Does anyone know of a birders app where you can record species seen? Occasionally watch some guy on youtoob who targets around 275 species a year, but a lot of them are obscure American ducks and Asian sub-species etc. etc., and he puts in some mileage to get to that. Wondered how many I’d see just going about my business. Think if I got 75 I’d be chuffed at that, would be good to have an app to tick them off.

I had a really interesting evening caught all these birds in the app also a common nighthawk never had one of them before and a rare according to the app common firecrest, also see a green woodpecker

People on the meateater podcast have been raving about it . You hold your phone out with the app open and recording and it will tell you every bird noise around you and identify each bird . If theirs

Black bird my favourite, for such a common bird a lot just take it for granted but the variations in it,s song are brilliant,,,, love  hearing to great tits too ,,ya know springs on its way

Of the raptors I’ve had kestrel and buzzards, but been wondering how many more I could get. I tried the app on some noisy sparrowhawks at a nest sight last year but it didn’t recognise them. I reckon peregrine would be straightforward enough, and ospreys. Often see red kites, hen harriers and the odd merlin, but don’t recall hearing them call. Merlin is a good catch though.

That is a good catch mate. As far as bird's of prey go i often pick buzzards and twany owls up on the app.

The merlin app keeps a list my daughter is all over it, tells you how many species in our area then logs them as she gets them sorry I don’t even have an iPhone so not much help but know it can be done

Thanks for that, I thought Merlin only listed birds identified by call. You can actually log sightings on your ‘life list’ if you create an account.., which I did. I’m up to ten just on todays, including a tawny owl and buzzard this morning.
I made a list a while ago of species I’ve had in the garden, it stands at 31.
