Nice one Keith .We just picked up a pig farm but the farmer as usual was exaggerating on numbers .We've had two lots of 20 and now the place is quiet .Chicken farm nearby so hopefully get that as well .Ratting very good for keeping dogs fit and alert .

Loathed by most, loved by a few,an unworthy opponent to some terrier men, yet a more than worthy opponent by others. Some like to kill the odd few now and then, others like myself hunt them on a weekly

Most of mine too.

foxbolter i'm not going to get pulled in to a debate over how strong a rat is or is not,ive bin working terriers for over 35 years and over twenty on other quarry, so i'll have my opinion and you have

I was reading about the settlers out in America that kept old English shepherds (collies)

an used them for pest control as they only had or could keep 1 dog

Pics of them coon hunting at night etc

often kick myself for not trying a collie instead of the labradoodle pup I bought 2 year ago.

Take the Wheaten terrier for example. It was a dog used for herding and vermin control and if the history books are correct it was a terrier also used to see who had the toughest dog in the locality because a bit of lighthearted dog fighting would take place among those in the local area. It was the same with most of the Irish breeds and only when breeding got refined did the cream rise to the top. Back in the hard old times it was easier to feed one all round dog than several specialists and a lot of those American settlers were Irish too.

This could be the most ridiculous question ever asked but I'm going to ask anyway ? I've got a Springer and a sprocker at home Springer bang on beating dog however sprocker likes to do his own thing so not much good in way of beating but I've kept him anyway. I've read statements on here that most dogs can become ratters if so could my sprocker do So? He loves digging up the field mice burrows and had a few of them just got me wondering about him really. I want to find him work that he likes as beating just dosnt suit him and I'm not one to beat it in to a dog. I'll await the abuse for a silly question ?

I had a Springer who was a demon on rats. She was an excellent gundog but the rats did make her a wee bit hard mouthed. My fault completely.

He's hard mouthed anyway so that shouldn't be a problem. Cheers lads I'll have a yap with a few farmers and see what he dose.

Have any of ye used a the springer for flushing and marking fox??

The lad I shoot with every Sunday has a Springer who's class at hunting a foxes line and marking him and will go in a couple of body lengths if possible. But she's mute. Fatman used to have Springer years ago who'd let a few yips out of her if there was a fox in a bog etc. and was never wrong.

I have a young dog here 11 months and is starting to rag fox. I'm going ta give him a shot and see how he goes after xmas. I'll work him with me auld  bitch along a few double ditches if any thing goes to ground or is below she ll get em. Hopefully I'll tune him into the red fellas. In time he may be a good asset and get a bit more digging threw this method.
