welshphil 287
6 hours ago, Born Hunter said: I think it’s far too early to tell. Despite my criticism this is a great step towards a good outcome. My view is that tactically this has shown what the US is capable of once again to the world. Stuff that no other nation could even begin to dream of. But then I don’t think any of that was really in doubt. Strategically however I don’t think this has delivered anything very positive for the US (or us in the UK). It has seriously damaged almost all US strategic relations/alliances. Literally everyone has been politically attacked by POTUS and SecWar. After at least a year of being threatened, belittled and economic attacks. You might think that these alliances are meaningless but americas strength is in leveraging being a strong ally. That’s now seriously threatened. They’d need 100 CSGs to do what their current alliances allow them to do. The petrodollar is in question. It’s backed by military protection. That same military just put all the Arab states under attack. That petrodollar system allows the US to overleverage their economy, to fund that military. It also allows them to project power without expensive carriers through an extensive system of regional bases. And even with all this power and tactical success they were clearly rattled by the Hormuz situation. It showed cracks in even the might US war machines capabilities. Extending the damage, will be countries now not seeing the US as a reliable supplier of weapons. They’ve made it clear that they will use whatever they can to manipulate ‘allies’ and that needs to be considered a serious risk. For instance if the yanks said “f**k the uk you’re not having anything off us anymore” then we’d have essentially no more jets for our carriers and no more Tomahawks for our subs making our very flashy and expensive carriers almost useless. Further to this I assumed at the start control of the Straight would starve China, and in fact the opposite happened. It starved us! And consequently sanctions were lifted on states that are actual adversaries, total self harm with that one. I know you don’t see Russia as adversarial but it certainly didn’t help us. Regime change has not happened, the faces may have changed but the regime has survived. The Kurds want no part in doing the hard work, and why would they after decades of being f****d over by the US (see how this shit comes back to haunt you when reputation matters) and it doesn’t seem like the citizen uprising has come to anything. Nothing like an existential threat to get factions rallying around the same flag! Extremists will have been given a huge recruitment boost in the same way IS came out of the shitfest that was Iraq. And finally, now the regime and every other malign regime out there knows for a categorical fact they need a nuclear deterrent. Simply maintaining the knowledge and tools to spin one out when escalation starts is not enough, you need a deployable system now. But as I say it’s too early. I think this cease fire is a great step and hopefully Trump will use the intelligent members of his administration to do what he does well, make a deal. Brilliant post!

I’ve told you before about your propensity for gross exaggeration The didn’t hit King Abdullah Air base in Jeddah, I know this because I worked there for many years and my grandson lives within sight of it, so I’m sure I would have heard . They also didn’t hit the base in the mountains at Taif or the base on the Red Sea coast at Yanbu, so there’s three bases in the Middle East, all hosting American and British forces, Taif is run by BAE as part of the Typhoon Project and Iran didn’t hit. So, once again, do some research before talking nonsense Cheers.
