From what I understand Mauritius and the Chagos Islands were part of the UK’s British Indian Ocean Territories. They were separate countries but administered by the same Foreign Office department. Mauritius gained independence from the UK during our “retreat from east of Suez” in 1968, but we kept the Chagos islands. Mauritius NEVER owned them or had a claim to them but in recent years decided to ask the International Court of Justice to rule on who owned them The court gave a NON - BINDING judgement that the Uk should negotiate with Mauritius about handing them over. The Tory’s started the negotiations but when David Cameron was Foreign Secretary he said there was no basis in law to give them up and put a stop to the negotiations. Then along came Starmer and Lord Hermer, both human rights lawyers and their pal and colleague Phillips Sands who works for the Mauritius government and decided to give the islands to Mauritius and pay £36 BILLION to Mauritius!!!! Thats my understanding of it Cheers. Edited 9 hours ago by chartpolski

Almost 100% but none of them live on the islands, we kicked them of when we let the Americans use Diego Garcia. The Chagos islanders now mainly live in Mauritius and Crawley, but almost none of them were born on Chagos but would like to live on their ancestral lands. Mauritius and Starmer are using UN rulings to take over/give away the islands, but with delicious irony, the UN has now said the islanders human rights and wishes should be taken into consideration, Leaving the human rights lawyer Starmer with an almost impossible dilemma; give the Chagos islands to Mauritius and trample on the islanders human rights or ignore a UN court and not give the islands away !! Cheers.
