If you fit a split charger so the engine will charge the starter battery then switch to the leisure battery’s once it’s charged they will always be full when you arrive and one of these just clipped to the battery’s once you get there should keep you going unless your Planning on living in it, also the more battery’s you have the more you can store the energy, 200 amp hours would be Lots for a weekender 400 upwards if your living in

The money you spend doing it including your time, Its cheaper and on average and possibly better build quality to buy one already done, Coach built that is, Insurance is a nightmare as it will only be classed as a van and wont cover anything you put into it, If it gets nicked you will only get the basic cost of the van,  If its light goods then the DVLA will not change it over to PLG and then over to a camper van,

I did a VW T5 conversion with elevating roof with rock n roll bed and full kitchen . Just the build was around 8k . I had DVLA change the logbook from commercial to

motorcaravan  .This was about 10 years ago  ,they have changed the criteria now by not recognising an elevating roof. However if you have a high top commercial van and want to convert it to a camper add side windows, cooking facilities, bed, seats & decals on van to make it look like a camper
Theres a good chance it will be passed as a motor caravan . If not it’ll be passed as a van with windows  you’ll still be able to insure with specialist / campervan insurance company .

At a cost yes. If its not on the V5 as the body type they will allow then you have no chance of changing the class.
