The cost of smoking to the UK Government is approximately £12.6 billion a year, made up of £1.4 billion spent on social care for smoking related care needs, £2.5 billion spent on NHS services and £8.6 billion of lost productivity in businesses.

Every year around 78,000 people in the UK die from smoking, with many more living with debilitating smoking-related illnesses. Smoking increases your risk of developing more than 50 serious health conditions.

on top of this you have the cost of policing the import of illegal and sometimes dangerous fags/bacci and then the fact smoking is probably the biggest gateway drug in the world .... not really a harmless vice is it

Aye and alcohol is estimated at 21 billion ?

So almost double.

Out of curiosity would you support a ban on cars that do more than 70mph, alcohol, high sugar and high fat foods and energy drinks etc ? Or is it just specifically smoking ?

what need is there for a car that does over 70 in the uk?

alcohol; yeah i can see the benefits of a ban on it.

sugar they've put an additional tax on it but like high fat foods, some people will always require it as part of their diet.

banning smoking is most definately a beneficial thing; especially when the ban (like nz) is designed to stop people starting in the first place. what are the benefits of people smoking?

Yes ! Nothing major personally but they can be f***ing dangerous animals. Have had a few emotional moments with cows and new born calves, usually when they have f****d off into the scrub or woods to calve and you don’t realise they’ve had a calf and hidden it and end up between the two. And those ones deffo don’t like dogs ! Other than that the biggest risk I find is getting kicked or crushed on the pens or just good old fashioned trampled in the field ?

Luckily all of the cattle on this particular block would have been bucket reared so are mostly pretty quiet.

I saw a program, some farmer on it recounted a tale of a dairyman crushed to death by a bull. I think cows here would get frostbite on their udders with the windchill. I got thrown off a cow once when I tried to ride it in India, never trusted them since.

It kills people off. That’s one benefit.

I don’t really believe that it’s about the benefit or not, but I struggle with being told what I can or cannot do if it mainly effects me.

I would be a lot more supportive of the removal of NHS access for certain afflictions.

As in - if the cost of smoking is lithely due to self inflicted illness being a drain on the NHS - then if smoking is why make you ill you pay for yourself. Same with obesity etc.

With rights come responsibilities.

problem is they could never impose that, we would have to go like the yanks and each have private medical insurance. most issues people face are normally technically self/work inflicted; right the way from things like smoking/ obesity to stuff like joint issues
