3/4 Gh 1/4 Beddy. Why Not ?

I saw Garry Hoskers Spud work on a few occasions it was a bit short on pace, but it certainly caught a lot of rabbits, what it lacked in pace it made up for in brains and drive, it could hunt up a rabbit and pick it from its seat time and time again, it was a brilliant marker for ferreting and would work stone walls like no other dog i have seen, this dog caught thousands of rabbits in its lifetime and all of them in daylight.

When i first read Garry's articles i thought he was full of crap, i got to know the guy through a mutual freind, and i have had some brilliant sport with the man and his dogs and we became good friends.

 

I think its a bit unfair to slag the man off when he is not here to stick up for himself, any silly cnt can do that.

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't he breed a litter of 3/4 greyhound 1/4 Bedlington's from Spud? I'm also sure that he went on to say that, although the pace which you mention was improved, he found them lacking in every other way.

 

I'm not knocking 3/4 breds per se but you often hear people saying the same i.e. they rave about a half bred, use it to produce a 3/4 bred in the hope that the added speed will improve it but find it's lost all the other qualities they loved so much in the original dog. As you say, "What it lacked in pace it made up for in brains and drive."

I had this dog about 28 to 30yrs ago, was out of spud and a whippet greyhound type off local dog track, the whippet grey was also a decent ferreting dog. The dog was 23" great nature, totally mute, draw back was hard mouthed but with great prey drive, not rapid fast but well fast enough. Just did rabbits, had the odd hare, never saw a fox but i thought it might have been ok if given the chance. Had to work loads in them days so he was never tested as he should have been. Would like it now though.

Your right Neal, but if you want a true alrounder then you need the extra pace a 3/4 gives you, brains and drive is all well and good but for some quarry you need excess pace, if brains and drive were the be all & end all we'd all be using Border collies, if someone goes for a 3/4 then there are sacrfices to make, but there are gains to be had too, comes down to what we hunt and the ground we hunt it on i suppose. atb, buster.

I was told it was granitor greyhound but who knows, certainly looked like a beddy greyhound.

There was more than grey/beddy in spud, a wee bit of border/lakey me thinks.

i stand corrected on this, but pretty sure spud had rillington blood in him,of which gary hosker was abig fan of at the time in the 80s,put back to a westmead greyhound bitch, met him afew times at shows,selling his sporting prints ,some which i still have,believe he exchanged some prints for spud as payment, i never ran anything out of spud,but run a good few with rillington blood in them in the 80s and 90s, superb little dogs for ferreting , lamping and catching the odd hare,great dogs and greater memorys.

I think it's because finally a lot of lads/lasses have finely pulled there heads out there asses and woke up An realised that they can't be assed to be dragged all over the country side by a great bull x or a specialist bred dogs they just need a master of none that's got the bollox to punch above its weight if needs be An get stuck in an get the job done the bedlington greyhound xs offer just that a neat tidy package that don't attract to much attention that are clever enough to preform a number of tasks day An night

Think.the majority of beddy crosses given the opportunity will work hard and catch plenty rabbits like most crosses of lurcher
