Your Favorite Working Terrier Past Or Present..

It's a lot about how they're brought up, socialised and entered.

I find it baffling how some lads always have workers, and others always have nothing and are chopping and changing bloodlines all the time. Instead of looking in their kennels for a problem they should take a good look in the mirror.

If I could have any dog back from the past it would be a dog I bred myself called Barney that I gifted to a good mate at the time-I bred a litter for myself from him to my tiny bitch.the last time I

Good breeding with a dash of luck .

So far so good long way to go yet-watched video-reikers looked particularly impressive-bitches seem to be clocking faster than dogs

Yes, a long way to go and if they got the frost that we got things could be delayed a bit.

Did you see "Many Clouds" beating the mighty "Thistlecrack" yesterday.

Proves that dogs and chickens are not the only game animals. We always knew Many Clouds was game but yesterday he proved that he was dead game.

If it's a dog you could turn back time and use again it'd have to be Smithy!

Would it not make more sense to get his sire and dam ?
breed to the dog that produced the bad ass.. story I was told too Cooney..

Yes, the old saying is "Don't go to the Champion, go to the father of the Champion."
Just to be devils advocate Neil. The father is a good all round dog, the son is Top Class. What if its the mother of the champion whos throwing the goods? By using the father you've bred off a good all round dog instead of using the top class son who contains the champion genes from his mother....
You're both right really.

I don't think Bo produced a lot outside of the Jeep litter but Honeybunch certainly did

Be cause Bo was,a known cur that quit in front of 300 people and should never had been bred.. call me crazy, but, if I had of owned Finleys Ch. Bo,there would never had been a jeep, Charlie, missy, etc.. Bo would have been pushing daisies after he quit to Vindicator
maybe he just met a better dog?what drugs were each on/if any?lots of factors we mightnt know about-did i hear a rumour jeep was by cottons bullet or was that Bo?its funny the way bulldog men connect what they own to some dog from 40 odd years ago-must go out and walk my newdown heather line greyhound lol.
You see, more recently both lotto and the other ch we're damn good bulldogs, and Homer Balboa was a dog of the year... but titere finished them all.

Vindicator is widely considered one of the best ever.

Duran uttered 'no mad'

There's levels to everything. Sometimes you just meet a great. Not many dogs at all are truly truly dead game

No mad????? He was very mad trust me.... ?

Am no expert for sure! I actually dont think its as easy as "Use the great dogs father" or "the bitch is more important". (Not saying anyone has suggested that). Obviously both parents need to be good workers, well bred (same line if possible) & good constitution/build/size (generally are if good workers). A lot of thought must go into each terriers siblings, parents, grandparents etc. Their work ethic & what they've produced etc. And then try and work out where the working gene is originating from most - either parent, grandparent etc. ie. Who's dominant genes are best throwing good workers. And then when you find a clic between two terriers producing the goods which then continues with different crosses & generations then grab it & zone in on it as best you can, keeping as close as to it as possible. But not afraid of a close outcross when the time arises. Again just my opinion but am definitely open to other ideas. Everydays a school day! Dont think anyone has a magic formula, can safely say they know it all & can produce top class stuff all the time! You can only do your best & a bit o luck never hurt anyone!

i dont know Neil-look at coursing dogs-adios alonso responsible for nearly 1/4 of the field in clonmel next weekend-wouldnt take a free cover off his father(janey macaroo)

Just out of interest TinyTiger, do you know anything about Adios Alonso's mothers reputation as a brood and was she well bred ?

What do you fancy yourself for the Nationals ?

I looked at a few results recently and seen a cup won by another Adios Alonso.

she was a half sister to a derby winner(who went on to be a top stud dog) and an irish cup winner(who did well enough at stud from limited opportunities)-if you trace back ,the damline produced the track english derby winner im slippy...id fancy jamacia judy for the oaks..wi can riki or reikers island for the derby...blades of fire(a brother of reikers island)is the fastest in it but i dont think hell last the 3 days

Good going TT, your fancies still in and Blades Of Fire can last 2 days at least and is the new Fav.

Just for fun, if you had a chance to breed to any working terrier past or present, which terrier would you use for the breeding and why?

My old retired Beddy bitch, ive owned better digging terriers, better earth terriers, yet she gave me more working options than any other terrier ive ever owned. The main thing with her is she was a producer and every terrier here now, apart from the Lakey,is directly bred down from her and all carry her work ethic and ethos. The best thing i can say about her is id swap little thats she,s produced for her.

What a horse I honestly did back him what a pitty we couldnt see him for the rest of the year and what he may have achieved. A very game horse by any standards.

Your spot on RH some people are kennel blind and some will never understand what it takes to get the best from what they have, breeding from the right stuff is only half the battle, you need a regular system from when there born to when they are entered, then if a certain dog doesnt work you cant blame yourself, this goes for all working, sporting breeds of animals. I have my methods, and I stick to them.

Have jamacia and reikers island in a double-knowing my luck one of them will break out of the kennell tonight..every dog still left has a chance..bottom of the oaks is razor sharp(j.j is in the top)

Hard luck on your double but a bloody good call on the Derby.

Are the 2 winners belly brothers ?
