Back in November I took a punt on some reels at an auction. I only had crappy photos to go on, but the Mitchell caught my eye. To save postage and customs charges they went to a friend's in Lincolnshire and from there to a customer's in Cleveland. They have smuggled them over along with some Flatpack mole traps.

Given that the ABU is over 50 years old and the Mitchell around 70 years old I'm chuffed to bits with them.

My cousin had Abu and Mitchell reels, back when. I must say; To this day I hold a memory for the Mitchell's. They just had something about them I don't s'pose we'll ever see again.

Automatic bail arm, decent gear box , I waited a few years to get my Wilson Avon rod and a Mitchell reel....

I bought an ABU 506 with the money from my paper round and Saturday job. It is well used so the new one can replace it. The Mitchell is the same model used by Richard Walker to land the record carp in 1953. I have quite a few old Mitchells including another half-bail from a couple of years after this one. The area where Mitchells were made was traditionally a watch and clock making centre. There are around 6 or 7 other reel making companies from the same or nearby towns, some of them better than Mitchell in some respects.

I have three of these in various models. They are as smooth as silk despite having been made in the 1940's.
