Sounds like an exciting trip mate, plenty of freedom. I've not been to the states yet probably wait until the boys are a little older. South appeals although I've family in Vermont, don't think it would be much fun Christmas time lol. My standard thing is try and be spontaneous, at the same time as thoroughly organising everything you definitely want to do , I use Google review , TripAdvisor etc, with young kids I can't be particularly spontaneous outside of a random food or crabbing adventure lol. Make the most of it , plan rest days as sounds a long trip , I know you'll have a blast, also I'd rather plan to buy clothes and tackle and bring it home take empty cases lol. I'll send you my sizes ..

Lol... I know your size!! Lol

Yeah being spontaneous is pretty much how we go about most things mate, there's an outlive plan sometimes, not always lol..

Agred on rest days as well..thars my problem, I don't like "wasting time" lol

It comes to quick regards the kids mate, I miss those days of them coming everywhere with me, but this our new life I suppose...

Word of advice, avoid the big name tourist traps in the south , there better then the north but still pretty lame . Don't be scared to stop and walk around small towns most are pretty friendly...if you have a molecule of self preservation you'll be able to know which ones aren't. Honestly though most of the South , even the bad parts are still pretty polite, hell I've been in some pretty bad spots and have just told someone " look bro I'm lost I'm not from around here could you show me where to go" lot of the times they'll get you out , especially if they know your foreign because they don't want any extra BS in the area.

Definitely would recommend driving though Louisiana if you can

We're planning a trip to America for a bit of tour around..

Plan is... 10 days over Xmas with kids (who are adults lol) brother, sister in law etc... renting a place on the Florida Keys, hiring a self drive boat and mainly fishing for most of it... @green lurchers i know you've spent a fair bit of time out there fishing, Im looking at Marathon to stay, villa with a boat dock, general sea fishing, spinning, live baits etc...

We take everyone back to airport then me and the wife do 4 or 5 weeks touring the southern states, planning nashville for New Yeaes eve.. across to memphis then down the Mississippi to New Orleans, stopping where we fancy etc..

We're leaving flights home open, will head towards Texas, want to do a few days on a working ranch, there is no final destination as such, we can book a flight on fairly short notice from nearest airport...

Gonna hire a truck, stop in motels or maybe short stays in Air bnbs... its a very loose plan with only the first 10 days booked and planned (because of the family coming)...

The original plan was a 5 week tour around South America, but that's been put on the back burner at the minute..

Now the kids aren't kids we're planning a few more of these types of trips...

Any advice on the southern states, dos and do nots... must sees etc much appreciated.

Get plane home after the 10 days due “unforeseen work circumstances “  reschedule with the mrs for a few months later in the summer  for when the World Cup is on that you knew nothing about and kill 2 birds with one stone lol.

sound like you’ll be in your element fishing wise alone  plenty to go at.

Pretty much most of the time in florida will be fishing Sean...lol..get Fin, my brother and daughters boyfriend on a self drive getting lost in the mangroves lol... the girls will be fine..I might just have to be present on Marie's bday on the 19th for an hour or 2 lol..

Yeah Rickshaw has messaged on this thread and very kindly offered a meet up, hunt etc... its 6 months away yet, but I'm trying to book a few bits after florida, without being too rigid, if you know what I mean..

Thank you mate, we're not into touristy things as such, besides a couple of music venues I'm hoping the rest will be off the beaten track and not overly busy lol..

We planned to drive down the missippi from Memphis into Louisiana and then travel across Louisiana into Texas.. I don't want to be in a rush to leave somewhere if we like it, hence not booking the flight home..it might be we don't make certain places, but will take your advice and make sure we make Louisiana...cheers

Yeah Gracelands is somewhere I'd like to see, and I'd enjoy some of the blues bars as well...but perhaps I'd be happier out of memphis listening to blues somewhere traditional... just hoping we stumble on the things we are picturing in our heads lol... to be honest most times we ho away we end up finding the things we like, no problem talking to anyone, happy in most situations so it makes being accepted into others company quite easy..

We're just back from 10 days in Barbados, got the number of 2 local lads, 1 has offered to take me cliff fishing in the north of the island next time we are over...it looks a bit hairy but up for it lol... the other offered to cook for us at his family home, as he wanted us to try really authentic carribean food, both have messaged me since just pleasantries... neither wanted or asked us for anything, just decent people who we got on with... those are the experiences I like to take away from a holiday...

feck i love America, we went to florida yrs ago and it was great, done the touristy stuff too, but i made a day for bass fishing and loved every min of it, go on the swamp boats with the v8 engined fans they are an experience, we stayed in Kissimmee, and the bass pro shop near international drive is a smasher, i regret not emigrating to tge USA yrs ago, for look at what we have become over here as a nation. Youll love it.

Yes, id be more east coast to mid west, feck those liberal states, florida would be grand to work in as the hurricanes create plenty and live in Pennsylvania lol, the cooler climates would suit me, spent 6 weeks in minniesota in the 90s feck it was the best holiday ive ever been on, heard its like somalia now, the feckin liberal's have ruined it too
