wrinkly tin. Never risked getting close enough to photograph them, though.
  9. Just wondering, how high off ground/ hedge was he??? (Bit worried now about cutting the gorse back!) Love the second pic especially.
  10. Amazing, moving, extraordinary film. Met a coupla South Africans who said it really was like suddenly it turned out jimi Hendrix or Elvis wasn't dead. Such a strange thing.
  11. What worked for me was using full/ desktop version of YouTube.
  12. Trump's always been a nutter. The lefties you talk to are obvs tossers as none of this is funny. Having said that, I'm old enough to have read Raymond Briggs 'when the wind blows', so I've got some tins of soup and peanut butter in the cupboard. All the world's a stage....
  13. Quite apart from being a cissy, this sort of thing is what puts me off the idea of animal husbandry. All the effort and worry and responsability. Having said that, totes jealous and admiring. Can't you get together with mr gain or someone who knows charcuterie and do a thl line of delicious things?
  14. Dunno if he's standing naked but he DEFINITELY doesn't wear a bathrobe. f****n crazy times.
  15. http://webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/20130123162956/http://www.defra.gov.uk/rural/hunting/inquiry/evidence/lurcherclubs2.htm There's another doc on this archive specifically pertaining to lurchers. . As most people posting on this thread are older grownups, perhaps (probs) you're all already familiar with them, or anyway the info contained. Found them both through NL&RC which haven't seen mentioned so maybe defunct or not an org you value. For me (a non hunter who isn't against hunting) they were very interesting . Wh'evs. Not my fight. I'm a bit more 'hello clouds, hello sky' re na
  16. What a cool thing to have. Looking forwards to updates.
  17. What about if a lot (50% plus) of what you burn is offcuts/ scrap including tanalised? The ash is always lovely powdery grey no evidence of sticky tar. (Admittedly sometimes it doesn't smell lovely woodsmoky but then would assume not use that ash).
  18. Unusual that mate, I always thought the reason galagos had to be registered was that kennel situated in rural Spain were literally abandoned during the close season and the dogs were left to fend for themselves...as in a registry to source the owners / trainers. Can't see many U.K. Lurcher men being keen to log address details and what they keep there for a variety of reasons Most people on the street have no idea what a lurcher is, which in my eyes is not a bad thingYeah they may not know what a lurcher is, but they've def heard of one. 'Is it a lurcher?' (Sympathetic sad face). Is it a Rescu
  19. Ooh that sounds interesting. (Did you hear it from someone who grows fruit trees?) Would it depend on soil ph? (Am total dunce gardener).
