To be fair, he was the double of Suttclife, and a Mackem ! It was only because he could prove he was working in Saudi at the time of some of the murders, he was dropped from the inquiry's! Cheers. I Work with an old boy who experienced the same thing.... Looked the double but had a thick valleys accent
tatsblisters 10,945
Wonder what happened to Sonia. A lad from Rotherham who had black hair and Engelbert Humpadink side burns who worked night shifts was questioned by the police at the time . How Sutcliff escaped for so long must be down to police blunders .

He should have been done for accessory to murder ! But yeah, the police didn't exactly come out of it looking good ! Cheers.

Greb147 6,810
My old mate was a chimney sweep and after a shift he always forgot to clean out his eyes properly. One Friday after work we went to the local for a pint, one guy stared at my mate uneasily as it looked like he was wearing mascara. "What's that on your eyes, are you a tranny?" "No shaggy, that's soot-Cliff."

When you think that Jeremy Bamber almost got away with it, the detective looking into the Shipman deaths missed obvious clues and the Ripper was allowed to go free because the OIC was convinced that the real suspect was from the north-east. Then you've got the Birmingham 6 and others who might well have been guilty but the police made sure that they were. It was a bad time and I still don't think that lessons have been properly learned. If it wasn't for modern technology many of today's major crimes would go unsolved.

chartpolski 27,741
He was charged with and found guilty of perverting the course of justice. He only served half his sentence, four years. Not the punishment he deserved. Cheers.

It is supposed to be an inducement for them to behave and so reduces the amount of prison officers needed to run the prison. I agree that his crime should have resulted in punishment, but the idiot in charge was also guilty of gross negligence and as usual, nothing was ever done about that. Oldfield had acted criminally in the M62 inquiry and in the Ripper case bullied officers into following his personal hunches instead of the evidential trail.

Did you ever know Pete Smith NP, he was a young bobby involved who later went on to become a formidable DS and someone I crossed swords with once or twice
