 The dinners were sort of so, so. cabbage,   yuck, disgusting. Swede, yuck. Some meat was ok some was boot leather. The puddings were nice. Semolina with strawberry jam. Sago/ tapioca. Jam tart and custard. The Apple pie was spoilt by cloves like nails in it. So hot. There was the stigma of thowe that got free school dinners but no one seemed to care about it. When I went to the next school I  didn't like school dinners and took sandwiches.  Those that had sandwiches ate them in a classroom and as soon as  finnished you could leave the room and get out  playing football or go in the gym.

My mate tommy's mam died when he was young,he was brought up by a father who didn't have much time for him or his sister,both were a little wild due to the lack of adequate parenting,he was an incredible shoplifter,had a rip inside his blazer into which he slipped everything but the kitchen sink,we did a runner once out of woolworths when it was in pennywell,he was caught and got the cane at school I heard years later through the grapevine he was still in sunderland and had become an alcoholic.

Third of a pint milk bottles, freezing in winter when the blue tits pecked the caps off to steal the cream. Warm and sour in the summer when it had been left in the sun.

Load of my teachers lived on the same rd in the posh part of town lol, every Saturday morning we would wake up from camping out in the woods and go rob their milk and fruit juice,some used to have the ready mixed milkshakes in the glass milk bottles..... favourite school dinner was beef casserole/stew with a big old dumpling on top, jam cake with coconut and custard for afters

Used to love school dinners.  Was always good food in my school.  Some days I'd waste it before dinner but usually always had enough for a good feed dinner time . Did used to plough through it tho so I could get out and play football . Remember once some boys distracted the vegetarian kid while others pushed chicken in his sandwich . He went absolutely mental when he spotted chicken in there .

can guarantee non of the meat was halal ! No special gluten free alternative ! Just good honest grub !
